Round 1 (maybe 2 or 3 before this post)
I'm probably going to get this made as ceramics but I also been talking with ICON too so I am still undecided. I may try aligned edge spots with ceramics.

I'm open to all opinions and suggestions. Thx!

Overall, I'm a sucker for solids, so the last row just "works" for me. However, I can see the appeal for an edge spot there. I also don't quite "get" the graphic behind the denom, and it interferes with the clarity of the denom. Personally, I'd drop the graphic ("the spikes") behind the denom entirely.

As shown, I like the second and last rows the most, mostly because that graphic is least pronounced, making the denomination easier to read.

I liked these so I used that style :) I don't know what that graphic is either. :) Thought it looked cool. I just noticed that the T1k doesn't have it. Does look cleaner so I'll check them out without it.

I like the last row the best. Maybe washout the graphic behind the denominations a little more.

Dump the spikes. Make the PCF text just a tad bit smaller, so it competes less with the denomination.

Go with row #3 spots if ICON chips, no-spot solids if ceramic. But big preference here for last row ceramics with the two minor changes noted above.

The solids look better, but the design with edge spots are more functional to be able to more quickly count chips in stacks. Visually I have more trouble counting a stack of solid color chips.

I really like the chips after P5W changes based on the comments... I usually prefer spotted edges for what Jeff pointed out but for ceramics with a design kinda complex like this one I believe solids are a better option... They are looking GREAT!!!

agreed with Chaos above - solids look good for the face design rather than emulating the edgespots. though i would look to do something on the rolling edge.

EDIT: maybe a rolling edge with a similar design to the Newfound Poker League set:

are you going through a vendor or working directly with ICON? i tried to contact them multiple times about an order and they were very difficult to communicate with. i ended up trying to go through a couple of different vendors and neither of them could offer any option other than the equivalent of an 814 pattern and with all white "edgespots". i wasn't took keen on the restrictions, so i abandoned the project. let me know if your experience has been different.

i would be ecstatic if they actually opened up their design options to those available to casinos (i.e., full custom rolling edges and "spots"). every single other ceramic company (and ICONs are ceramics no matter what their marketing material says) offers basically unlimited design options, so i never understood ICON's restrictions.

^^^I agree with this 100%. Looking good guys.

Thank you for all the feedback.

Any real pics of dots on the rolling edge? I was thinking edge spots, not sure about dots. Sort of like the PCF/PGI chips minus the text. Just spots.

i prefer the dots, but i don't think edgespots similar to those on the PCF promo chips would look bad at all. these were also printed by PGI:

as an alternative to traditional "edgespot" looking designs on ceramics i like the idea of dots/dashes/squigglies like those below on the borgata chips ($5 - dashes, $25 - dots, $100 - squigglies):

I like BG's logic here and would go that route also. Sometimes a more refined look goes a long way ... good luck with the final design

I like the idea of the dots or dashes or squiggles or even denoms... I don't think that would be easy to accomplish though, because of the colors used on the design... I wouldn't be a huge fan of the edge spot colors of the same color on all the chips... And if you look at the design, the only color differentiation between them is the base color... You'd have to introduce a new color to every chip... It can be done but in cases it might look a little too much all over the place... In Jack's example all the spots had a corresponding color on the face and I think that makes a difference...

I agree with many of these thoughts on edge spots for ceramics - to me, ceramics are an opportunity to do something cool with the spots, especially if you're paying for aligned. (By the way, I love, love, love the Newfound Poker League edge spots when they're aligned. That green 25 on the right really does it for me.)

That said, I have a really visceral dislike of the edgespots in Tommy's opening pictures.

I can sum up why with a picture of two sample ceramics I have from PGI:

ceramicspots.jpg

The chip on the left evokes the cheap plastic chips people buy online. The chip on the right evokes Bud Jones and Matsui chips.

In fact, the chip on the right has edges that remind me of Borgata's snapper, a Bud Jones:

Here's your rolling edge, Tommy.

You're welcome.

I was thinking of a custom set in ceramics with the art modeled on various playing card companies... the low denoms would be things like Bee, Bicycle, Aviators, Hoyles... and the higher denoms would have KEM, Piatnik, Copag, Modiano... and while thinking about this thread, I had the idea of using tax stamps as the edge spots. The stamp would wrap around the edge of the chip, aligning to the art on the top and bottom face of the chip. I think that would be way cool.

For anyone who doesn't know, playing cards in the US used to be taxed (are they, still?) and each deck had the ends sealed with a tax stamp. I think the box ends are now just sealed with a manufacturer's sticker, but it used to be a tax stamp, and you can date old playing cards from the tax stamps. They make for some cool art: https://www.google.com/search?q=fed...a=X&ei=9GCtVNH9L-LIsQT5yoHICw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg

Those NPL chips are really nice. That NPL T100 is my favorite.

The edgespots could have the base color btw the 2 whites (light gray) so there would be no new colors added. Was that what you were thinking?

If I had the spots on the face, I would only get aligned. It would bother me if they weren't. :)

I think that could work without introducing new colors Tommy... I don't think there's a need to introduce anything else to the faces, that wasn't what I was implying... It was just that I couldn't think of a way of introducing the spots with the colors you have on the faces, but I think you just found a way :) P5W knowns a metric ton more about design than I do so I'm sure he'll come up with something awesome...

LOL @ Dave

One more idea I had is putting a repeating PCF behind the demon, but so light you can just see it. Like a faint 'security' type feature. Then put Poker were PCF was.

I'm just not a fan at all of a playable tournament set where each and every chip has a www. and/or a .com

Of course I understand where you're coming from... just doesn't do it for me

I agree. Otherwise nice chips.

Tommy,

What will the price per chip be if anyone was interested?
