Hey guys,

I've been playing poker basically since I've been 18 and am now recently just seeing how deep the worm hole is on poker chips. Never really paid attention to who manufactures them, what size they are, what material, etc. I was just find myself saying "I love these chips" or "I hate these chips" when I'm sitting at a table. That's about as far as I thought about them.

I'm now in the market to purchase my own chip set and I really don't know where to begin. From everything I've read, I need to get samples. Where should I start this journey of getting samples? What brands should I start with? I'm looking for a set in the $200 to $400 range to begin with.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ps. I'm hosting a game in 3 weeks and HOPEFULLY i can decide on a set and get them here in time.

Welcome!!!
First things first: what games do you play - cash games, tournaments or both? Probably NL Hold’em/PLO, right? How many players would you like your set to cover? This will give us an idea on the max cost/chip…

Thanks man. Definitely tournaments. Usually one table with rebuys. So probably max 18 to 20 buy ins on a night.

You’ll need around 500 chips to cover that. Given your budget, we’re talking between 40 and 80 cents/chip. There are a lot of options in that ballpark. Maybe the China clays from Apache or Ceramics from BRPro would be a good starting point.

Play around with the selection tool and the calculator (both in the resource section) to figure out your ideal breakdown. Some folks here will certainly be able to help you on that.

I'd go with T20,000 on a T100 base chip.

Starting stack of 20.000 on 100-100 starting blonds.

Starting stack :
T100 x 10
T500 x 6
T1000 x 11
T5000 x 1

You'll need 1 x T1000 and 1 x T5000 per player to color-up the T100 and T500.

You can issue the rebuys as 4 x T5000.

So you can go with :
T100 x 100
T500 x 60
T1000 x 120
T5000 x 60

--> 340 chips

If everyone or almost everyone rebuys, you might need to color-up T1000 with T25.000 (8 are enough).

NB: this breakdown is also suitable for deepstack freezeout. Just add the rebuy chips to the starting stacks. ;-)

Can do with 400 chips actually.
T25 base T10k 120/120/50/60/30 will even give you a few extra rebuys.

Thanks for the help guys. This helps a ton. As far as Bud Jones s2 chips go, are there many tournament sets around? The only ones I've really seen are the WSOP ones from 2005. When I used to play at my casino back home, these are the chips they used for cash games and it would almost be nostalgic to get a set for home tournaments.

@jrubb42
I created this design for the SunFly hybrids oversized chips :

I could open it for forum members as I'm not sure myself if I'll produce it.

I would look at ceramics from BRPro or china clays from Apache!

Consider ceramic chips too. They have dropped in popularity recently and some great deals can be found.

I think someone is selling a small cash set of Bud Jones S2s (Big Easy). The Chip Exchange may have some S2 and V7 combos that could make a T5 base tourney set, but not sure of stock.

Another rookie question, sorry if this is dumb. How easy is it to customize the s2's? Will a sticker sit nicely over the inlay or does that need to be removed somehow? Is that even possible?

It should be easy to customize. There might be enough recess to overlay a thin unlaminated sticker on top of the original label. Otherwise, it's fairly simple to peel off the original label and replace the whole thing.

Thank you. Is there a particular product chippers use to get the residue off from the sticker without harming the chip?

I doubt you'll harm the chip as it is a very durable plastic. You could probably use a Goo-Gone type of product if you're really obsessed about getting rid of residual epoxy, but it's not necessary if you place the new sticker on soon after. You'll never notice the minimal residue underneath.

Dude thank you for this. I'll most likely be pulling the trigger on these. Did not see this!
people seem to miss this vendor - i actually really like the HS cincinatti lineup too but i'm not diminishing tcr or anything, Jim has a very great service going for us.
