we had a hand tonight where the SB went all in pre-flop. It was the first time I have played with him and based on how tight he was playing I KNEW he had to have a strong hand so I folded AJ suited (clubs) with four active players. I don't know the exact math on this and I know it is a strong pre-flop hand and I may have called heads up but I folded. To show the strength of my conviction I folded my cards face up.

Good news is he had pocket queens and the following five cards beat JJ and AJ unsuited, one of whom called all in, so I made a lucky decision to fold as I would have lost had I called all in.

My question is if folding face up is a violation of any rules? Or just a jerk move? Or an OK move?

Thx

As long as there is no action after you've folded then I don't see anything wrong with it

In my game it is a violation as well as being a jerk move unless the hand is dead on your fold. Even if all other players are all in before you show ... it may change if they want to do any business of running it more than once now that they know those 2 cards cannot come on the board.

I would never do it at a casino and in a home game just put them folded to the side and show after the hand if you want.

hmmm

not going to give an opinion. dont worry you will get alot of opinions.

The more important question is What rule have you broken? The answer is none of them - Because you don't have any.

If you did have rules you wouldn't be asking this question.

So my suggestion is get rules - learn them! once more LEARN THEM. so you can answer this yourself.

Now theres 2 ways you can go but it has to be consistent no matter what. for god sake never do an exception.

But if it were my rules that are printed and on the wall (but never read LOL) a hand folded face up is live. Until there's action you don't follow. so its live until you don't call.

there is another rule you can use that is whenever your cards touch the muck they are mucked. face up or not.

get rules - Use them.

I'd say it's pretty standard to make a "hero fold" face up as long as you are closing the action for the entire hand (e.g. nobody else has the option to act on the present street or future streets).

Happens all the time in live poker.

If there are other players still left in the hand to act, that are not all in, then it's absolutely not OK. Especially if there are players who haven't called the SB all-in yet -- you are affecting their action. (You should clarify what is meant by "with four active players.")

If you were the last player to act, and all remaining players are all in (i.e no more betting action in the hand, or on later streets), then it's OK. Otherwise, no.

Although some tournaments will rule that intentionally exposing your hand results in a penalty, regardless of circumstances. Always know the house rules.

You said this was preflop, so the answer is simple. Unless everybody else at the table had either folded or gone all-in (not simply called the guy who went all in) then exposing your cards was wrong.

As said already, it's definitely against etiquette if there's any action to come behind you (either in this or future streets).

But unless you're consciously doing it to present a particular image, why do it all? You're giving someone free information in an information game.

Reading this post was kinda like scanning the National Enquirer headlines while waiting in the supermarket checkout line...

No question about it, this is bad unless your fold ends the hand.
House rules or not, never intentionaly expose cards with people still left to act, this will always incite a negative reaction from the other players at the table.
If your fold ends the hand, no one will be upset about you showing your cards before you muck.
I would actually like to see your cards before you muck so that I have more information on you and what you are willing to fold.

I answered this just assuming that we are closing ALL action and my fold ends the hand... if it doesn't... we'll holy shit yes that's a dick move.
