Hi. I have an old but excellent set of cash game chips but over time the stakes have evolved so the denominations don’t work well anymore. The chips are out of production (BCC Modern Clay) so I’m thinking of building a whole new set. Given I haven’t been “in the market” since 15 years ago, does someone have a list of the most reputable and authentic websites to buy from? Also, are the sets from defunct casinos generally a good approach? Seems highly authentic and one issue is I don’t play often enough to really “break in” the chips (my 15 year old set still is frustratingly new-feeling). Really basic questions for this group, I realize, but perhaps you can help this newbie out!

Here is my 2c....
1st thing is to tell us how much you are willing to spend ($/chip) and then it will make it easier to make recommendations.

If you are looking for something that is of the same quality as BCC Modern clay, there are options at different price points:
$1ish/chip - Used Paulsons from a closed Casino/ Card Room - you are going to have to be very patient and either wait for another big buy from TCR or build through the classifieds. It'll be tough, but it can be done.
$2ish/chip - Mint Paulsons - same idea, just going with unused & usually a secondary set of chips.
$3+/chip Other Paulsons or 1 time buys or
$3+/chip True Custom set of compression mold chips from CPC - Classic Poker Chips

2c is worth way more than twice 1c

Thanks for the quick replies. Truthfully I’m not overly price sensitive. More looking for the right thing.

After some reflection I guess what I REALLY want is just to add to the Modern Clay set that I have, in particular $1 and $5 chips, very lightly used (or mint) so they don’t look out of place in my current set. So I guess the strategy for that is to monitor the classifieds and eBay...any other places to look???

I’m happy to spent $2k or more for a new set but honestly I really like the chips I have. I just need more $5’s and in particular $1’s.

Any Vendor here, or any member with at least a few positive feedback ratings, I would consider reputable. Tough to find playable sets from others in the big wide world our there. Have some ready cash to snatch a set you want at a price you can afford.

Samples are your friend.

The best source, hands down, will be the Classifieds - when you are eligible.

Welcome, I would first try a wanted ad when you can. If you don't have much success there your options for casino used sets are not overly limited. We've been lucky enough to have vendors here provide us with closed casino chips (generally cash denominations) for purchase through the forum

Agreed. Thinking this may be a long journey!!!!
Up until about 2 months ago, I was in the exact same boat as you. I had a small set of BCC Modern Clay that were no longer viable for the stakes that I wanted to be able to play. I loved the chips and really didn't want to just sell the set off. For about 5 years I would do random google searches for these chips and found this forum through the search. I spent quite a bit of time using the search function on the forum to see if I could find threads where these chips were mentioned. I was able to narrow it down to a number of members who had these chips. I reached out to one of them and was able to add enough chips to my set to make it playable. I am still a little lighter on the $5 chips than I would like but at least I can actually use my set for a single table 1/2 NLHE game. From what I have seen, these chips are out there and can probably be had but you are probably going to have to spend some time on here tracking them down.

Good luck with your search!

Yep, pretty much the same issue...light on nickles, 1/2 and 1/3 need them for sure. But after spending most of yesterday reading a LOT on here I’m now also thinking about building a mixed casino set of used chips...that could be really cool. Truthfully I don’t host games often enough to justify it, but hey, if I only bought stuff I really needed.........

Understandable. Trying to add to you current set could turn in to a lengthy labor of love project considering the scarcity of them. Plus, as good as they are, they are still really kind of the bottom end of the “premium” poker chip spectrum. There are much nicer options out there. Shoot me a message, if you ever decide to sell off the Modern Clays.
