Rare Set vs Samples

  • Keep it as one rare set, chips are happy

  • Break it to multiple samples, people are happy

Sample Sets to me are used to indicate a future interest in a chip set. That's what I used them for when trying to decide on the quality and type I wanted for my first set.

What kind of chips do you like? How do they look together? Stuff like that.

So really, the best thing to do is keep the set together. Especially if it's rare, you may never get to play with that set again.

To be fair, most of the CCA members and dealers back in the day didn't even think about poker sets with real chips. From posts that i recall seeing on the chip board, most used dice chips (or similar). I bet even now, most don't have a real or high-end set.

Most of you set collectors should understand that for the longest time, there were/are 2 distinct/different markets and mindsets between the Singles and Set collectors. I have been in both from around 2003 and from my observations i think the reason there is not much cross over relates to how one person starts collecting and what they focus on as collectors. Just because set collectors see it one way, doesn't mean its the only way or the best way. That is too black and white and life is a bunch of grays too.

A lot of the old-time singles collectors (and dealer's for that matter) either started with coin or stamp collecting when they were younger and eventually gravitated to chips or they loved to play in casinos and started to pick up a chip or 2 at each casino they played at. Some loved the old history around Vegas or gambling in general and started not only collecting chips, but all sorts of stuff like dice, tokens, matchbooks, etc. The point is these guys collect because they love gambling in a casino and were attracted to collecting items for either each casino they have been to or the history of each casino. The focus has never been to collect a set of chips to play poker with.

As far as collecting, I was a set collector first then a singles collector. Here is how I became a Set collector. Loved to going to Vegas and played lots of poker online, Vegas/LA and at home. I joined and read a lot of stuff on 2+2 and THP (Texas Holdem Poker website) for poker. Eventually I wanted better cards and chips for my home games, so started reading the chips/equipment specific forums on those sites then joined CT when it was launched. I bought my first real set, Palmas Club from Spinetti before Ace Poker chips bought them out and flipped them. As I started looking for better poker chips, I would take notice of these chips when I went to Vegas and then started to bring home one or two from those trips. After awhile, i started buying on eBay chips i didn't think i would ever bring home, mostly $100 denoms first, then my interest grew into the history of these casinos/clubs. That is basically how i got into singles collecting.

The above commentary is directed to everyone in general.

As far as Travis' negative comments around dealers. Sure we have some unscrupulous dealers that would lie and say they only have 1 that rare chip and want a very high price for it vs if it is known that 100 of those chips are out, the price would drop a lot. I have encountered that scenario mostly on eBay. This is from the Singles mindset.

As for the chip dealers that would prefer not to tell quantities and charge singles prices for their chips, I don't think i have ever come across any CCA dealer that outright lied, however, i am sure there are a few, but i have never dealt with it. Usually, if you ask how many they have, most are usually forthcoming but its from a singles mentality, not a set collector's one. Though, you do need to ask first. Don't expect them to disclose without asking. Also, don't get pissed off if they don't want to sell to you all their inventory at set pricing $1 to $4 a chip instead of $10 or $20. Don't forget their mindset is still in Singles collecting. They probably think its fair selling a chip at $20 each vs what it was previously selling for at $100+ each before they found the chip. Again a Singles perspective. Also, you don't know what their cost basis is and its really up to them to sell them at whatever price they want or if they want to sell them at all. From a singles point of view rare means <15-20 pieces known of that chip. In Set collecting, rare could mean 100-1000 chips in total.. That is why its good to understand the differences.

Back to general comments....
There is a saying among us set collectors that chips are meant to be played with. What that does is it gives your chips a purpose, however, they are still inanimate objects. The chips don't feel shit. It is what we feel our chips are worth and why we collect them. I choose to collect both and as the owner, i get to choose on how to sell them. Just like in life, do what you think is right. You can ask for opinions, but in the end you decide.

Back to i think what was the point of the OP and this is my "opinion". If the chips are really that limited and are highly desired, i'd still rather to have the opportunity to have 1 of them. For example, because i loved watching WPT, I am glad for the opportunity to get this (I wouldn't mind a sample set of the Paulsons version either, which are very hard to get).

Look, if the set is large enough, then sure keep a set and sell samples. But if they are really limited, then I don't take it personally or an insult if the owner wants to keep it together or break it up. That being said, I do have more than a few sets (though, maybe not highly desirable) that maybe fairly limited in quantity and i am not sure what i will do if i decide to sell them. Now these aren't for sale, so don't sent me a PM, though i think we need pron in this post....

Now before some of you get riled up even more around breaking up a set for samples. I have to LOL because these are 1st world problems. I get that its hard to put them back together, but isn't the hunt part of the fun? If you can't see that, then

Sorry for the long post and that's all i have to say about that.
