Fancy cabinets look wonderful, yours certainly does. However, please know that the "heavy as bricks" chips stacked on the shelves are not what was intended to go there. China cabinets were meant for china. China plates stacked high can be heavy, but perhaps not quite the same as racks of chips stacked up. Also, I doubt there is any formal engineering done by the original cabinet maker. They made what looked good.

Bottom line, keep the load on the shelves "reasonable" or else -=- DrStrange.

PS I seem to recall several old disaster threads about crashed shelving. Could be instructive to take a look.

Agreed, 100%. Although I’d mention that most vintage barristers bookcases are robust enough, as they are made with thicker wood and were intended for heavy book loads. But agreed w/r/t china cabinets.

Yeah I had my veneratis on 3rd shelf and saw some flexing

It would be straight forward to add additional bracing without having to screw or otherwise damage the cabinet. The case base looks strong so just adding plank wood cut to fit in squares, one at each end and one in the middle for each shelf. Or even just one in the middle. Put felt on the top and bottm of the squares so they don't scratch the wood.
