As villain I play this as a lead on the flop or a check raise. I don’t like his line at all. There are really no bad turn cards for him. If the board pairs he makes the boat. If it doesn’t he blocks the nuts. Can Hero really call a pot sized flop bet and another on the turn?

what are you doing if villain pots river? Discounting nut flush?

If I were villain, I probably would have tried to check-raise flop leaving an all-in bet to lead with on the turn with any card

I probably fold.

HOWEVER, he only does have middle set. JJ could easily be out there in the 5 other hands that saw the flop. It's a tough play for sure, but would have worked.

Lead out as @Rhodeman77 mentioned above is probably the best play because it’s not top set. Then can make a strong play on turn/river if not raised
