Hello Poker Chip Forum,

I have started buying some chips to use for a mid stakes cash set. However, I don't care if the chips are from different sets.

So far my bastard set consists of 20x $500 and 40x $1k Big Top Poker oversized bought from Sheikh.

I now need normal denominations and was wondering what people would go for? What set would you make up if doing a best of Paulson?

I probably need 60 x $1s - white or blue
200x $5s - red
200x $25s - green
100x $100 - black

The chips will be in play so the only condition is they are standard colours and easy to differentiate.

I think you'll need to define your game for us a little bit better before we can make detailed recommendations.

How many people for your cash game at once? Typical initial buy in? How much money on the table at the end of the night on the biggest night after all reloads? And finally, what's your total budget?

Once we have these answers, we can figure out a good breakdown, total bank, and average price per chip for maximum efficiency.

I’ve sent off an email to the chip room to see what I can get from them, but yours look good.
I will let you know once I’ve heard back.

Normally 1/2/5 PLO 4/5/6 cards.

No set budget, but the chips will be used so don’t need mint condition rarities.

There is a big difference between chips that are casino used and home game used.

Many chips that are home game used look like new still with very little wear on them.

Mixing chips that are casino used vs home game used (or new) can cause issues with stack height being off. Generally I would recommend trying to find chips that are about the same condition across all denominations as much as possible.

That is pretty much the exact size game @Hornet hosts.

recommend a breakdown of the following per table:

$1–100
$5–400
$25–200
$100-100
$500-20

Thanks. I’m going to go for less $5 and more bigger chips though because all the money goes in a lot in PLO and there are often split pots, so loads of small chips slows the game down too much.

Yes, that’s a very good breakdown. I generally prefer a few more ones on the table for change/tips/etc. so I like having 200 $1s.

I should have mentioned that the dealer keeps a small float in the game. Anyway I appreciate the advice you guys are giving.

If you want the best of Paulson, then I don't think RHC chips is the way to go. Don't get me wrong, plenty of RHCs that rock, but leaded THCs are just better.

I am a complete noob and had to look up the difference between THC and RHC.

Im glad I did and I’m still happy with my big top poker chips as they are oversized and the colours I’m after, but for the 39mms I will try and get THCs.

Ah, yes, sometimes I forget that people on here may not be familiar with the different terms that are used. I sure as hell wasn't until very recently, so I apologize for throwing a bunch of acronyms at you. But I'm glad that you did look them up and find a good comparison. There's certainly a whole bunch of threads on here dedicated to the comparison.

The THC mold is considered to be the superior mold. This is both for feel, looks, and durability. With that said the RHC mold still has plenty of beautiful chips under its belt. however I don't believe you will find leaded RHC chips. Only THC chips come in the leaded variety, and even then they don't make them anymore, so you're looking at ones that were produced a while back. So that's why when I saw that you mentioned you wanted the best of Paulson, I only thought of THC.

You've got BTP chips? Wow, that's a grail set to some people. And 43mm oversized inverted H&C mold (IHC) to boot! some would say that you already have some of Paulson's best chips... But yes unless you're going for a full 43 mm set, then the lower denominations can certainly be 39 mm and you can find some amazing chips on the THC mold.

This is my current mixed cash set.

I don’t like the Aurora star $1s so I will swap them out for Paris $1s.

I have struggled to find $25 THCs in any kind of quantity, except for Empress Stars which I also don’t like. I am trying to get $25 PCA secondaries but I have only managed to source one rack so far. In the interim I am using RHCs from the Chip Room.

I bought these ‘05 CDIs, but I am planning to swap them out for Empress Star $100s.

If I could ask a noob question myself: what does this mean? What's a "float" in this context, and why does the dealer keep one?

A stash of money that can be used for transactions in and out, making change, etc. Requires reconciliation at the end of the night. Think of it like the cashier's till.

The dealer keeps a tray of chips which can be used for different purposes. It could be to buy chips from the dealer, to make change on the table, to collect small amounts of rake so only big chips are dropped etc. It is a common practice in Europe, but I have noticed in America it only happens on table games.
