It is time to vote for the 2021 PCF Custom Chip Set Hall of Fame!

If you read nothing else, please read these two points!!!
  • When voting please MAKE ALL YOUR SELECTIONS AT ONE TIME!!!! Once you hit “Submit”, you will NOT be able to go back and edit them!!!
  • You may vote for as many or as few sets as you like. This year’s committee has recommended that three sets be enshrined in the HOF.
Hall of Fame (HOF) Purpose
The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to recognize significant achievements in the creation of custom poker chip sets. This recognition comes from the votes of the PCF site membership, in collaboration with the work of a selection committee that solicits feedback from the membership and nominates sets for a formal vote. The committee is comprised of current PCF members, and the committee’s nominations do not necessarily equate to choosing the most popular sets. There is no quantitative way to assess the merits of a poker chip set; therefore, it is up to each committee member’s qualitative judgement on whether a set should be nominated for public voting. As poker chip sets are a very personal creation, in no way should a lack of nomination be viewed as any criticism on the quality of a member’s custom set. The entire HOF process is solely intended to celebrate and augment the enjoyment of our hobby.

The HOF Committee Membership
The committee is comprised of a chairperson, and a group of members. The chairperson’s role is to facilitate the HOF nomination process, and the committee’s role is to determine those sets that merit consideration for a full site vote. There was no formal membership selection process for the current committee members, it simply self-manifested. When a current committee member wishes to step down, they can select their replacement. If a replacement is not selected, the current committee members will debate and offer a seat to a replacement member in the first quarter of the year. It is the intent that the members rotate every couple of years, to harvest the best ideas from a diverse group of people. Current HOF committee:
HOF Nomination and Selection Process
Custom sets made by current PCF members are eligible for consideration in the HOF. There is a one year “cooling-off” period from the date a set is revealed before a set is eligible for HOF consideration, intended to prevent short-term hype from influencing the process. Custom sets are eligible for nomination for a period of four years. The 2021 nominee class includes sets revealed from January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2019. Once a set has exceeded the eligibility period, it is no longer up for consideration. However, the HOF committee may nominate one “expired” set per year for legacy consideration (i.e., to correct a previous oversight). The general process is as follows:
  • The HOF committee will solicit ideas from the site membership for HOF consideration in the first half of the year, including legacy sets.
  • Using the opinions of the membership and their own personal beliefs, each committee member provides an independently created list of sets to the chairperson. Note that PCF moderators and admin have no prior knowledge or input regarding nominations.
  • The sets are compiled by the chairperson, and the committee privately debates the merits of those sets. Eventually, sets that merit formal nomination are determined by an internal voting process. Members of the committee may recommend and vote for the nomination of their own sets; however, members of the committee are strongly discouraged from promoting their own sets (i.e., other committee members should do all the talking). The chairperson is responsible to discourage all forms of self-promotion.
  • Once formal nominations are completed, notification is provided to the set owners. The creator of a set must formally agree to inclusion of their set in the HOF process, and a draft write-up of the set with pictures is requested to facilitate the voting process.
  • After owner consent and information are obtained for all sets, the final list is subject to a public membership vote where the top sets will be inducted into the HOF. Voting is open for 2 weeks to established members - 30 days with a minimum of 30 posts. The number of sets for induction will be determined by the committee, based on the quality of that year’s nominations. This year’s committee has recommended that three sets be enshrined in the HOF. The quantity of PCF votes for each set is public; however, the ballots are secret.

Without further ado, here are this year's HOF Nominees........

