Hi all, decided to make an account after this forum served me well and helped me dodge a set of fake chips  Now in a new home i need a new table/top and have decided to invest in some half decent chips to compliment it. Only really played in sporadic stints although i always enjoyed it. Going to try and make a better effort to play more regularly and hopefully collect and or upgrade to some quality chips in the future :)

Welcome to posting!
Are you looking for a cash or tournament set? The table PCF table toppers that are available through the forum are very nice, and there's lots of options for upgradable (and affordable) chips here!

Ohh i will have to look at those topper options as the best ones i can find in the UK are from riverboat gambling, while good looking are not the best. I have just ordered myself a set of milano clays in a few denominations to use as a tournament set for now.

Welcome @ThePrototype!

Welcome to the forums! Whereabout's in Blighty are you located? There are a few "others" from the UK in these parts too

Welcome, and remember:
Before you spend any money on a Ferrari, make sure you have the racetrack and the drivers.
Tables and chairs first, then people (on the "build it and they 'll come" principle) and last but not least, chips.
At any rate "always recruit". Without that motto, no home games and no amateur chipping can be possible.

Would you care to explain your theory in more detail? i got the whole ferrari and track/drivers concept (race trackdays myself) but you lost me after that

Kindest Regards
Dave

Before investing alot of funds into nice chips, if you are seriously looking into hosting/playing regularly you should invest in a decent table and comfortable playing chairs (and a hot dog roller) prior to investing in the chips (if you don't already have these things)
Nice chips are gorgeous, but not as nice if you don't have a great spot to play them

@FordPickup92 thats exactly the perfect less pretentious verson of what i asked for. Thank you for that. I have a really expensive solid oak table where i would like play so this is why i am looking at the table topper route. Sadly a hotdog roller i do not have  :ROFLMAO: but when you can only get the basic frank,s whats the point??

No problem! Lots of topper options out there, take a good long look and get some feedback before choosing one. Some are good, some are terrible lol as I mentioned before the PCF table toppers are nice.

And since you asked .... :whistling:

I'm going to oppose the suggested order.
  1. A table with a topper is step 1. I will be playing on a neoprene topper tonight, because it will be more convenient (It's our ladies night game, so the women will have the regular tables). Neoprene toppers are good. Not as good as a full table, but good.
  2. Chips. The less common the better. Full custom is the best, but obviously casino chips are also prized.
  3. Cards. This may actually be more important than chips. I've played with M&M's before, but they stack for shit, and an hour and a half into the night everyone is broke. Still, cards are important, because paper cards wear out, and shuffling can become tiresome with paper cards.
  4. Tonight will be my 12th consecutive year hosting. Actually longer, but I didn't keep stats until 12 years ago. What I don't have are big comfy chairs. Padded folding chairs have been satisfactory this long, and will be a while longer. We are currently pricing out nicer chairs, but storage is the biggest concern, and that cant be ignored when you need to cover 3 tables in a 1200 sq ft home. Point is, you need chairs, but dont bust the bank getting good ones until you have a good table, chips, and cards.
Oh my god now im flicking through hot dog rollers. Heres me thinking this would be about poker and now im looking through cantering equipment
Catering equipment!

Not to disparage team hot dog, but that's pretty low in the awesome consumables list.
  1. Bourbon
  2. Prepared dinner
  3. Beer
  4. Prepared hot snacks (meatballs, warm cheese dip, sliders, tacos)
  5. All other alcohol
  6. Soda/Water
  7. Hot dogs
  8. Cold snacks (chips, pretzels, sweets)
You get catering equipment for your game, and I'll plan my European vacation around your schedule.

@HMK Those topper mats are pretty nice but ive been looking at this particular Riverboat Topper. Has more of a real table feel to it.

@Poker Zombie i will need a couple more seats for sure. Chips wise i have purchased a set of milano chips for now. Hopefully i can pick up the odd barrel of more desirable chips here and there. My brother got me some new cards recently and they look lovely same as these so i will use them for now.

Milanos are a good chip. I still have a set, though they have been relegated to travel and our celebrity poker tournaments (neither of which has been happening during COVID).

Welcome to the “how to spend money you don’t have” site. I remember when I used to think I only needed the one set of chips

I’ve got a riverboat topper. I had the one that your looking at (it’s bad - the dodgy fake wood racetrack gets in the way) and I replaced it with this one which is much better (but still not great).

I’ve since bought a neoprene topper which I like because it doesn’t have the annoying seam down the middle that the riverboat has. It was around £80 shipped.

@BonScot what do you mean exactly when you say the racetrack got in the way? the only reason i wanted that version is so drinks can be stood on that bit. I dont like the shallow drinks holders i think it makes them easier to tip over

The racetrack reduces the size of the playing area. The wood effect is cheap and plasticky. It’s glued onto the felt and started to come away near the middle of the table (so cards would slide under it). Also the cloth became bumpy near the middle. The other version is so much better. I’ve had mine for around 4 or 5 years and it’s still in good shape.

My players sit with the cup holders directly in front of them so there’s no flying elbows knocking drinks over. On the racetrack version they can put drinks anywhere so they were more liable to being elbowed.

One other advantage of the version I have is the betting line. That resolves any arguments about whether or not someone made a bet. If the chips touch the line or are over it they’re in play.

Is that sitting on top of an existing table or does the rail sit on top of the topper?
I’m getting a rail built to sit on top of my topper so curious to see how you did it.
Sitting on top of an existing table, but the bottom of the rail encircles the playing surface and extends a little way down around the table. I took the method from this link https://www.pokerlistings.com/how-to-build-your-own-poker-table-for-under-300-guide-images-and-plans and adapted it (badly) to what I wanted to do!

I was replying to @Bobb59 mate. He’s got the same type of neoprene topper I have.

Your table looks the part. Too much effort for me. I don’t have the skills or the tools
