New is maybe the wrong word. There's an infinite number of choices (not only design but denominations and quantities of each, etc.). Right now I don't know exactly which direction I'd want to go with any one of those choices. Maybe a better word is indecisive or uneducated.
By the way, thanks for the kind words in the say something nice thread. Which made me check back this thread. I don’t know how, but I missed this last post.
By now you probably got a better idea of what you want. But, here are some things that I thought about for my first set:
Chip Material; ceramic, high-end plastic and compression molded (clay) appeal to me in their own way. The least expensive option are the ceramics. I do prefer plastics and compression clay over them, but ceramics can be special. The unique thing about ceramic, is that the whole chip is a canvas to work with. The edge designs are my favorite, you could do things radically not possible with plastic or clay.
The kind of chip will dictate what kind of design you want to go with.
As for the denomination and quantity; that can be systematically formulated. Think of what kind of game you want to host - cash or tournament, how many players. With cash, you want to figure out what stakes you and your friends feel comfortable playing with (for denominations) I pretty much like it casino style, a few chips for the blinds and tons of workhorse chips. It’s just because I like to see big stacks on the table. For example in a 1/3 game, I would have 100 $1 chips on the table and the rest of them all $5s (full table). I definitely get the $25 and $100 just to complete the set, not out of practicality.
There is a ton of info on the forum for denoms and quantities.
@BGinGA has posted many wise configurations for tournaments.
Maybe in a month or two, I will try to organize a game for NY PCFers with seminumerical. You would be more than welcome to come! I also host games with friends at my apt with stakes of .25/.50 if ever interested
