I’m designing my own set of cash game chips (1, 5, 10, 25, 100). I like the idea of going against the typical color configurations like white/blue for $1, red for $5, green for $25, and black for $100. But I do still want a red and a blue chip somewhere in my designs.

For those of you who play a lot of home cash games, would it be annoying to have unique colors and also have a $100 be red and $25 be white for example?

It all depends on your players. Mine don't care as long as the denominations are clearly printed. For my DDLM set, I used some non standard colors:

If I only had one set and needed to choose I would go with standard colors, but with several sets I wouldn’t mind spicing it up on one of em. Get rid of that 10 though. You typically want 4-5x between each denom

Colors are standardized so a player can go to any casino in that region and not make unintentional bets due to a confusing color palette.

So to me, your home game set can do whatever it wants to do because you shouldn't have random people coming to play at your house. As others have said, as long as the denomination is clear on the chip, or you have the denomination chart clearly posted, you can go as wild as you want!

Just make the smallest or workhorse chip your favorite color, the next higher denom your next favorite color, and so forth.

Make yourself happy, and don't recruit any color-blind players to your home games. :cool

(If players spend so much time in casinos playing standard colored chips that the change upsets them,, you probably don't want them in your home games anyway...)

Having built a couple custom sets with non-standard colors, count me in the "do whatever you want" crew. They are your chips after all.

That said, also make sure you have clear denominations on your chips, especially if you go this route. If someone bets/uses the wrong chip, it's on them and not you as the designer. :ROFLMAO:

I'm in the "alternative colors" camp as well.

However, I recently played a cash game where the chip color closest to red continually was confused as the $5 chip when it was actually the .25¢ chip. Players hesitated and verbalized their confusion throughout the night, though it became easier to remember over time.

Big denominations printed on the face I think help mitigate confusion when using non-standard colors.

And, if you're planning on ceramics, I support non-standard colors even more! I'm a fan of the yellow $1 chip which allowed me to use white and blue as other chips in the set.

I would encourage you and others new to read the new members page in my signature, it talks about the different standards (Vegas and Cali)

The community talks about loving diversity, but there are some guidelines, you can choose to toss out all of them and go with a 'My game, my rules', but I will caution you, your game exists because others enjoy it.

Here are a few I've learned along the way.

You ought not have a white based or 1/2 white based chip other than a 1 or 100. It causes too much confusion
Personally I prefer a blue 1, however most recently I'm considering other colors, and black is a contender

Likewise I would say away from red for anything other than a 5 MAYBE a .25

other than that go ham!

What he said. I would also caution that the standards are standards for a reason, they work pretty well. That said you should knock yourself out, it's your money. Just make sure that the chips work together. Make sure the colors/hues are not easily confused *in the environment* you intend to play in.

You know, never in the history of the world has there been such a vocal minority as the “team black dollar” freaks. They represent less than half a percent of all PCF users, but they show up in every thread like this, in attempts to normalize their insanity.
It’s time we stopped acting like this behavior is okay. A black one dollar chip as an abomination and the sooner we’ve removed every last one from the face of the earth, the closer we’ll all be to the good.

Oh I have. They're very cool. Not for poker, but cool.
I'm not just talking trash. Not JUST. As I recall, those were like drink chips from a club or something. Or tip chips. But not poker chips.
