Hi,

I'm in the UK and need to source a new set for my home games. Need about 500 chips I guess for games of up to 10 runners. The choice of chips here is pretty poor so I'm looking at buying from US and shipping here if it's not prohibitivly expensive. My budget would only be about $300 so they won't be collectible but I'd like something a bit nicer than the dice chips on offer here! I'm aware of "Apache Poker Chips" but wondered if you guys had other suggestions for chips/retailer.

Many thanks in advance,

Chipz105

A medium flat rate box is $72 to the UK with a weight limit of 20lb or around 600 chips. That leaves you in the 50c/chip range so standard ceramics or china clays if bought new. You didn't mention if you want to cash or tourney.

There's a GBP denominated cash set in the classifieds that may be another option: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/custom-£-sterling-set.41055/

Hi,

Thanks. Will do.

All the best,

Chipz105.

$300 shipped or $300 for just chips?

Shipped preferably but am thinking this might not leave me much choice.

Tournament set. Will check out the link though thank you.

I'd quite like ceramics for a change. Hadn't really looked at them as thought they were more expensive.
Should I avoid china clays? Is the quality OK?

It's really personal preference. You should get samples of CC, ceramics, ceramic hybrids, and clay. Most of us start with ceramics and quickly upgrade out of them. With being out of the US I strongly suggest not to purchase something until you know exactly what you want. The market to sell chips like CC is a lot less also. So not only did you lose a arm and leg getting CC to you, you may have to drop the price of them just to move them in that part of the world.

To summarize get samples. Sleep on your decision for a couple days. Go back to your samples, do some math. Sleep on it some more... Then decide you want a nice set of Paulsons. You can thank me later for all the money you saved.

If you decide to go down the route of CC, please take me in your for sale thread so I can say I told you so!

Always good to meet a fellow UK chipper; whereabouts are you?

David at Marlow Casino Chips I've found to be great to deal with, not to mention the fact that he offers a really good range.

For the money, I don't think you can go wrong with these:

Nice design, decent feel, stackability and within budget. I had a big set at one point and they are perfect as a starter set. I have about 12 left over I use as a random shuffle stack... More than happy to send you them through the post if you cover postage / return postage?

You've had some good advice already. I'll echo the "get samples" mantra - it's the only way for you to know your personal preference. I may not like china clays but you may love them or vice versa!

Now I will add that not all ceramics are created equal. I have had several sets and would only get regular ceramics from ABC or hybrids from Sunfly. Cheaper ceramics often have problems with spinners which I find frustrating. Again, best to get samples in hand before you commit your cash.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the need for new chips is being prompted by the fact I have a set of Paulson Private Cardroom chips that I may need to sell soon. I though going for something completely different like ceramics might make me miss them less but in reality I know I won't!

I actually like some ceramics but the question I was answering was referring to china clays. :)

Hi,

I'm in Essex. I wasn't aware of Marlow so am looking at chips there now. This might be a more sensible option than importing.
Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the link.
I think he gets them imported from the USA, so there might well be customs charges to pay as an FYI. Failing that, these guys are based in Europe and are really good:

Intrigued by these on eBay, too...

Also, if you are after really good quality ceramic, hit @Bosco24 up!

Hey, this all sounds eerily familiar.

I just bought my first CC set from Apache, 600 chips strong, delivered to Essex UK. Import tax cost just shy of £70 iirc

I got a set of Majestics.

Hope this helps, neighbour!

Hi JuniperCat,

How weird!
So postage of approx. $72 (as quoted above) plus £70 import tax?

Cheers.

You can do a tournament set for 1 table of 10 players with about 300 chips. Should be able to stretch your buying dollar (uhm, pound) a little more.
Great point. I was a bit fixated on a set of 500 but 300-400 could work and I'd be able to afford better chips!

Welcome,

I went for the Royal chips from Apache.. as stated above delivery and import tax needs to be included, I relabelled some chips so that was an extra also..

Anyone interested in splitting a set of 1000 custom inlays? We could design something generic with £ inlays if we wanted.
Cost about £275.00 each plus postage and taxes (approx. £350 all in I think). Lots of colours and designs to choose from.

Group buy open for another 4 days.

Get samples. You don’t want to get stuck with a set of chips that you:

1) might end up not liking
2) spent a lot of money on after VAT, shipping, etc.
3) could have a difficult time reselling
4) could take a significant loss on if/when reselling

This goes for any chip/chip type you might be interested in

Yeah, they look awesome to be fair. I should really look at getting a sample set soon as I am keen to see what they feel like.
