Poking around through the FAQ and some of the threads and see the frequent reference to THC and RHC - can someone explain to me the difference and how you would identify one vs the other.

Thanks.

Top 2 are THC, bottom one is RHC, or search works as well :)

To summarize, there are 3 main differences,

1) THC has a can handle on the right of all 8 hat-canes around the chip. On a RHC, 2 out of 8 have a cane handle on the left.

2) THC chips have a ring on the perimeter separated by a line.

3) The inlay size on THC is smaller than RHC.

These 3 differences are very condensed and they can each be discussed and dissected in great detail but I figure this is the best way to give you a summarized idea of how they are different.

The post right before mine serves as a good reference point to spot all the differences.

To expand, RHC hat/canes are shaped/sized differently than THC, and they are closer to the rolling edge (making the clay thinner there and more prone to breakage). THC hat/canes are protected from this by being further away from the edge and with a concentric circle in-between the hats and the edge. The THC mold also has a smaller diameter center recessed area.

THC = Top Hat & Cane
RHC = Reverse Hat & Cane (referring to the two debossed images that are reversed)

Inlay sizes can vary on both chip molds -- as small as 7/8" (Standard) up to Giant, which covers nearly the entire chip surface. See the PCF Reference section for examples of available inlay sizes.

All very interesting information - now that I know what I am looking at and having looked at some of the various chips I have picked up at different places I can se how the RHC is more 'fragile' where the Top Hat gets close to the edge of the chip. Probably less of an issue where the chips are being well cared for, but I have a couple of casino chips where that has been nicked away.

Thanks to all for the quick education here! :)

I like the paradise or pineapple mold. Are these hard to find and expensive? Expensive to me is anything over $1 per chip. Would like to get my hands on a sample set

The Paradise aka "pineapple" mold was only ever used for a single series of chips, the Le Paulson Noir fantasy set. They are probably not available for less than $5 a chip, although that's really just a guess (I haven't priced them recently). You can search the forum for "Noir" to learn more about these chips, but this thread is probably the best source of information.

Welcome to the forum!

The only Paulsons at or under $1/chip are probably going to be used RHC (barring a couple unique exceptions).

Just to complicate the matter further THC made by Paulson / GPI has 2 versions. SCV (short cane version) & LCV (long cane version).
There is also another version of THC that was made by Christy and Jones referred to as CJ and is not easily distinguished between LCV to the inexperienced eye.

More info can be found here.
http://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/molddesign_manmade.htm#md76 . Read about MD76, MD76a & MD77 to the different "THC" and MD76b for "RHC"

Also to note, outside of PCF, these chips, RHC, THC, IHC, etc are grouped and all referred to as Hat and Cane. It is generally abbreviated to H&C, followed by the specific mold type. e.g. H&C(RHC), H&C(SCV), H&C(LCV), H&C(CJ) H&C(IHC) or H&C(ORHC). ORHC is known as FHC (Fat Hat & Cane) on PCF.

This is helpful to know if you plan to use the chipguide search feature as you won't find THC as an option if trying to search by mold.
