I have an old set of Paulson Pharaohs (not the china clay kind) from over 10 years ago. I am getting back into poker chips and looking to pick up a new set or two. I got some samples and have some questions:

1) Do all china clays smell so bad? Does it fade with time?
2) 43mm is awesome, is it possible to buy a set of all clay 43mm?
3) Does anyone reliably sell casino chips that aren't used besides CPC (my samples are on the way)?

Thanks!

Most western find the smell very strong, some people don’t really smell it.

I think it like durian, some people just find it smelly some don’t
2) 43mm is awesome, is it possible to buy a set of all clay 43mm?
Yes, but they also priced awesomely expensively as well

The most commonly recently 43mm you can find are RPC, try searching RPC for more info

3) Does anyone reliably sell casino chips that aren't used besides CPC (my samples are on the way)?
Yes, TheChipRoom sales sold mint casino chip but the timing is not fixed, usually it happens once every few months and they are sold out very quickly

Alternatively you can buy them from the secondary market at (usually) mark up price

I sold a big set of Pharaohs a few years ago to fund some hunt camp options. I can honestly say if the Pharaohs were your acceptable standard you will be disappointed with most China Clay's. I tried and settled with some used HSI primaries. The thing that always came up in games where I played the Pharaohs were questions if they were real casino chips....I'd have to explain well yes kinda but also no...the HSI answer is yes and players seem to like that. The Pharaoh colors were fancier but the real casino appeal seems to be there for folks including myself. Aside from real casino chips that aren't worn to heck CPC customs are another great quality option. Also custom ceramics give a similar yet slightly lower quality option that should still be acceptable.

I bought and sold China Clay's and stock ceramic chips that just were not up to snuff compared to the old pharaohs....thought I'd add my 2 cents hopefully save you a few bucks buying another set just for the sake of it that you may not appreciate.

New rule: No durian at the poker table. I need to get one of them signs... :ROFLMAO:

Okay thanks for the responses.

Here's my current plan. Sell my 600 piece set of Pharaohs and get some mint casino chips.

I'm starting to fall in love with the Emerald Star chips, and it seems there's some that are in great condition that come up regularly. One thing I'm confused by, people reference relabeling. What is the history with these chips? Searching got me too many threads.

Long story short: Paulson only sells to casinos. Some members have had success in ”pretending” to be a casino in order to be able to get Paulson to produce chips for their ”casino”. The Empress set is one example. There are other such sets. Sunset beach is another.

It’s a bit of a controversy around here, I guess you could say.

Got it. I guess that turns some people off because they want real chips that were used in a casino. But I think it’s even cooler to be able to tell my poker buddies how they were made. But then again, I am happy with my Pharaohs which were never in a casino either.

1) Yes they smell bad and from what I have heard it doesn't really fade. It's part of the CC charm.
2) Go custom. You can get 44mm from CPC and it will be around 1/4 the cost as trying to get a Paulson 43mm set and your final product will be on par with what is out there in quantity. The Royal Princess Casino or RPC or as I like to call the The Atomic Farting Dancer chips go for $20 each for some reason. :vomit:
3) TheChipRoom has sales from time to time and often have mint chips. But be warned, there are scores of people here who have to have them because they are the next shiny thing so the competition is stiff. On the plus side to that though is those people have to sell the last shiny thing to get the new one, so just keep your eyes on the classifieds.

Welcome back! Your timing couldnt' have been worse. LOL! (Seriously though, on both sentiments)

Not quite.

People were mad that they weren’t included in the “super secret group buy that wasn’t a group buy” and then had to pay high prices to acquire any of them

I get wanting new chips, hey we're all here aren't we, but Paulson Pharoahs are great chips.
Yeah my main problem is I have a $5, $25, $100, $500, $1000 set that I used to play 5c/25c with. But we now play $.25/$.50 and the OCD in me want the denoms to match.

Customs sound like the way to go. Are there members designs out there that I can use since I don’t have design sense? I know I just like pretty, saturated colors.

There was a recent sweet cards mold group buy recently...perhaps you could search out some designs you like and contact the group buy organizer to see about using the artwork. They are much cheaper than any other option of decent quality around lately.

What you have is a great tournament set and now you need to buy a great cash set
Point taken. What is your recommendation for someone who enjoys Paulsons but wants the chips in mint/new condition?

Money. A lot of money. Or to be fair the Paris chips are pretty accessible/affordable right now if what you’re looking for is mostly $1s.

Waiting for the next chip room sale and hoping for new chips would likely be your most affordable option. Otherwise as above $$$. Slightly used chips aren't bad at all....very used bike tires have height discrepancies between denomination's and even among themselves I'd avoid those if you enjoy counting chips by comparing stacks.

Wait till your CPC samples come in and see how you feel. To be clear they are not Paulsons but they are real clay. I would hazard a guess that there are great many people here who are fans of Paulson but also have CPC sets. I would include myself amongst that number. They are expensive, take a while to get, but they are fully customizable and very old-school which adds a nice texture to your game. Plus they are still made so you can still get them.

Personally I don’t care much about actual casino provenance for my chips (I have a casino set but I really don’t care much about its history). The exceptions would be for a truly legendary casino or one with interesting history and you can find plenty of stories about those around here. For me the love of Paulson chips in particular comes down to look and feel/texture. Other chips have different looks and textures.

As others have mentioned you can wait for a sale from one of the vendors or check out the classifieds but that can really take a while and sometimes it’s frustrating to be able to get the correct number of chips for the set that you are putting together. Also those chips just are hard to get. You have to be prepared for that kind of patience, competition, and frustration if you go that route.

Save a some money on the price and get a cash set of CPC. They are not Paulsons, they do not feel like Paulsons But they are very nice and they are real clay. From what I'm understanding, they're actually more durable.

The plus side is you can get your chips exactly the way you want them. The edge spots you want the The inlay. And it will have personal meaning to you.

The price is also generally a lot cheaper than used or especially mint condition Paulsons.

The only downside to it is depending on what mold you pick. You might have to wait up to a year to get them delivered.

If you get rid of the pharoahs I guarantee you'll regret it.

Keep it as a tournament set, get yourself a cheaper ceramic cash set, wait for the next chiproom sale and get your cash set then.

Thanks that’s pretty much my thoughts too. Getting some Tiki Kings and going to save up for a nice minty casino Paulson cash set.

I did buy 200pc rounders CPC as a heads up set to also tide me over.

The addiction is growing…
