Hi guys, I'm thinking of building a small set of PCAs. I really like the look of the primary 1s but from a bit of reading it seems like minty 1 primaries are hard to find. Do you guys think I should go for the secondaries instead?

My ideal set consists of primary 1, any 5, secondary 25, secondary 100, any 500. Any tips on how much I should be paying for them?

Thanks PCF!

Only a few racks of MINT primary $1s were made available. I like them a lot obviously:

PCA's are some of the best chips in existence, in my humble opinion of course. Leaded with shaped inlay. Great colors and spot selections. If I was in your shoes I would just go all secondary. There is nothing like playing with mint chips, the primaries are great but the 1s and 5s are just so damn worn.

That's the thing. I love the edge spots on the 1s and 5s primaries but the used ones basically look like bicycle tyres :(

Perhaps secondary is the way to go. Any tips on pricing?

I'd recommend going for secondary $1s if you are looking for near mint.. plus you'll have a full secondary set.
Personally, I slightly prefer the secondary $1s to the primary $1s. condition being equal.

Rough estimate Secondary Pricing (assuming near mint/mint condition):
$1s - ~$160 - $185 per rack (near mint/mint racks currently in the classifieds for $180)
$5s - ~$475 to $500+ per rack
$25s - ~$325 for a rack
$100s - ~$650 - $700+ for a rack
$500s - best deal on these I have seen in a while - $400 per barrel in classifieds now.. otherwise mid / upper $20s to mid $30s per chip

@softchewy pricing is pretty spot on. There have been a few ads that sold out in seconds with better prices but those are rare and his pricing is about the norm for what they go for especially if mint. IMO, the chips are worth it though. If you have a full PCA cash set you really don't need anything else. Some of the best chips money can buy. I have PCA 5's in a mixed set but it won't be long before I end up with a full PCA set myself. The chips are too nice to avoid.

Ho ma lawd. Looks like I'm going busto. Thank you for sharing :) Guess I'll save up after I sort out my small set of Jacks.

I think I'll have troubles avoiding them myself! Looking forward to see your complete set bud!

Here's the mixed set I currently have them in. Can't help but share pics because I love it so much lol! Make sure your post plenty of pics as you acquire them!

The $5 is the hardest to find and of course and costing face value sucks but they are awesome! All of the other denominations come up for sale pretty regularly. And if you offer to buy a whole set at once someone will sell. It seems to happen a few times each year and the wanted ad is usually closed not long after.

I’d avoid the primary $1 & $5 being in play together. They share too many similar colors that dirty stack will happen.

Good point. Not sure if I'll play with them though. I love em mint! :)

Be ready to buy when they come up for sale. They never last.

Guess I best sell my kidney tomorrow.

Buy the bike tires and embrace the wear.... Pfft, mint....

Honestly with how good they look, it's a STRONG MAYBE for me

Go worn, if you decide you wanna upgrade to mint later, you'll be in the same boat but with less risk but an easy sell for even money. If you end up adoring them, you spend the least amount of cash.

Starting, I'm all for checking you options and moving up. You'll grow into finding that perfect set. Chipping is a marathon, not a sprint...

Also home game used is nowhere near casino used. They are light years apart. If you want only truly unplayed dusty mint chips you are going to make your search that much harder and probably a little more expensive.

Tbh I'm okay as long as they stand on edge

Take MC Trollmaster Kifer's comments with a grain of salt. ;)
Used chips can be great. I prefer to play with chips that have some wear (good to excellent condition) vs mint... but bicycle tires are not as fun to play with.. depends if you shuffle chips, etc or not.

Hahaha... It was a serious comment. If I were him, dig into the CC, Mid plastics, and worn Paulson’s. Explore. I'd hate if someone told me to buy a 3k set and find out I adore the worn Paulson’s. Safer to try the more worn and expand into nicer then buy new and hope that's the peak. And the best part of being here is finding that new grail and grinding to get it.

But don't listen to me, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night.... :)

Pending on what you're going for secondaries run $3k-$4k for a playable set.. I would recommend secondary 5s as most of the primaries are worn quite a bit. Nonetheless they're all beautiful chips. You might also have more luck finding secondary 500s.

oh I know it was serious comment.. but judging by the OP's comment:

Bicycle tires aren't going to fit the bill as they only stand on edge while rolling ;)

Agreed, explore... as the old adage goes - Get samples
Get samples
did I mention, get samples?

He said that after my comments! If predicting the future is my super power, I'd gladly trade his chip goals for knowledge of my powers.....

Reverse psychology.
Is it really out-of-context if it's acknowledged by the author as such?

Anyway, my pride is finding the hidden gems, not quoting every reference to racks... And I certainly don't want to be spoon fed.

Yep, I love my worn out primary PCAs! Of course I've gotten them at dirt cheap prices too, so that helps. I've scored racks of primary $5s here and there for $75-85 each. Hard to beat that price for leaded Paulsons with lots of character.

One time I was doing some sound testing for a gold mine in the mountains near Durango, and an eBay auction was ending for some PCA $5s I was watching. Problem was I had no internet out there. So I drove 15 minutes to the little restaurant at the end of the road where I could get a signal, sat in the parking lot and sniped the auction right at the end, and drove back down the road to the mine. Success!
