Hello guys!
I’m new here and to poker as well! I’m looking to buy my first set of poker chips but don’t know which denomination/ chip size would fit perfect in my current setup:
• we gather anywhere from 4 to 8 players max, once a week
• a game will often be 5-6 hours long. What would the best structure look like? 20min levels with slow increase? (Ex: 1/2, 2/5, 5/10, 5/15, 10/20, 15/30 etc?)
• does it make sense to get $1 / 5 / 25 / 100 / 500 / chips?
• if not what denoms do you recommend?
• 10/10/7/2/1 will fit the profile?
• I’ll get samples as soon as I figure all of the above.
Hope I didn’t miss anything!
Thank you!

Hi,

You seem to play tournaments.
8 players. I'll assume no rebuy.

96 x T25
96 x T100
40 x T500
60 x T1000 (incl. 12 to color-up the T25 and T100)
4 x T5000 (to color-up the 500)

--> to be rounded per min. quantity per denom. Don't hesitate to buy spares in case of loss / dammage.

You can have starting stacks like this :
12 x T25
12 x T100
5 x T500
6 x T1000

Levels :
1: 25 - 50
2: 25 - 75
3: 50 - 100
4: 75 - 150
5: 100 - 200
6: 150 - 300 --> color-up the T25 with T1000 after this level
7: 200 - 400
8: 300 - 600
9: 400 - 800
10: 600 - 1200
11: 800 - 1600
12: 1000 - 2000
13: 1500 - 3000 --> color-up the T100 with T1000 and T500 with T5000 after this level
14: 2000 - 4000 --> with 10.000 chip per player without rebuy, the game shall end here
15: 3000 - 6000
16: 4000 - 8000
17: 6000 - 12000
18: 8000 - 16000
19: 10000 - 20000 --> color-up the T1000 with T25000 after this level
20: 15000 - 3000

In fact the game shall end at the level where 5% of the total number of chips in play = BB.

With 10.000 starting chips, you'll play 14 levels.
Depending on your levels duration, it'll give you your play time excl. breaks.

Ex:
20' blinds --> 4:40 without breaks
25' blinds --> 5:50 without breaks
30' blinds --> 7:00 without breaks

Again this assume you won't use addons.

Give us your input so that we can fine-tune.

This looks great PERFECT so far!!!
So far (on paper) I think I'll go with 12-12-5-6 (T10000 starting chips) for <=6 players and 8-8-6-6 (T10000 stating chips) for >6 players).
I ordered Magestics, Royals, Dunes & Pharaoh's samples, and will update when I'll get a full set and get the ball rolling.
I have to practice color-up (being a novice and all, I have no idea how to do that). I did saw this video on youtube, but I have yet to put it in practice.
Thank you so much for this detailed map!

Am I the only one that is too stupid to figure out how to use the poker chip calculator?
I used this calculator instead. It's simple & straightforward.

In a week I'll host the POY Tournament (top 6 players). I got the chips ready, got the cards ready, the players will be on time. I'm looking for 5hours of solid play (with breaks).
I'm leaning towards 12-12-5-6-2 (or just go with 8-8-6-6-2 for this format?)
20K Starting stacks (instead of 10K)
24min Levels

1: 25 - 50
2: 50 - 100
3: 100 - 200
4: 150 - 300
10' BREAK --> color-up the T25
5: 200 - 400
6: 300 - 600
7: 500 - 1000
8: 800 - 1600
10' BREAK ->-color-up the T100 & T500
9: 1K - 2K
10: 1K - 3K -->
11: 2K - 4K -->
12: 3K - 6K - > Estimated ENDGAME
13: 5K - 10K
14: 8K - 16K
15: 10K - 20K
26: 15K - 30K

Poker timer estimates the tournament will last about 5 hours
The chips just got in and we haven't got time to test the system out so we can tweak as needed.
What do you think?

Add 25-75.

You have a 1000-3000 (which I do too to color-up the 100 and 500 together) so why not having a 25-75 level ?

75-150 is missing too.

Also drop 500-1000 and add 400-800 and 600-1200.

Same with 5000-1000. Drop it and add 4000-8000 and 6000-12000.

This will make a more balanced structure.

Good deal, looks like a pretty good structure. Just a small note on this point.

color-up the T25 with T100

You should probably plan to only introduce larger chips, T1000 or T5000 at the color ups. Use those chips to acquire the T100s that are already on the table and use those to color up.

PCF's own @Chris Manzoni has a youtube channel full of good advice.

(Less important note, I prefer the actual chip race to round off the odd chips to the round up method. If you want to learn that, this is the best video I have found.)

Just to add, the reason for this is that it makes no sense to introduce chips that are just going to be removed at the next color up anyway. If anything, it actually makes sense to get a jump on removing at least a few chips that will be removed at the next color up anyway.

Wow, a 10 minute video on coloring up? Don't get me wrong, it's well done and makes sense, but it seems like a lot extra complication just to color up.