Thoughts from the owner:
Before an army goes to battle, they normally take a visit to the armory first to gear up and prepare for what's ahead. So it is with The Armory set of chips - the intent was to create a lower stakes cash set so that friends with less experience, less bankroll, or less game could still play comfortably and enjoy themselves without fear of losing a car payment (or worse). Furthermore, games played at The Armory were intended to be played "helpfully", meaning that after a game or a session had wrapped the players would gladly revisit a hand & discuss choices made, optimal/alternate lines of play, etc., so that we might all get better along the way. With that in mind, the Ferrum Ferro Acuitur phrase was inscribed at the bottom. For our non-Latin speaking friends out there (read as: "everyone"), that roughly translates to, "As iron sharpens iron" - a reference to Proverbs 27:17 which is completed with "so one man sharpens another." With that in mind the crossed swords were added behind the color-matched shield, effectively rounding out the inlay.

From an overall design perspective this set was largely formed out of parts that, in isolation, I would normally find very disquieting. I have always leaned toward symmetry, logic, geometry, and the like vs abstraction so it's particularly ironic that the set found its beginnings with the $1. The first time I saw the Mapes $1 my mind was blown. It's the first time I recall seeing a yellow $1, particularly from Nevada, the first time I recall seeing spots that didn't protrude very deeply into the chip, and the first time I recall seeing four different-colored single spots like that on a chip. It hurt my engineer's brain, but in a good way.

If the $1 was a sea of chaos, then I needed to be anchored by something. That something became two things - consistent 1/4 inch spots, and spot progression. That quickly settled the spot pattern for 5c through the $20 (which made more sense to me than a $25 in that I can get $20 bills out of the ATM but not $25's). I love contrasting base colors so a blue quarter made great sense, and then having an orange base on the nickel worked as well. Progression would indicate that we go from simple to complex so the spots on the fracs had to be a single color. I wanted my wife to have some input on the set since she'd be using the chips some. Her contribution was settling on the exact shade of orange on the nickel, as well as choosing the spot color - she's a Suns fan, so the purple wasn't a surprise.

The larger denoms were a bit more challenging. The $1 is already wonky in that it has five different colors of clay, and getting progressively more complex than that might have resulted in a tie dye chip for the $20. Furthermore, I needed the color combinations of the five to both be distinctly different enough from the $1 to avoid dirty stacks while at the same time being pleasing to my eye. I'm generally not a fan of yellow spots on red chips and I had concerns about using two of the colors from the $1 on the five, but the final result is what you see. The orange on the five helps it to stand out enough from the yellow/red on the $1, and the other three spots offer sufficient difference to avoid dirty stacks. The $20 was a community collaboration. The black NCV was intended to be flexible enough to use as a $100, rebuy chip, or whatever the situation called for. The cross symbol was a nod to the tourney set that came before it and is itself a riff on St. George's cross frequently seen on shields and, of course, the English flag. The spots on the NCV were intended to be a callback to the crossed swords in the logo. And finally we have the snapper. This is a chip that was never intended to be in play, but was just added in the name of gratuitous fan service to my love of snappers. Since it wasn't to be used with the set I ultimately didn't constrain myself to the 1/4" spots at all and I knew I wanted DG green paired with it. Ultimately this is where we landed.

Thoughts from the owner:
Being a life long Alaskan I wanted a set based on an Alaskan theme, I had mentioned a few ideas including the Aurora Club to Steve (Quick Silver 75) and He came up with all the design work. When picking colors I wanted them to be what I considered to be traditional. At the time I didn't know about Vegas or Cali colors, these were just what I was used to at our home games. The spot progression was inspired from all the input I received from the community.

Order placed with CPC in November 2015

Thoughts from the Owner:

Ever since dipping my toe into the chipping hobby nearly 15 years ago, I've wanted to build a big ASM/CPC tourney set around a Jack Daniels / bourbon theme. But, nailing down a specific theme that I really loved proved to be elusive. In 2018, my father & I made the trip to Lynchburg Tennessee to visit the Jack Daniels distillery. The distillery has dozens of barrel houses on site, and I found them to be really neat buildings - very rustic and almost dingy, but with an interesting, down to earth character that I felt perfectly matched the vibe I was trying to recreate in my upcoming basement poker room renovation. The trip solidified my desire to go with a barrel house theme for the set, and thus "The Barrel House" was born. During trip, I had snapped a photo of a barrel house sketch that's on display in their visitor center; I sent that over to @Johnny5 along with some inlay design ideas to incorporate the logo of a whiskey related social club I belong to, and he worked his magic the rest of the way.

