Hi folks, just wanted to ask for some guidance on how to go about building/completing a cash set.
I'm pretty sure I'd want a breakdown of 100/200/200/80/20 (or something similar) in 25c/1/5/25/100. After lurking on this site, I have a few ideas in my head on going about this:

Option 1: Wait and buy a full set from someone selling on the classifieds.
Option 2: Wait and incrementally buy barrels/racks from people selling on the classifieds.
Option 3: Go for a mixed set and incrementally buy barrels/racks from the classifieds.

After browsing posts some sets that stick out to me are the Aurora Star cash and Flamingo chips but how difficult/how long would it take to eventually get a complete set of one of these and would option 1 or 2 be more reasonable? Or is option 3 with a mixed set the way to go? I guess fracs would be another issue with some of these sets?

Cheers

I would start with budget.

You want 500 chips. If your budget is 1.5k, then that’s 3 bucks a chip.

Having this in mind, work out what sets out there have an average chip price of under 3 bucks a chip.

Put out a wanted ad for the denoms you want, while being on the lookout for a full set going on sale (unlikely especially if you have a specific breakdown in mind)

Be fast on dibs when you see a rack of what you want come up.

If a full set comes up and the chip price is reasonable… dibs it and sell off unwanted denoms.

Happy hunting!

To answer your question a little more directly, it’ll usually be a mix of option 1 and 2.

I’m not a fan of mixed sets but have seen some pretty nice ones. But I’m ocd like that

Hi mate, I'm in the same boat. I picked up some Paulson Jacks from here:

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/jack-cincinnati-summer-sale-new-set-added.76695/

Prices are decent but only $5 and $25 left so will need to shop around to complete the set.

Happy hunting!
Yeah thanks! So many beautiful chips on here that make me not want to commit just yet haha

Great advice! Looks like I'll have to create a catalogue of desired sets in my free time.
Does dibs apply when there's enough interest that the seller decides to split the items if they're unable to sell to one buyer? Apologies, still new to this all.

What’s your budget?
I was fully prepared to get a set of CSQ Rounders off CPC in the future, but looking at how nice some of the sets on here are and the fact I'm in no rush, budget is definitely stretched higher. Maybe $4/chip after all is said and done, yikes

You also have the option to buy the premade set in that sale link above.

If anyone is looking for $1s there are some for sale here.

Option 1 is definitely achievable. You can also put out a WANTED ad. You may not find the perfect breakdown so you can always sell want you don't want.
Option 2 &3 are going to be difficult and expensive unless you have a reshipper as most chips will most likely be found in the US. International shipping adds up real quick.

I in the same shoes as you about 6 months ago, as international shipping is expensive it going to be hard to assemble a set from
different source if you don’t have a US reshipper

First thing I will do is get samples from Aus if not from US and get a feel what chip you prefer as it will be expensive to resell back the set if you don’t like as reshipping will be around usually about 20% of the chip set cost

2nd thing is setting on a Budget not everyone can afford to throw tens and tens of thousands of dollars on poker set and this also will limit or unlimited the scope of chip that you can buy on

3rd thing is something a lot of us do : overbuying or overbuilding a large set like 1200-2000 chip per chip limit yourself to 500-800 per set it going to be more than enough for a single table

I myself was a budget guy and I decided to keep my Budget to around $1 per chip it not easy but the current Jim Sales is a good start to buy as @The_Worm had pointed out, this is also where I bought my first clay set and for fracs I bought starburst Solid and use them as my flexible fracs for the set

I also build a ASM HHR cali colour solid set from different sources as I like the classic look while I was looking around for my first set

I have also handed on some B&G plastic and I am impressed about it as they felt nothing like what I imagined and so I also gotten a set from @Stas one of PCF vendor selling them at very affordable pricing with the recent 25% summer sale and free shipping (which is great for international member) if you hit the minimum amount of chip

Last and not the least I also gotten a NCC Cardmold set before my first set at the start as I had heard many good things from PCF about them for my Micro stakes poker

You going to be most likely ending up with more set than you will need, but this is also the joy of collecting and using different set for every session

Good Luck with your chipping journey, make more research and sampling

Beautiful sets! Thanks for the advice, definitely didn't consider that international shipping would add up to be quite costly, might limit me to buying larger amounts of chips at a time. I don't plan on collecting many sets at a time so can hopefully save my wallet here :)

That's a very decent budget indeed.

Within this budget these are the options I know off that you can probably get mostly mint:

- Horseshoe Southern Indiana (Secondaries / Primaries)

Notes: Probably have to make your own Fracs -->HSI Pron Thread. Probably meet your budget even if you were willing to spring 600usd for 1 rack of fracs.

- Jack Cincinnati (Secondaries / Primaries)

Notes: Probably have to make your own Fracs, and settle for non-mint 1s as mint 1s are hard to find and expensive, will probably come under $4 a chip when all is said and done

- Rounders CSQ from CPC

Notes: My own personal first set and I love it a lot! ---> Pics of my own set

Obviously I own all of these so a little biased but happy for others to add on as to what you can get for under $4 a chip these days. I'd be happy to know and would probably end up with another set!

Wow loving some of the colours of the HSI secondaries. Looks like there was a chip room sale about a year ago, are these likely to come up again?
Everyone has been super helpful, much appreciated!

HSI will come up again just not at TCR prices.

More TCR sales will happen again but we are at the mercy of a casino rebranding or closing down.
