Hi all. From what I can tell, Nexgen Pros are not prone to spinners, are dimensionally consistent, and have smooth, squared edges like Paulsons. Does anyone know if someone offers Nexgen Pro customization? I'm trying to put together what should be a budget pro-like set.

only way you will get that is through an alibaba distributer. I saw one with nexgen pros and when I asked I think it was .31/chip customized. At that price ceramics are cheaper

Thanks. Will check out alibaba. Can you recommend sub-31 cent ceramics with the flatness and edge squareness of Paulsons?

You won't find ceramics with that sharp an edge, they just aren't made that way China Clays either.

At 9g injection-molded slick plastic with cheap stickers, Nexgen chips are all about 'budget' and have nothing in common with 'pro-like'.

Like most things, high-end quality costs money to manufacture -- and you won't find it in a cheaply-made plastic poker chip that sells for less than a quarter.

Get samples before you get too far down this road. May not stop you from purchasing cheap chips, but at least you'll know what to expect when they arrive.

I appreciate all the helpful replies.

Based on reviews, these are the four benefits of the NexGen Pro chip that matter to me:
- no spinners
- edge squareness: much closer to Paulsons than cheaper China clays or costlier ceramics
- 9 grams
- optimal price: given the above features, better value for money than China clays, ceramics, or Paulsons

The only thing holding me off these NexGen Pro here is their $ sign and font, which is why I want to go with custom inserts or even inserts from other chips with clean designs, like the Showdowns:
https://www.thepokerstore.com/collections/nexgen-pro-classic-10-gram-poker-chips
https://www.pokerchipmania.com/clay-poker-chips/13-5g-showdown/

Does anyone have experience contrary to the four benefits I've gathered above for the NexGen Pros?

I don't think the NexGen Pro chips are necessarily bad. What makes them bad is the fact that they are sold out everywhere (Even the link you use to show them to us shows 9 different chips and 4 of them are sold out) and nobody is making more AFAIK. The ones they do still have sell at .30 a chip. Add .30 a chip for custom labels (.15 per label, 2 labels per chip) and that cost is now .60 a chip. I got my semi-custom Valentinos for .60 a chip.

Whoever told you ceramics is NOT a good value for your money lied to you. They are super easy to clean. They can take more punishment than any clay chip, either china clay or Paulson, can take. For home games, ceramics will easily outlive their owners. The customization that can be done with ceramics is LIMITLESS. Ceramics are a good value for the money.

If you LOVE those nexgen pros, then by all means go for it. Just realize at the price of customizing them, you are easily in ceramics territory now. You will be spending money on something that you can never get replacements for should you ever need to, while the same money can be spent on something just as good (if not better) and can be easily replaced at any time.

His problem with ceramics seems to be they do not have sharp edges

Sharp edges do not a poker chip make.

Excessive slippery-ness can render an otherwise decent chip simply horrible to play with.

I would not consider a slippery 9g plastic chip (sharp edges or not) as being a better value for money than ceramics, china clays, or even cheaper slugged plastics.

I agree with both of you. I suggested ceramics earlier in the thread

I don’t really agree with any of this. There’s nothing wrong with nexgens, if you like them then go for it! But I don’t think that anybody (on this forum) is going to suggest to you that custom labeled nexgens are a good choice for your budget, simply because they have square edges compared to the other cheap plastic chips.

just take a moment to hear what everyone is saying... nexgens are a great choice if you must buy plastic chips. But think the minute you talk about custom labels it shoots your budget up to ceramics, or even used real clay chips (asm or other vintage molds) and you can have something epic, completely custom you are going to REMAIN proud of them, let’s break it down.

-no spinners- at this price point, you could afford a couple spinners if it brought you up into real casino chip territory. Just buy 5-10% more than you need if you are worried about spinners.

-edge sharpness- it’s almost a non issue for paulson users... either the chips are brand new, or they are used, sure we factor that into the prices we pay, and maybe choose what we want, as far as ceramics, people here can help you 100% order great ceramics, with examples of exactly the “squareness” of the ceramic blank you choose. It’s not going to be an issue.

-9 grams- we kinda laugh about “official casino weight” paulsons vary, clays vary, chips just vary. good chips vary based on composition. Seems like people applaud the nexgens for “not being slugged” that’s great, the only reason they do, is because every chipper can feel a slagged chip on contact. Most of us would blush in the presence of a 12g paulson.

-better value for the money- I just don’t agree, I think all of the options you listed, China clay, ceramic and paulson are all better values for the money. I like China clays, I don’t own any anymore, but as far as a first set and workhorse chips, China clays rock. Ceramics are professional, customizable and bulletproof. Paulsons... well... Jim just a few weeks ago, Jim was selling awesome casino used paulsons for about 60-70 cents.

I’m not against the nexgens, at all, if you said, “I don’t really care man, I just need some poker chips and I want something cooler than dice chips, I got about 250 dollars, and need 1000 chips... what should I get?” -NEXGENS...

But the minute you start dissecting reviews and leaving a list of considerations, nah man, you care too much about the quality, you are one of us, we all started that way. Look at us now.

WELCOME to Hell :)

Great point about just buying extra China clays to deal with spinners. I guess I'm going to have to decide how much that Paulson-smooth cylindrical stack matters, undertanding that eventually the crisp edges would slowly diminish. Now both China clays and ceramics are making more sense. Thanks for making Hell more welcome.

After sorting through the various aspects and trade-offs and others' feedback, I pulled the trigger on the Dunes Commemorative chips instead of customizing.

The chips are crisp, square-shouldered NexGens. Their fun nostalgic inlays, progressions, impressed Dunes logos giving texture, nice weight, great stack flatness, and good slip friction checked off my wish list of features over 95%, including the cost constraint of 35 to 45 cents a chip. The colors pop well for my tastes, so oiling won't be needed. Color differentiation from their sides is also very easy, so they won't be hard to size up from the distance when mashed together in a pot.

The photo (before full unwrapping) doesn't show the 100 x quarters I have yet to receive to round out the set to a total of 600 chips. Anyone else disproportionately weighing Paulson-like edge squareness on a budget like I do, will appreciate a barrel's satisfying Paulson-smooth feel and, as the photo shows, ability to stand on edge like them.

Overall, they have a premium appearance and feel well below a premium or custom chip price.

This is my first chip set and I'm very happy with it.

I agree customizing NexGens puts them out of the running for value. I went with stock Commemorative Dunes NexGens.

Nice Valentinos, BTW, and your distribution of denominations is helpful for a newbie like me.

No spinners
Edges and stackability is even better than Milanos. ( i prefer nexgen because they don't topple like the china clays)
the weight is perfect
price is good

I agree with you on the inlay, complete unconstrasty garbage (imo) the chip edge spots aren't that great either.
Some others have posted alternatives on the same material. I considered nexgen relabel, they are easy to peal off with a pry tool (2 seconds per side).

But with the label, time etc... I decided to go for ceramic... but before I could do that The March 21 Card room Sale came up. Think I gotta go empty the wallet. however nexgen + time+ label might be more expensive than the .89 used paulsons coming up from "thechiproom". He even still has some ones for 60 cents available from his black friday sale.