For chip colors, I wanted to keep to the standard green/black/purple tourney lineup and go from there. I have two personal pet peeves when it comes to my chips: I gravitate to chips that pop with vivid contrasting colors between the base color and spots, and prefer utilizing spot patterns that allow the base color to take precedence and define the chip. I had one chip in particular that's been more or less set in stone since CPC introduced DG Katy Perry - that was my T100, and it's still my favorite chips in the lineup. I built the rest of the set around that chip, drawing color & spot inspirations from several of my favorite sets, including Casino Newfoundland, Ambassador Plaza and Lakeshore Inn. I included both a T20k and T25k chip in the lineup, which I always get questions on. The simple answer is that I couldn't make up my mind which denomination and chip design I liked better, so I just got both! The latest edition to the set came in a year or so after the main set - a 44mm scroll mold bounty chip that was definitely worth the 17ish month wait :)

I actually designed this set as two sets - primaries and secondaries. I thought it would be neat to have two different sets, each playable for a two table tournament, but similar enough that they could be combined into one big set in the event that I ever got my act together and ran a larger 3-4 table tournament, like a PCF meet up. I had the pleasure to finally put this idea to the test this past summer at Jammin' in Jersey's inaugural main event, and it worked out even better than I could have expected!

Thoughts from the Owner:
This set has historical and patriotic overtones based on Philadelphia, where I was born and raised. The Liberty Bell serves as the centerpiece of the inlay. My grandfather and father worked for the construction company that built the old Independence Visitor Center and bell tower for the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. It was intended for the Liberty Bell to be housed in this tower, although that never came to be. The set features weathered inlays to give an antique feel with text using fonts from that period.

  • 300 x 25c - Imperial Blue 3D18 DG Arc Yellow / White

Thoughts from the owner:
This was my very first clay chip set for cash games. I didn't want to put personal information on it like my name or my city, but still make it personally significant to me through its theme.

The Matrix movies really have struck me like no other movie did so far. Working professionally in software development, I know very well what nowadays' technology can be and is already being abused for, and I am terrified by the various pushes of governments and even society itself all around the world since years in this regard that all lead to one thing: total transparency and surveillance of, and hence control over, the people. A psychopath's pipedream. Ultra-mainstream people might consider me a conspiracy nut. You might start to see now why the Matrix has made such a big impact on me; if you don't, consider yourself lucky and just take the blue pill: Ignorance is bliss.

I never liked super obvious merchandise that prominently sports the respective well-known logo and through that is clearly recognizable as such by anyone. I am more of a subtle type here and prefer things like e.g. my "Black Mesa Research Facility" coffee mug that is a reference to Half-Life, but pretty much only people who actually know the game would realize. Hence the Matrix signature "digital rain" is nowhere to be found on my chips.

While there is no actual poker play to be found in the Matrix movies, I found a very good spot where one could imagine such games to take place every now and then: In the back rooms of the underground venue owned by the Merovingian program - Club Hel.

Inlay artwork features the medieval cross ornament seen all over this club. The edge spot designs and clay colors might not be particularly flashy, but every single denominated chip in the set has a theme reference. I invite you to check out my original design thread about the set for detailed descriptions. The most notable of the non-denominated designs I made alongside is a blue pill/red pill chip featuring four central short quotes, or rather concepts, from the movies: Cause and Effect / Choice is an Illusion -- Ignorance is Bliss / Desert of the Real.

Design and artwork were all done by myself over the course of about half a year in 2017. First chips arrived at my door in February 2018; the add-on that bumped the number of $1s and $5s and added the snapper (of which I had only ever revealed the proof so far) arrived in January 2019. Another add-on with a new $25 and revised $100 was ordered in October 2020 and just got delivered beginning of December 2021.

