Hey all!

I've always been into poker, specifically NLH, but never really had the opportunity to play in-person - always found the stakes were too high at casinos and that I needed to master more basic concepts. Well I'm taking the plunge back into this hobby! Currently, I mostly play the micros online but I'm hoping to carve out a space in the house for a home game. That being said, I'm looking to get input and suggestions on the following:

  • Decent poker table/chairs
    • Treating this like an investment into nice furniture but don't want to break the bank
    • Essentially want something nicer than the foldable tables that are more temporary
    • Ideally would have a built-in shuffler but don't mind buying a standalone unit if that sufficiently offsets the cost
  • Second set of poker chips (my first set was a cheap one from a department store)
    • Targeting micros for cash games
    • Versatile enough for tourneys
    • Easy to shuffle (as I don't play in-person, I never learned to do this)
Not sure if I'm missing anything else as far as accessories but please feel free to suggest anything else you feel adds to the experience.

Looking forward to learning!

Welcome to PCF. What sort of budget are you looking at? If you do a deep dive into this forum you will see there is a huge range in chip prices.

The first set I bought was a 500 piece CPC rounders tournament set that I use for cash games as well. The $25 chips are used as a quarter, the $100 chips are used as one dollar and the $500 chips are used for $5.00

I think maybe $300 would be the max for chips unless there's something in particular that catches my eye. The dice chip set really feels awkward to me - looking for something with a "casino feel". I guess some additional context to add would be that I don't ever foresee having more than 8-10 people playing at once and really, if I'm being honest, it'll probably be something more like 5-6. If I'm shelling out that much cash though I kinda want to be able to accommodate the 8 players or at least a few rebuys if it's less folks.

Edit: Just realized the CPC Rounders sets are $500+ so maybe I have to rethink my budget or the quality I'm expecting.

Welcome to PCF. Please say you’re not into gematria.

Thanks - had to look up what that was so probably safe to say no I'm not.  Although it looks like it can be related to ciphers - I do work in Cyber so I have come across it in that context with decoding messages. Not sure if that's what you were getting at.

Just an inside joke around here based upon your username---f you stick around long enough you will get it. Anyhow, JK, and welcome again to PCF!

You can check out vendors such as Gorilla Gaming and Chanman for tables/chairs. Also, not a vendor, but BBO Poker has some nice tables too IMO. As for chips, do your research and the mantra around here is to "get samples" before fully committing.

Best of luck,

TS

Check out the cards mold group buys. They have put together some nice options.

Ahhh okay gotcha! I'll look at Gorilla Gaming and Chanman. Previously looked at BBO and it seemed a bit pricey but I'll check it out again.

Will do - thanks!

Meant to ask - anyone have good resources for upping my level of play? Looking for stuff geared towards online and live play - my issue is that things seem to be catered to absolute beginners or it's some advanced play that I have no business learning about at this point, especially given my stakes.

welcome to the forum, there are tons of VA members about. @grebe plays a lot online iirc and depending on where you are in VA may be local.

I'm a little further south than NoVa--just moved. Basically equidistant of NoVa, RVa, and Charlottesville.

Hmmmm...is that who I saw sneaking around out there....LOL!!

Sounds like he might be close.

Welcome!! The only advice I can provide on chip budgeting is...

...never mind, I forgot what I was going to say.

It sounds like you might live close. I live in Spotsylvania, West of Fredericksburg. We play .50/$1 every couple of weeks, but FYI, it plays much bigger. Feel free to hit me up if you ever want to shuffle some inspiration for throwing your budget in the trash. :ROFLMAO:

Good luck!!

@boltonguy ......well that's awkward.

He is/was one of the most active members* posting stuff about hands etc and could have probably pointed you to resources.

My family just moved to Culpeper so we're fairly close! I think that might be at the top of my budget unfortunately so wouldn't be a regular thing at those stakes just yet. Looking for a .10/.25 or .25/.50 game but I don't think there's many folks playing micros like that - I could be wrong.

Watch Video like CrushLivePoker and playing with better player will help to give more insight on what to do and not to do.

Reading didn’t help much after you know the basic and done the solid foundation

Also, Welcome to PCF

Yes I am back. Entered bizarro-land for a week there.
My suggestion would be play optimal poker and play optimal poker two by andrew brokos.
