I’m a very new member here having just joined PCF several weeks ago, even though I have been an occasional “lurker” over the past few years. I typically don’t enjoy or participate in Forums or Social Media because I don’t like a lot of the negativity, flaming attacks, and trolls that seem to congregate there. Not so with PCF! I find PCF a very welcoming and civil place to hang out, and I’ve been enjoying it immensely. And as many of you already know, it is an addictive place.

My recent observations of poker chip prices are what inspired me to write this post. I bought my first “nice” set of poker chips in the late 1980’s. Then in about 2008 I purchased a 1500 chip set of spotted Paulsons. I think Paulsons were around $1.10 or $1.30 back then. I’ve always appreciated the beauty, buttery feel, and sound of nice clay chips.

Today’s prices are blowing my mind! Today I saw a post from a member that hasn’t been on the forum for six months and was shocked at how much prices had risen in this short period. I would like to know what the experienced collectors here think about today’s prices and the state of the hobby.

I understand the basic economic principles of maximizing profit, supply and demand, market price equilibrium, etc. However, I wonder about today’s super high prices? I know the marketplace will work all of this out over time.

A few questions come to mind when beautiful and coveted chips are selling for $7.50 to $17.50 per chip, or more; $4500. to $12,000. a set, or more. I think there have been a couple of sets offered for $27,000. in the past few weeks.

How many collectors here are actively going to be adding sets to their collections at these prices? 25, 100, 1000? Are the high end sets just going to be traded back and forth between the same very small number of collectors? Are people willing to felt a $15,000. set of chips, or are they just going to sit in a cabinet providing “joy of ownership”? Are people buying chips as an investment only hoping for higher returns (not just justifying their purchase calling it an "investment")?

My post is meant to start a conversation about the current state of the hobby. I know I will probably start building an awesome set at these high prices, but I'm curious what the PCF community is thinking. Please let me know your thoughts.

The thc stuff is going at a largest premium these days and I suspect it’s for a few reasons - casinos are much more often choosing rhc molds and very few of the casino sets made available in recent memory have been thc (and the few off denoms that are thc like the jack 1 and jack snapper are priced through the roof). Secondly, Paulson doesn’t do shaped inlays or leaded chips any more and they’re becoming more and more scarce.
Here’s an old thread about pricing:

Seems like 10-15 years ago was kind of a low point for prices. If you compared it from the 80s through today after adjusting for inflation It would seem less crazy.

If ya ain't playing with the chips, why the heck to ya own them. They deserve to be felted. Every set I own is available for play, no matter the cost.

Jim @TheChipRoom is still selling some great used JACK Cincy $5’s for like 50¢ a chip.

You can still get a great set of Paulson chips for an excellent price or you can be a worthless degen sack of sh*t like me and offer $2,000 a rack to which you will hear nothing but the sound of crickets and your own self-respect running out the door.

Anyway, offering $2,500 for a rack of BTP $5 if anybody has one.

I’ll admit to having paid some pretty darn ridiculous prices for some of the chips I own. That said, you can be damn sure that every set I own gets felted, no matter their acquisition cost.

You can buy an awesome set of new - full custom - compression mold chips a lot cheaper than that.

If you can wait a few months (and are ready to forget Paulson yellow colors :) ), CPC is a great option.

Even CPC yellows can offer joy to mankind, if propperly combined with other colors.

I bet this time we’ll finally hash out the phenomenon of chip inflation and differences of opinion about the causes and effects. I for one look forward to the calm, thoughtful, empathetic discussion. At the end we can all laugh and sell each other chips below market value.

Welcome!

Wtf. Apparently I haven't been doing my job around here well enough......
Well, I guess there are a few exceptions. :ROFLMAO::ROFL: :ROFLMAO::ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

Thanks, but I'm not looking for an inexpensive set. I'm just commenting on the recent large price run up.

You know how to get a nice set of Paulson's cheap? .......... live house mold chips and Gear Labels

BOOM!

You're welcome! :)

Oh, I'm the life of the party here!

And plenty of ways to get an amazing set for alot less then what you are seeing prices at. It's all about goals in your chipping journey!

I'm glad they are getting some play time. It would be a shame to have them just sitting in a cabinet!

In all seriousness, I had the same weird feeling when the value of my chips was worth more than my dream watch. Couldn’t believe I really had the ability to sell all my chips and buy that watch.

Then I thought about what I would be doing with that watch right now: not a damn thing. Something tells me Rolex Watch Forum probably isn’t as fun, buy I’m too poor to ever find out.

When I got into this community, I wasn’t just looking for poker chips, I was looking for friendship. This is the only group I’ve ever been part of where I could find a bunch of like-minded individuals who all cared about the same stuff I did.

There’s a lot of laughs, great stories, really cool pictures and the perfect dose of trolling to round it all out. A lot of these chips may be overvalued but you can’t put a price on friendship.

Thank you, I totally agree with you! The friendship and community feeling is very evident. I watched the thread from the Angelfire meetup and it looked awesome. I've become immersed in the beautiful sets, chip history, and even the old casino history since I found PCF. I find myself lol more than I have in a long time reading through some of the threads here!

I'm a newbie still, I'd say. I've bought and sold my fair share of chips. This hobby has changed a ton in my short tenure so far.

I've felted all of the Paulson chips I could, in the beginning, when I was hosting and acquiring chips back in 2019. I have made conscious efforts to use them all. Some slipped through my hands unfelted....mehhhhh so what really..

I can't agree with some senior member sentiments pertaining to why one owns chips or why not use them etc etc. I don't need to answer those silly questions, since they make no sense to be asked in the first place.

When I joined here, I was already trying to host poker with dice chips so the chips didn't change anything. They only changed my perception of how hosting should be. I have gone and bought stuff I probably won't use, ya. Why do I need to use them to justify their purchase? I find this funny and it makes me laugh when someone posts this. I collect hockey cards too, and I've got 30,000 of them sitting in boxes. What's their purpose? Should I start flinging em around the room because I bought them. I'll do whatever makes me happy. Chips on display make me happy, whether they get used or not is of no consequence.

Chips are meant to be.... whatever the hell the beholder wants them to be. One can frame them for an entire lifetime, or use them as they please and make tires out of them. There is no HOYLE book on how to own poker chips.

Somewhere over the last year or so, prices have become so obsecne, it's getting hard to buy. I've had to sell nice stuff, to acquire other nice stuff. Not sure how long that will keep me interested. I'm feeling pushed out these days. Out of money and out of the energy to work extra to keep up with this racket. Worn out for sure...

Would love to see some pr0n of your present collection
