New to custom chips -- need advice (1 Viewer)

I’m the only one who even seems to be interested in getting these custom chips done, since most of my friends are perfectly fine playing with...

yeah, you'll fit in here just fine; this is practically a mantra among us chip snobs.

Oh how far we’ve come.
We joined around the same time and I know how much of a journey it has been for me with the little chip purchasing I have done. I've lost count of the number of thread wormholes I've been down in the last two months. Somehow today that wormhole lead me back to this one and it was way too good of an opportunity not to comment. Good luck with that search! ;)

I'm glad this thread popped back up, I hadn't seen it before. Congratulations on a very interesting and productive two months on the forums!

If it wouldn't betray any confidences about your game, I'd love to see some of the vintage chips your crew has been playing with, and I'm sure I'm not alone. When you say "vintage", do you mean old casino chips from vegas and such? Making a playable set out of those would be quite an undertaking. Or do you mean something more like chips from the early 20th century? Playable sets of those are hard to assemble as well, depending on just which types you're interested in. Either way, I'm sure your collection is a sight to see, and pr0n is always welcome. :)

... and regarding the original post, are you still contemplating a custom set? Relabels or CPC? Or even [gasps heard from the Paulson junkies] customs from Abbiati or Matsui?

To be honest, the easy part of this is CPC and J5, p5 of any of the other talented designers here.

Choosing your chip colours and edgespots can be an exercise in frustration!

As will be the wait - unless you're very lucky with the mold schedule, I would plan on waiting at least 6 months, potentially more for less frequent molds like E&C.

They were just antique Italian gambling plaques with no denominations, we assigned denoms to each color. Nothing that exciting.

One thing you may consider, since cost seems to be less of a factor, is to design your own mold, have CPC produce your J5 designed chips, and send you the molds after the production run. That way you are doubly sure other chips won’t be made that are too similar.

Oh my goodness, a custom mold would be incredible!! Do they really do that?

I don’t see why they wouldn’t. Just pay the machine costs.

Edit: And art cost of course.

I feel like if you are going this route you may as well shoot the moon and go Paulson and create a house mold. Where there are means there is a way.

Just pay the machine costs.

There's a lot more than just the tooling costs. David Spragg talked about it here and here. Those costs are why David thinks that making a new Roman mold would never be feasible - there wouldn't be enough demand for those chips at the price they would cost to be able to pay back the overhead, and a new Roman mold would be one of the most popular molds ever thanks to people wanting high-fidelity Rounders replicas.

It would be even worse for a new mold for the exclusive use of a single home buyer. It would take someone with very deep pockets and a frankly ridiculous love for custom chips to spend that much money on an accessory for their poker game. So it's conceivable, but less likely than I think you're thinking.

Paulson won't sell custom chips, let alone a custom mold, to non-casinos. Various folks have persuaded and/or hoodwinked them into bending the rules to get custom chips, but apparently it gets harder to do that with each success. I suspect getting a custom mold without actually being an actual casino planning to actually use the chips for actual public gambling is next to impossible.

... but who knows what the truly resourceful can accomplish? Best of luck to anyone who tries.

WW mold??

$100K buy-in. In for $100. Out for $200. Problem solved.

If we're legitimately pitching a custom CPC mold or a Paulson hoodwink v3.0 as a means for customization/game security, has anyone considered reaching out to David to ask if the brass dust in the weighted white clay could be replaced by gold powder? Then incorporate that clay as a spot color throughout your lineup (or at least the high denoms).

Just found this gem of a thread. @Windwalker will we ever see the finished product or is that out of the question for security issues?

i think he's decided to just buy enough sets of rare & expensive chips that nobody would ever be able to procure enough of all the right ones to be able to affect the game anyway  :ROFLMAO:

Nope, I just didn’t see it :)

Not sharing anything yet. The primary big game set I use right is the Jack high denom set. I did relabel a couple of BTP and SB chips for denoms that didn’t exist in the Jacks.

You are everything we all wish we had, bottomless pit of cash for any chips our hearts desire...

WW, back in September you said:
They were just antique Italian gambling plaques with no denominations, we assigned denoms to each color. Nothing that exciting.

But then last week, elsewhere, you posted:
We had been using the same Italian non-denominational plaques for years, just re-assigning values as our game got bigger. I wanted to do something nice for the group, and originally thought a custom set might be a good idea. When I had a chance to handle CPC chips and understand timelines, I opted instead to use Jack Detroit as the main chip, relabeling a couple of others to make the $25k and $100k.

Unfortunately, the group’s immune system coughed up and spat these chips back out. I guess there’s a lot more nostalgia and comfort attached to those plaques than I thought there would be. Plus, they belonged to one of the players’ grandfathers, so there’s that.

Sorry to hear your friends don't share your tastes in poker chips and that the Jacks didn't work out. I hope they at least appreciated the effort you put in! It was a thoughtful gesture, regardless.

I'm more curious than ever now to see what your group's plaques look like! I hope sometime you'll have the opportunity and inclination to post some pictures. Sentimental value counts for a lot!

I am pretty sure he did post them somewhere maybe the pr0nographic thread, they are the normal older european jettons you see on eBay now and then. Not sure if they are acrylic, bakelite or what but certainly not compression molded
