Hey PCF! Heard about the forum from some youtube videos and wanting to get into hosting some tournaments with some interested friends. We are starting from 0, so have no chips, and my biggest question is, where does one start? I don't have the capital to invest in some of the chip sets I see all you fine people owning, but hope to let the tournament winnings (or at least a set aside pot for improved chips) to upgrade to some quality chips. Starting with 10 people, so what I need to know is:
-Best chip set to start out with
-Best starting stacks and break out for field of 10
-Anything else I need to know on this journey!

Also, I'll be building our poker table- oval table- with felt, padding and cup holders form some plans I found (handy woodworker, so this should be fun). Any advice is welcome, thanks all!

Welcome! Once you determine how many chips you need from the above guide, you can figure out what your budget can get you.

This may be of interest to you. https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...laddin-stardust-bellagio-aria-pny-etc.101141/ The prices are modest and the quality is decent and you can get off the ground for $2-300. These types of group buys tend to happen every couple months with rotating designs. If ceramic chips aren't your thing, there are other options too. Get samples to know what you like before buying a set.

For your table, there is a whole forum dedicated on the subject: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/forums/poker-tables-toppers-seating-and-furniture.14/

There are a number of design choices. Racetrack, raised rail, cupholders, lighting, dealer cutout, etc. Check out the gallery here and of table builders (some are forum sponsors here) for inspiration.

Hello and welcome! Other things to know would be do you plan to play cash or tournament, the stakes if you are playing cash and what your budget is. That will really determine the direction that you go with chips. Also...get samples.

I will probably get banned now, but....get some dice chips!

Alright alright everybody, calm down! Put down yer pitch forks and hear me out!

You can get lots of used dice chips for next to nothing. Since they are not denominated you can fool around with different structures (both cash and tournament structures). After a few months you will be in a much better position to make a good decision both on which chips you want and the breakdown. And once you've upgraded you can release the dice chips back into the wild for the same as you bought then for, to the next generation of degens. (Might even be that you all abandoned poker by then and you will have lost nothing.)

Also, you will not be the first to have started out with dice chips! :)

I'll see myself out...

CHIPS
My first set of denominated chips were the Casino Royale chips sold by Apache Poker Chips. I bought 600 at first (just for tourneys), then I bumped it up to the full 1000 to cover cash and tournaments. If I remember correctly it's like .25¢/chip, so 1000 chips is like $300 shipped.

For 1 table of 10 players you probably only need 400 chips of the right denominations, and you might be able to afford a set of 600 chips for $150ish.

There are also other similar chips that players on here like... Milanos, Majestics, Monte Carlo, Pharaohs, etc.. all can be purchased with denominations for .20¢-.50¢ per chip.

I've since purchased compressed clay and ceramic custom chips for much more $$ and my players still love the Casino Royale chips. I personally love the feel and weight of them, but I also dislike how over time they have gotten harder to grip. I've spilled stacks trying to pick up a barrel of them multiple times, as they seem to lose their tackiness over time (5 years). I also prefer to be able to choose my own colors for chips hence my insistence with creating and purchasing fantasy custom sets.

With that in mind, if you want to design your own chips (or purchase chips of other members designs) the Chinese manufactures provide really nice chips for cheap. I'm dealing with having waited over 2 months for my chips (when they were guaranteed to deliver in 3 weeks), so there is definitely a trade-off dealing with these manufactures... but I was able to design fully custom ceramic chips and will take delivery of 1800 chips for roughly $900. .50¢/chip fully custom is a great deal compared to a lot of other options.

TOURNAMENT
For tournaments there are a lot of starting stack options.... I like to choose the stack based on:
1. Blind levels
2. How deep you want each player, for betting purposes
3. How long you want the tourney to last.

The most important aspect to a tourney for me is #2 above. I used to play at a game that offered T5000 in chips with a starting blind level of 25/50, 15 minute levels, and only the first 2 levels offered rebuys. By level 2, players were shoving all-in every hand. If I didn't have a good hand in level 1 or 2 I'd look down at maybe T3500 in chips with only a few minutes to go before rebuys close, and naturally a couple players at the table have already tripled up because of the all-in actions that had already taken place.

That game felt more like a lottery-lucky chances game than a strategic game, so I stopped going. My games typically are 15 minute levels, 25/50 blinds, but starting stacks are never less than T10,000. My most recent tournament was:
2 tables
18 players
25/50 starting blinds
15min levels
T14,000 starting with T1,000 extra for on-time players
Rebuys through level 4 (1 hour of play), T10,000 chips.
Add-on optional at break of T6,000 chips.

