I received an email from what looks like PayPal. I click on the link and it takes me to a website that looks like PayPal. I am very leery of any type of email that requests that I click on a link and sign in.

So I do a respond email and the address shows as [email protected]. I only hit re but did not send it. I just wanted to see the email if came from.

Not sure if anyone else has received something like this but I am doing nothing the email asks me to do. I logged in to my PayPal account on a separate browser and everything seems okay. I checked for any types of notices and it does not show any. I guess I will find out next time I buy or try to pay for something.

Anybody else see this before?

David

I get emails from PayPal all the time for special offers and whatnot and they almost always have a login link. The main thing to watch out for with links is using a number/letter to replace a similar number/letter that looks like it is OK at a quick glance. Especially the URL for the page it takes you to.

The [email protected] I have no clue on.

I never do what it says. I just wanted to see if anyone else has ever received this type of email. Basically it is asking me to go "answer" questions to unlock my account.
From those that have had your account locked, how did they inform you?

@RainmanTrail?

As a good rule of thumb, never use a link in an email to sign in to anything. Sign in by going to the website yourself by searching or typing it into the address bar.

Exactly what I do. I do not give info over the Internet or by phone.

I think PayPal has a link to report phishing scams if you are into stuff like that.

report to paypal, if the name doesnt end in @paypal.com its a scam

Although there are some authentication methods out there that could prevent this, it is generally trivial to spoof the apparent address of the sender, and you should not assume the authenticity of any email based upon the sender's apparent address. It may help identify an email as fraudulent, but it is not reliable to identify an email as legitimate.

I am quoting PayPal verbatim the exact message I received from PayPal to my account as well as a phone call I had with them

I wasn't disagreeing at all. I was only pointing out that just because the address says it's from PayPal, that is not sufficient to prove that it is in fact from them. I do think PayPal has arrangements with some email providers to provide authentication, but I'm not sure of the details. Best to verify through separate channels if in doubt!

I have seen this from a coworker. Scam, looks legit, but scam.

I have gotten this recently and went to Paypal site manually in a browser and looked at the help section. They described the situation I got like yours as scam, and gave an address to forward the scam email to them so they could review it.

Mine said if i didnt click on the link and log in immediately my account would be frozen. This on the same day I had just accepted a payment then issued a partial refund.

Never click a link, ever. Log into your main paypal account and go to messages. See if there is communication through there. I do the same through eBay.
