I wish I could agree with this. I think that probably over 90% of the people who play in casinos would not care if the chips were Paulson or Icon. They are there for other reasons entirely.
People complain about the slippery chips at Casino Arizona all the time.

I agree that players don’t care about Paulson vs other mfgs generally or about the aesthetic qualities, but they absolutely do care about playability.

Have the RFID's changed the cash out process? I am imagining the ability to almost completely automate the cash out process. Dump chips in bucket and insert in machine that processes the amount you click on a screen "Agree" and boom your money is dropped out of a slot like at a cash machine or you can forward the amount to your casino card/players rewards card.

Could even buy chips the same way on the way onto the floor.

Manufacturer & chipper opinions aside, it's amazing to me that in a world so focused on branding and advertising, that something a customer handles every single visit to the business is allowed to be so unaesthetically appealing.

I'd bet that there are at least ten people that sign off on every ad or design detail, yet when it comes to chips the looks are an afterthought.

Is cost the only reason these icon chips exist?

Because I thought that chips (in general) were a marginal cost for casinos.

Like if a fast food burger cost $1 for the cheap version and $1.25 for the deluxe version, why not spend the extra and get chips that last longer and have less errors while the cashiers and dealers are handling/counting them. Less frustration with your customers handling/stacking them.

Think about the working stacks at a craps table. Chips need to stack high and be used fast. Plastics chips don't work well on a craps table. I've seen a craps dealer barely touch a plastic working stack in a less than loving way and it just exploded all over the place. And I don't even want to think about poker tables.

Then, there's the image of the casino. Holding cheap plastic chips just feels... cheap and fake.

But that's just my opinion.

I guess the only reason they go with ICON is cost.

Because, as I read here, these ICON chips are plastic. If durability was a concern, casino could still go with B&G (my favourite after THC and TRK in terms of feeling) or BJ for instance. I guess that since they are plastic chips, it’s possible to drop a RFID chip inside too.

At Resorts World, at the pai gow table, when i cashed out they took all my chips and put them in stacks and then printed a ticket I could cash like a slot ticket at a machine. Saves time in the cage line and reduces chip reloads at the tables.
I still am weirded out by it, need to wear my tinfoil hat at the tables.

Yeah, I grabbed some Royal Caribbeans that ICON produced on my cruise and the worn out 5's (buried down in the stack) were so faded you couldn't hardly read the denomination. Yes, they were slipperier than a used car salesman in a Crisco bath. The 50 cent was another step down from the already underwhelming 1's and 5's.

But if they wear like that, isn't it because they are printed by a (bad) sublimation process ? Or because their surface can be scratched very easily ?
If they are not durable, I guess casino will abandon them very fast.

where is the puke emoji
If Paulson keeps loosing business maybe we can buy them out XD
Didn't Palm Gaming International own clay chip making equipment? If so, what happened to it? That would have been a LOT cheaper than buying Paulson (GPI). Perhaps THE missed opportunity was allowing the Blue Chip Co. to slip into GPI's hands. But that would have taken a wealthy person to step forward and make the "investment".

So we all agree that the icon chips suck, but could they come up with a less imaginative design? It is possible to make a ceramic style chip look good if you put a few minutes into it.

The word "Palms." with a period after it could not be more uninspired.

It's not a period. It's a registered trademark symbol. But your point is still valid.
