I’m helping plan a bachelor party for my buddy next year and we wanna try and do a poker tournament during the stay. We’ll have around 21 dudes and we’re hoping all but maybe a few will participate. My plan is to follow Chris Manzoni’s vids on YouTube for the setup but I also wanted to check in with this community for any other suggestions on how to go about doing this.

My one worry bead is that Chris M mentions his tournaments can take up to 6 hours. We’ll have a good amount of poker fans but not all of them will be and not really anyone who has played in regular organized tournaments. Will 6 hours be too much? If so, any suggestions on how to speed it up to maybe the 3-4 hour range?

Any other tips greatly appreciated!

Yeah if you’re using his perfect starting stack video as a guide and want the game to be faster, I’d suggest starting with 100/100 blind level and don’t use any 25s. This is shown at the very end of the video. You don’t need to use the bb ante but it’ll help to keep things moving. 20 guys x 20k chips with maybe a few rebuys….use his structure but shorten the levels to 15 min and your game should be done in less than 4 hours.

I guess maybe I missed that at the end, I’ll need to rewatch. Appreciate the help though, I may do that.

I was just wondering why the hell anyone was having a party for Johan Sebastian Bach. I guess if you really love classical music.

Then I opened the thread and realized it’s been a long day and I’m a dumbass. :wtf:

I thought O.P. meant beach party. I was expecting this:

The easiest way is to just reduce starting chips and reduce the level time, that will speed up tournament.

Now I have to chime in…I’ve had mixed experiences with poker tournaments at parties. It just usually doesn’t go great. I don’t know that I’d even consider a 3 table affair with mostly casual players.

That said the main things you should work out are
-activity after you eliminated
-someone to run the tourney and handle disputes, ideally someone not playing (and disputes will arise even as simple as hey eliminated player would have been blind, it’s of course dead blind but maybe not everyone realizes it)
-how you’re going to handle the clock
-be very firm and clear what rebuy policy is -I’d do no rebuys but your party dude

My recommendation is that this tournament ends before the strippers show up.

Also, if you are not sure how well it will go over then just do cash. Your players will play, your non-players won't, and it can start and end w/e with no blind structure needed.

Yeah I agree with this. People will be in and out as they please, get splashier, way better to watch/enjoy. The grinders who care can sit and stay forever but I advise mandated breaks to drink.

This was EXACTLY what I was thinking and I had already pulled out my powdered wig and baroque tailcoat.

P.S. it could also have been Johann Christian or Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach, too.

I mean there’s still a decent chance of this being present

I have considered it, but I just feel like a tournament is more of an “event” to participate in. Plus he wants to do beer Olympics so this could be a thing for that for people to score points. Idk I agree cash would be way easier

Run it like more of a turbo, something like 10k starting stacks with levels starting at 100/100, should be able to finish in 3 hr easy. Did this for a friend's "Girls' casino night" bday for all of her friends who weren't super into poker and they still finished around 3hr despite limp calling every hand all night haha.

I getcha. In my thoughts? Do lots of bomb pots, silly prop bets (win with a queen in your hand means you lose a shirt), dumb things like that. Tourney would just too much of a shit show. Maybe Im just projecting my drunk players onto your event.

Thanks, this was the kind of opinion I was looking for too, how well tournies do in actual practice. I can see exactly what you’re

no it’s a good point. People will be toasted. You guys have convinced me to lean towards the cash game route.

Good looks. It can still be a blast. Win with 7-2? Everyone pays you a dollar. Two Aces? Take a shot. Stand up game: win a hand you get to sit. Last guy up owes every other person at the table $5 (or $1, or whatever).

Screw the beer Olympics. Play "Drunken Poker".

Drunken Poker is simple. Everyone starts out with 100. Standard 1/2 NL table. When someone busts, the bank will gladly give them another 100, and all they have to do is a double of THE NASTIEST THING YOU CAN FIND AT THE LIQUOR STORE THAT DAY! And when I say nasty, I mean $8.95 with a $10 mail in rebate nasty.

I also found Drunken Poker to be a good way to let newer players learn the game. Instead of them being afraid to lose money, they are laughing at their buddy having to drink that swill.

I would never consider running a tournament for 20 guys unless I knew exactly what I was doing. I mean if you think it’s something he really wants to do, then what the hell, what’s the worst that could happen?
I love poker tournaments and it seems like a terrible idea for a bachelor party, even if you knew what you were doing. But it sounds like you don’t.

I typed that before and forgot to hit submit.

Now I’ve read what you’ve written since and it sounds like an even worse idea to me. There are so many different fun things you guys could do for a beer olympics than dividing up into 3 tables and playing cards separately for 3-4 hours.

It’s not strictly for the beer Olympics, enough people like poker including the groom that we’d play regardless, I just thought a tournament would be a good way to award points. No biggie though, people in here have definitely convinced me to go towards a cash game

10k stacks (no re-buys), start blinds at 100/200, and double the blinds every 20 minutes. Every pot winner has to do a shot. Losers at showdown do two shots.

Will finish in record time and folks will have a blast. Have somebody sober keep records; nobody playing will remember who won.
