Hi there, registered for this site because I have an old set of poker chips from the family (my great grandfather) I wanted to know a bit more about them. They are pre WW2, but I can’t really use them for obvious reasons. Anyone have any info on these?

Hello and welcome!

Yes, you've got what we refer to as "paranoid" chips. Nothing to do with the psychology term (or Nazis, for that matter), but refer to the material composition which is a celluloid-type material. Those symbols are die cut and then pressed into the base chip material.

If you look back into the marketing of these chips, lots of them were produced with religious symbols figuring prominently, such as the Maltese Cross, crescent moon and star, Star of David, swastika, etc. You will find all sorts of symbols were used, and sometimes even just simple letters as well.

Thanks so much for the info!!! I literally just look at these when I am moving and wonder what to do with them. Guess who’s moving next week lol.