Set Denominations & Breakdown:
  • 5¢ - 200 - Butterscotch 314 Chocolate
  • 25¢ - 400 - Blue 3DSA18 DG Green, DG Peacock
  • $1 - 1000 - Gray 4DSA18 Charcoal, Black

Cutthroats
Owner: @Steamtrain
Artist: J5
Manufacturer: CPC

Showcase thread: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/the-cutthroats.41241/

Thoughts from the Owner:

My love, passion, addiction for fishing was the inspiration for the Cutthroats set which is designed for playing tournaments with family and friends. Cutthroat trout are found in western North America and the different subspecies have great ‘western‘ sounding names. The chips are named accordingly: T5 Colorado River, T25 Yellowstone, T100 Snake River, T500 Rio Grande, T1,000 Westslope, T5,000 Greenback

I’ve caught all the different cutties in the set except for the Rio Grande Cutthroat; Rio Grande sounds good to me so it got on an inlay.

The set naturally gravitated towards western styling with the small crown mold, font, and mountain background on the inlay. The artwork was done by J5 @Johnny5, I sent him a simple sketch showing just the fish, denomination and cutthroat’s name, as well as a few pics of some geometric, multi-colored fish art located in Bethel, VT and the resulting inlay from him was superb. I believe his inlay is why I’m writing this.

001.jpeg

002.jpeg

The cutthroat trout gets it’s name from it’s distinctive orange slash markings on the lower jaw.

003.jpeg

The middle edge spot (Dayglo Tiger, Dayglo Peach) on CPC’s 3TA316 (my favorite edge spot pattern) represent these orange slash markings on each of the chips. I initially tried to have all middle edge spots all one orange color, either Dayglo Tiger or Dayglo Peach. However, the only way it worked for me was by using both oranges, so I ended up alternating the two colors over the six denominations. For example, the Dayglo Arc Yellow edge spot on the T100 works best with Dayglo Tiger, while the Dayglo Pink on the T500 works better with the Dayglo Peach. For the T5,000 (spotted bird inspired) I went with the Dayglo Peach to go with the very light edge spots of Dayglo Yellow and White.

Two issues needed resolving in the original set of chips. The purchase of 300 more chips expensively resolved both. The first issue was the dirty stacks of the Maroon T100 and the Blurple T500, as both are the equivalent of Black in low light. The Blurple was changed to Lavender on the T500 and J5 lightened up the inlay background to match the Lavender. The second issue was far worse. I had produced, in my eyes, an ugly T1,000 chip for my set. The Dayglo Green edge spot really brought out the green in the Butterscotch color, not what I was wanting. The original T1,000 was just too ugly to be called Westslope since I’ve caught more Westslope than any other cutthroat. So I got back on the chip design tool, swapped in Canary and Mandarin Red and J5 reworked the fish colors and now I have a 1000 chip I’m extremely happy with.

I love fishing for cutthroat trout and greatly enjoy playing tournaments with friends and family with my Cutthroats set (although I haven’t won with them yet).

Thoughts from the owner:

I started my game out of the corpse of another game – that host had moved to the suburbs of the suburbs of Houston and a regular game that had run for over a decade quickly died. Not knowing if the game would become a staple, I didn’t want to spend too much on chips to start (went with Tiki Kings), but once it was clear the game was going to stick I started pondering a chip upgrade.

Kids definitely change your perspective on things, and mine had already started learning poker as well – I wanted a set that would have some meaning and could also be passed down. We had recently done one of those genetic testing kits and so I got the idea to do a set based on the countries of origin of the family and wanted to represent the flags in the chips and edge spots to show that.

