What is your #1/top Pet Peeves at the Poker Table? Does this apply to Casinos or Homegames, or both?

I will start

Headphones in homegames.

Not protecting your cards and it applies to both.

Besides basic rules violations:

  • Making conversation when you should be making action.
  • Hollywood-ing for the TV cameras when there aren't any.
  • Sunglasses and hoodies. Seriously? This ain't the WPT.
  • Inadvertently damaging the equipment (chips, cards, felt)

Wasn't there a very similar thread about this on here recently?

Headphones in homegames

came here with only one in mind and this is it. i couldn't care less if a couple hoodies want to zone out at the casino, but when i show up to a home game and there's some dude in shades and headphones, i just want to keep trying to talk to him until he realizes this is not the casino.

honestly, apart from that, i'm pretty much of the mind that anything goes in a home game. if people want to space out and watch basketball, sweat each others' cards when one is out of the hand, slow roll, whatever.

i'm also pretty unrattleable at the casino table, but i will say the following get under my skin:

- dealers who try to be so sociable they are unable to keep control of the game (whether by negligence or by being insufficient disciplinarians);
- people who smell;
- people who lock up a seat and walk 75%+ (not exaggerating) of the hands;
- incompetent floor people.

Folding to jbutler's raise in a multi-way limit pot only to realize after the fact that he knew all along his hand was better than original bettor's but not as good as mine.

"Poker wizards" who HAVE to make it abundantly clear that they are obviously the best player at the table because they read a poker book that one time (I much prefer the hoodie and sunglasses; usually indicative of the same attitude, but less annoying at least.)

In the same vein, bad players who make bad plays and then berate my play - especially the ones who somehow think that calling preflop with garbage is somehow better than raising with it...

Sorry 'bout that [emoji50]

People who hold up the action.
People who whine when they're stuck.
People who whine when they're winning.
People who bring old tuna salads to games.
People who bring roasted chickens to games.
People who bring giant jugs of water to games.
People who carelessly look at their cards.

Hmmmm... GlAd I don't plAy with anyone like that.

People who angle shoot at home games and act like douches to other attendees (in an attempt to send them on tilt). It's a home game d-bag, play nice! :)

People who try to play their hands from outside the window because they just CANNOT wait one more second for a cigarette.

pot splashing - despite repeated requests to not do it
not knowing when it's your action
table talk while hand is in action

the game I host is pretty relaxed, but i'm a sticker about a few things...

People who indicate they are checking by smacking two poker chips together. I put a stop to that quickly at my game!

Overlong smoke breaks.

During cash games they can overlap - one smoker goes, another follows after, first smoker stays outside and has a second smoke, another smoker arrives... Rinse/Repeat/Chorus

This would bother me less if I was still a smoker!

I still play with a few people who constantly hold onto their cards so you can't tell if they are in or not. And get pissed when I tell them to leave their cahds on the frickin table!

wearing sunglasses in a limit Omaha hi/lo cash game (seriously, there were two buffoons doing it this past weekend at the Hard Rock Tampa)

Grumpy, miserable people making the game grumpy and miserable for the donators in the game

Old ladies who make a big stink about someone raising in the limit O8 game

Marked cards in a 3/6 limit game

Anyone who drops a "not yo cheese/natcho cheese" line

Too funny

The only one that really bothers me is the people trying to pickup a date at the poker table and they have no idea a poker game is going on at the same time. I have played in a couple of home games where it was more about trying to hook up then play poker. Obviously, I never went back

I dislike playing with sober people.

EDIT: Jbutler's are spot on regarding the casino games - I'd add this: People that berate the obvious fishy spots at the table for their poor play....particularly when the one doing the berating is a rock and hasn't played a hand in 3 hours. Great job scaring away the easy money. Also, people who whine every single hand about what they would've made if they call. Once in a while is fine, but when it's. every. single. hand....I just start raising with ATC to torture them.

In home and bar games, I've seen a number of laggish agro players push over other players' chip stacks (often in fun, but sometimes in frustration after busting out). <---- dislike this very much.

I should add splashing the pot to my list as well, since the people who are doing it, are often the people you're not 100% sure of...

Players who hide their cards.
Players who criticize other players' play. If the other player wants to be coached, he'll let you know, but do it away from the table.
Players who smell really bad or who douse themselves with scent.
Players who always take a smoke break on their blind and post in the HJ. Once in a while, fine, but not every. single. time.
Players who invoke IWTSTH.
Players who call "misdeal" at the slightest irregularity. Not all irregularities are grounds for calling a misdeal.

Not a fan of bad breath. Also tilts me when people preburn and deal the turn and river early. Last but not least dealers who peek at the river card before flipping it over to add to the drama.

That shouldn't happen at all Mike! I lost count of how many times I explained to some players here the reason for the burned card and that it should only be done right before each of the three streets are dealt... I think people just want to be different, idk... I also don't like when the dealer (self dealt games) throws the flop cards all over the place, and same with turn and river... So if you're not 100% focused on a hand you're not playing, there is no way to reconstruct the hand to analyze players actions... I mean, c'mon, is it that hard to do it right? :)

All of this, but particularly numbers two and three.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the 'hand on the shoulder' players.

Home game dealers who don't place the board cards left to right, or who place the flop on one line, and the turn and river on a line below.
