This is one of those sports that really gets me. Like why is this a thing? It has some long British history. Okay, cool, so what? They actually go really fast. Like at a cadence that elite 800m runners, but with a non optimal method of moving. So like, should we have a event for what adult can crawl the fastest?

I have some of the same gripes about some of the swimming events. Why different strokes. Why not just who can go 400m the fastest? Whatever.

here is the biggest problem, it de ligitimizes the rest of the events. It gets held up as this joke and it is barely defendable. Everyone just rolls their eyes and moves on.

I see your point, and I'm no fan of this sport, but that argument could be used to delegitimize all martial arts (and boxing, wrestling as well) except MMA. Personally I like the different variations. Unless it's only walking!

I think you hit the nail on the head here. You don’t see that on the track. There’s no 100 meter hop, or 200 meter skip. The breast stroke is as dumb as this speed-walking and I have no idea why they’re Olympic sports.

The butterfly stroke originated when people started "cheating" at the breast stroke.

I can imagine speed walking started with some rich twat with a brandy walked up to some other rich twat with some gin and said "My good chap, let's see who can *walk* the fastest" and it went from there.
