Hi PCF,

I am a huge fan of Paulson chips, and I have always wanted a personal set of them. However, I don't have the willpower to dish out $2+/chip for a used set.

This may not be a unique idea (or a good one), but what if I was able to purchase $1 chips from several casinos that share mostly the same design, and make a personal set out of them?

I went to Vegas a few years ago and brought home a bunch of chips from several casinos. See attached.

My thought process is I can easily have two denominations, white and blue. Several casinos have top and cane, so I'd probably stick to those. The problem is what do I do about a third denomination? There's 3 brown chips I can use, but not super big on that color.

I like this idea because it would allow me to potentially build a 3 denomination set of Paulson chips at $1/chip. I'm willing to bet I could get some casinos to give me brand new chips as well, which is another plus.

Thoughts? Am I crazy?

There are certainly sets that use chips from various casinos to represent a single denomination. As long as the base color is close enough it seems like it's an option. I personally never liked that approach. Could you go to a single casino and buy a whole bunch of ones at $1 each? And then go and do the same thing at a different casino which uses a completely different base color (blue or white), sure!

But there are also lots of chips on here but you can have for roughly a dollar each. Many of them are 25s that you can easily murder and turn into any denomination you want.

Great idea. And if you can't get to Vegas yourself, I can help out. Pm me if you have any questions on harvesting or the current Vegas Chip market.

This is a very good idea, and several PCF members have done this or something like it. Picking up chips in large quantities from casinos is called "harvesting"; you can search the forum to learn more about it, or use this google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=site:pokerchipforum.com+harvesting

Some casinos are easy to get chips from, others are harder or even nearly impossible.

There are a handful of PCF members who specialize in harvesting. They'll do the hard work of going to casinos and sweet-talking them out of their chips, then sell those chips to the membership at a modest markup to compensate for their time and effort.

If the idea of a playable set of chips that's made up of various different casino chips appeals to you, then by all means pursue it! It's not everyone's cup of tea but you don't need to please anyone but yourself. Casino chips are high-quality and getting them at $1 each (plus harvesting markup if you don't do it yourself) is certainly a bargain. One thing to note is that harvested chips will have varying conditions - some might be near-mint, some might be incredibly worn, and there's everything in between. Harvesters will usually collect large amounts, then sort through them trying to find the ones in the best condition. Sometimes that's pretty good, sometimes it's pretty awful. The ones that are too worn to be worth keeping or selling just go back to the casino cage for a full refund. :)

Yes, you can do this, and many have.

The biggest problem is that there aren't enough base colour variations among live $1 chips on a consistent mold that would look good together as a set. There's mixes on THC, RHC, and lots of house molds out there.

Do some research on chipguide.com to look for potential candidates for the denominations you need, and see if it's worth to make a deal with a harvester to try. Best of luck!

Awesome feedback, thanks everyone.

Really interesting to know there’s “harvesting” as a service, I may actually go that route but the initial goal is to do it myself next time I make a trip.

Should have led with this is a first time post for me, but it’s nice to get a welcoming response from y’all. I’ll be checking out the resources on the site.
