this is riduculous use of taxpayer money.

So many other areas to allocate resources to improve the country.

Christian Protestant jihadism:(
Same here of course, with Orthodox jihadism. If you want to play perfectly legal poker in public (i.e. in a licensed casino), the minimum stakes available are 1/2 Euros.
99% of normal, law-abiding citizens (including lawyers, doctors and government people) just can't afford these stakes here and will resort to quasi-legal (if legal at all) card rooms, at the potential risk of being treated like criminals, at the whims of the Police and the casino owners.

Here in NY home games are legal as long as their is no rake or no one is making any kind of profit. The advice is to not even take a collection for pizza.

In the USA different states can have very different laws. The USA is more like the European Union than even the UK.

Pretty silly as these games really don't encourage real crime. The only real danger is they can attract theives or if the cops bust it you'll never get back your cash.

$15 max rake being cheap is insane!!!

The guy in the article thinking he can be a pro at $1/2 or $2/5 with a rake that high is not very smart or realistic.

Same here, with the clarification that there's no police force needed to prohibit the host from collecting money for food - that would be among the most socially indecent things to do here.
The problem remains that, in homes, people are generally interested in getting drunk and splashing pots at nano-stakes, in ultra high variance games.
If a decent person is interested in playing a decent / competitive .50/.50 or .50/1 standard poker game, he has to go underground and potentially accept anybody (including real criminals) as fellow players.:(