The chip breakdown (20 players):
T25 x8 [160 needed]
T100 x8 [160 needed]
T500 x4 [80 needed + 40 extra for color ups]
T1000 x7 [140 needed + 10 extra for color ups]
T5000 x1 [20 needed + 65 extra for color ups]

I also typically prefer to do 6x T500 and 6x T1000, but for this tournament I actually had less bank of T500 chips than T1000 chips.

So obviously for 10 players you'd need much less than the above number of chips I used for 20 players (560).... and you'd definitely need less chips if player starting stacks are T7500, or T8000, or T10000, etc.

I did get really close to running out of T1,000 chips during the add-on and color ups, but I had enough T5,000 chips to make change to cover. The structure above was a massive hit. Players felt they were deep enough to "make some moves" while not too deep that the game lasted too long. I started the game at 3pm and budgeted 6 hours for the game. It actually only lasted 4.5 to 5 hours with plenty of action throughout.

I was able to use the 2nd table as a cash game table once 8 players were eliminated from the tourney (10 for final table).

Hope this helps. Welcome, and good luck!

Yea this is great, I played with it earlier. Looking like I get the chip counts all set. Any recs on the type of chips to buy or a good place to look? Starting the more affordable route before upgrading. Thanks!
I would advise against the affordable route or samples. Jump right in like a drunken sailor . No goats, no glory

For 'affordable' chips (less than $1 ea) there tend to be 3 kinds

- Plastic chips with metal slug inserts. About 20c per chip, come in a number of designs from different stores. Not much resale on these so you won't see them on PCF. People on here rag on them, but most everyone I've played with in real life has no complaints or just think anything beyond dice chips are fancy. To be honest, stopping here is the sane thing to do, they function just fine and you can find whatever denominations you'll need fairly easily.

- China Clay Chips. Injection molded 'clay'. Typically 40c to 50c a chip. Available from apache poker chips and other similar vendors. People complain about the smell of these sometimes, and I believe they're not the most durable.

- Ceramic chips (actually plastic). Higher quality plastic than metal slugged, weigh less as they have no insert. There's a big range in quality depending on who makes them. Can be fairly cheap from the Tina Molds group buys on this forum (33c to 40c a chip), or more expensive from higher end manufacturers (80c to $1, BRProPoker, SunFly). Typically very durable. Just about any design you can think of can be made on these if you want to go the custom route. These don't have labels, as designs are printed across the entirety of the chip face.

Beyond that you're looking at custom clay chips from CPC or former casino clay chips, which raises the cost to prohibitively expensive quite quickly.

Do small orders of a few kinds of chips (10~20), see if you like the weight, feel, and stacking of them. Lower end chips are traded a bit less here so it's harder to find them for sale used, but you can often get a deal if you do. First I'd figure out the exact numbers of chips you want for the kinds of games you want to play, and then think about what chips will meet those needs.

This wouldn't fit your exact needs as it's a cash set, but here's an example of a user selling some China Clays for about 20% less than what it'd cost on apachepokerchips.com

Welcome bud ! Enjoy the forum. Really great resource and your gonna end up meeting and talking to some really great people here as well.

Best advice I can give on chips ( as I’m new on here as well ) is take your time with your decision, get your hands on some samples of chips you may think you want, figure out a budget, if your budget is tight not a big deal at all start small and work your way up.

I went from claysmith “the mint” chips. really good starter set in my opinion as i used them for several years. From there I picked up a “majestic card room” cash set from apachepoker.com…then found this lovely forum and bought my first set of paulsons.

There’s a lot of really knowledgeable people here and I’ve been helped out a great deal along the way. Just take your time and figure out what you want. Good luck ! Reach out if you have any questions I’ll help out anyway i can.

Hello and welcome!

Believe it or not, it is best to start with a table, and comfortable chairs. Then you can worry about the chips and cards.

If you didn't want to spring for a dedicated table right away, then you can opt for a thick roll-up neoprene mat.

Chairs #1. By far the most important.

Thanks everyone, these are super helpful resources. I have ordered some samples from Apache to check out some different chips to get into. I also noticed the group buy, as @kaida mentioned, but I was curious as a newb to poker chips, what is the difference between Textured No Mold Chips and Cards Mold chips? I might be interested in the group buy as I liked some of the chips and the group seemed very enthused about this month's buy, but couldn't find in here a description of the differences and why I might want this buy vs. waiting until March buy. Thanks!

No molds chips have a flat surface. Cards Mold chips have a small impression on the chip, in the style of playing cards and a ring in the center. Here's an example.