Trouble is you quickly learn almost all flags use the colors red, white, and blue VERY regularly, and so I got some design help from the community to figure out what countries to put on what denominations and edge spot design. Also, wanted an inlay that would give off both a classy and old world vibe – after a few iterations with @p5woody we came up with the old map look, and the flag shown on the outline of the country borders. Set turned out wonderful and sees tons of use in both my regular games and in games with the family as well.

.25 chip – Ireland (the Irish flag on the edge spot – my wife’s dad’s side)
$1 chip – Sweden (the whole chip is an approximation of the flag – my dad’s side)
$5 chip – Cuba (the edge spots represent the “flow” of the stripes of the flag – my wife’s mom’s side)
$25 chip – Italy (the Italian flag is on the edge spot – my mom’s side)
$100 chip – United Kingdom (the union jack stripes are represented on the full chip by the edge spots – my mom’s side)
$500 chip – Spain (similar to Cuba, the edge spots represent the “flow” of the stripes on the flag – my wife’s mom’s side)

The goal of the Rising Sun chip set was to pay homage to the vintage Flamingo chips of the 1940's and 1950's. The solid lavender 50c Flamingo chip drew me in. Everything in the artwork from chips of this era appears hand drawn. The graphic is essentially black on a white surface, with a third color added. Often the alignment of that third color isn't quite perfect. The alignment of the white ring around the black inlay is never perfect. These are all elements I strove for. The salmon color on the Rising Sun set is intentionally misaligned differently on different denominations. The denominations are different fonts and stretched to appear hand drawn and generally squeezed into place... very similar to the Flamingos.

For a couple of years, I toyed with ideas to make a Flamingo commemorative set. Nothing seemed good enough and due to copyright issues a true Flamingo commemorative set was off the table. Always a fan of classic rock, one day I heard The Animals song "The House of the Rising Sun" and thought... there's a theme I can work with. I envisioned a post Depression underground club; perhaps an opium den. Of course there was gambling. Flashier chips than most illegal establishments of the era, but generally appropriate for the time. The diamond square mold and generally simple edges pots fit right in.

Thoughts from the Owner:

The Ritz-Carltons, with their picturesque nature scenes on the inlays, have always been among my most treasured chips. That was the basis for my wish to design my own custom set of nature themed chips. I decided to use the four seasons for my own design, which would allow for four very different nature images on the inlays. I also wanted to give a nod to the Ritz-Carlton as a luxury hotel - and "Vier Jahreszeiten" ("Four Seasons" in German) is the name used for upscale hotels in Germany. I decided to go with a "Club & Lounge" subtitle in order not to invoke trademark issues with any hotels.

I found four photographs that I really loved showing different seasons, and then continued to choose the base and edge spot colors to match the colors of the inlay pictures. You will find all the colors of the chips and edge spots repeated in the inlay pictures in some form. I worked with BCC on the color matching, as they knew what I intended to do, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Since the chips are intended as tourneys, they don't show any currency value, just the denomination.

As a fifth denomination, I decided to get plaques. I love the hefty feel of plaques, the design options, and have always adored plaques with lunettes (pearl window), like the Sahara plaques. In Europe, only Abbiati offered what I was looking for on the consumer market. They sent me a huge sample set, and I experimented with various colors and styles before finally placing the order. As a funny side note, it seemed unthinkable to Abbiati that a private person would order such a number of expensive plaques, and sent me offers in the mail and invitations to event for some years afterwards, assuming I run a casino.

Voted. Thanks for posting these Matt! Ben and I happened upon a Club Hel snapper, it is one of my favorite card cappers. Glad to finally know whom it originated from!

I voted for 3 sets. Good luck everybody, each set is deserving in their own way. I would have liked to have seen a few more sets included for voting as well.

My favorite time of the PCF year! Love getting to see and celebrate all the wonderful sets made by the community. Thanks to the committee for taking the time to keep this tradition going!

I am generally pretty stingy with my votes for the HOF. Many great sets here. At one point I had as many as 5 in, but ended up voting only for 2.

Congrats to all!
