Hello,

I'm new to the group, and have been scrolling through for a while just soaking up all the information there is out there. I've played at a buddies house a few times, and want to get my own set to not rely on his crazy schedule to be able to play.

I've looked through both Apache and brpoker and have found some that I like, but none that seem like the perfect set for me. I like the Nile club and casino Royale from Apache, and the Dia de los muertos and tropic oasis from br.

I also saw a custom set from Alibaba on a post on Reddit, and that really piqued my interest.

I guess I'm really just looking for some advice on spots to look for used sets to get started, or if I should just dive into ordering some customs. I know samples are definitely the way to go, so I'll get some of those no matter what route I take.

Thanks!

Welcome. Though most out here scream “buy samples“ , there is something to be said for jumping right in like a drunken sailor on a twister. Buy chips that you like, but ones that hold their value or increase in value. The more they cost, the better chance you have to sell them Later to buy new chips. Don’t mess with Texas

Welcome!

Getting some samples definitely is a great idea, and you can find the best (and safest) deals on (custom) chips on here :)

Going full custom made is a cool route, but be ready for the price per chip to be a bit higher than off the shelf products. Good luck and have fun!

Welcome! Absolutely start with samples, and if I had to make a recommendation I would say consider the custom route the Alibaba chips are pretty great given the price and shipping rates/wait times. Definitely dont rush in to anything, take your time and if you have any questions, ask!!

Welcome! I just went through the sample dance.

I really wanted to like Nile Club, but they are just kind of low quality chips. You’ll see once you get a sample (or who knows, maybe you’ll love them).

Tikis/DDLM are both pretty darn nice sets. I also ended up ordering a bunch of China clay samples (Milanos, Majestics, Royals, Dunes, and Pharaoh) and that was a great call because they’re all very nice chips for the price of about $0.50/chip.

I ended up going with a CC (China clay) Pharaoh set for cash games, and I’ve ordered a Royals set for tournament play. Good luck and have fun! And post pics once you’ve got your set!

Hello, welcome and enjoy the trip. Remember, pretty much any chip you can get from Apache, BR, any of the other great forum merchants or from the Classifieds here, can be resold for very close to what you paid for them. So, although I do believe in getting samples (because you'll be surprised how different each chip feels, looks and sounds when you hold it in your hand). I also believe that you really can't go very wrong. Now, if you go crazy and have a custom set made that is way out on the fringe then you're on your own.. Otherwise, you're pretty safe.

I'll have to keep an eye out for a set of 300 or 400 chips for a cash game to pop up on the classifieds.

I already have a pretty solid idea of what I want for the inlay on a custom set, just not really sure on the colors/edge markings for them. I'm torn between being responsible and finding a good deal, and going into the deep end with a custom set right off the bat.
