Hello, Len from HI. New to the forum and getting back into the game. Been playing with “rookie” level chips and when playing with a few of my groups really notice the difference between my heavyweight clay composites and real clays. Have been looking to upgrade the set for a while, and stumbled across this forum. Looking forward to hearing opinions on sets, breakout of chips for solid tournament sets and other poker topics.

Hi Len, welcome, glad you found your way here. I was in the same boat as you a year ago this week. I'm proud to say I know have an awesome tourney set...and a cash set...some other bits of sets...and some other chips that aren't really part of a set...in essence way more chips than I'll ever need in my lifetime. Hope you find what you're looking for :)

You mentioned you were interested in tournament breakdowns? Aside from the stuff you'll find in the forums, there's a great tool that a member (I can't remember who) made for choosing your set size/breakdown. Link here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1NQ7-uvyM71UOabYJQ22IjY9Fj0y6e_Dl1IRpoGWrqAg/edit?usp=sharing I'd also recommend taking a look at some of @Chris Manzoni 's Youtube videos that talk about that, as well as many other topics like how to run a home tournament, etc: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpOtRc3qrrEKXXV7jFAfgVQ

thank you for passing on the info. I see myself hosting a combo of cash and tourney games at home, so I essentially looking to buy a custom or semi-custom 1000 chip set that should cover me nicely for 6-10 people. I will definitely take a look at those youtube videos!

Welcome Len! Endless info on breakdowns for both cash and tourney can be found here on the forum. Lots of people will say do your reserch with the serch function but... that can be a pain man. Feel free to post your number of players, lowest denom and your total Starting stack (2k, 5k, 10k, 25k) and I am sure there will be plenty of people that will jump in and help you with an optimal breakdown. Though it sounds like you have been in the game for a while.

Funny you mention players that are not chippers not noticing the difference between quality chips and cheaper sets. This is very true!! The majority of people couldn't care less about the chips in play. Honestly most of the time it seems they will pick slugged plastic (composite) because "dude these are awesome... they are so heavy!" Lol

When giving advice to new members I always say a quality table and comfortable chairs is what you should concentrate on first before going off the deep end with clay chips. Chipping is an easy hole to fall in but a long slow climb back out! At least that has been my experience, building a fun an inviting atmosphere will do more for your game then awesome chips ever will! (Time to duck to avoid chippers throwing rotten tomatoes! Lol)

Anyways enjoy your chipping journey and If there is ever any way that I can be of assistance please feel free to ask!

As I'm sure many others will tell you, it's better to get a 500 chip cash set and a 500 chip tournament set instead of one 1000 chip set for mixed use.

For one, having premium clay chips adds a level of security to your game as the chips are harder to obtain than dice chips are. However, when you use one set for both cash and tournaments, this layer of security is gone. Not that you don't trust your friends, but it's all too easy to slip a couple of T25s off the table during tournament night, and then next week when you're playing a cash game, the chips magically reappear and the bank comes up $50 short...

Perhaps more importantly, using a combined set for both cash and tournament will both limit your options and increase the price you should expect to pay. For example, all of the Paulson clay chips that come to market here are either from casinos that never opened, rebranded, or closed. Since these casinos will have lots of primary and secondary cash chips, it'll be easy to find a cash set of $1s and $5s and $25s and a few $100s and $500s, but when you get into the higher demon chips like $1000s, $5000s, $25,000s, etc. these chips are in high demand and low supply, and sometimes go for $10-25 per chip, especially if they're oversized. On the other hand, casinos typically have tournament sets that you can pick up in the area of $1/chip, including the higher denominations, as the casino breakdowns will match the breakdowns that you need. Although if it's a relabel or custom set you're after, this constraint doesn't matter too much.

Thank you for all the feedback. I have been finding that its hard to break down a 1000 chip set into both cash and tourney…..so I can see where it would be beneficial to have two separate sets…plus it opens up options to have some variety in the collection. I do like the idea of plaques as well for $5000 and $25000, so I considering that as well.

Thanks again!

The dice chips definitely served their purpose, but upgrading is in order. Not sure if i want to go with pure clays or try ceramics for a while. I know they are easy to customize, and honestly i have seen some pretty nice sets on here which don’t break the bank. I plan on primarily playing tourneys, so going with a 360-500 test for now may be a start. Thanks again for advice!

I just got here recently. I'm already scaring my wife by talking about $2/chip set to $9/chip a set.

I've ordered 6 different sample sets in that time and bought a 600 set of ceramics.
