Hey everyone. Recently joined the site. Love just looking through all of the amazing chips on here. I've played casual poker with just friends. I've only played poker with dice chips.... Don't kill me...

Wanting to get more into poker and try to get a regular game going with some friends. Would love to be able to host some cool poker nights with great chips and tables. Already have a set of Majestic Star samples on the way. Hope to try and play a game with chip denominations as I've never done that. My be tricky to convince my friends as they are very casual players as well and may see it as more confusing.

In the future I'd love to work up the courage to play some live poker at a casino and potential get into online poker for microstakes.

Hi,

Welcome to PCF, it always better to have Denom chip over non denom chip

I abit lost how it can be more confusing? Unless your players will double check like like

"so this chip with a big $5 on it is $5, are you sure it not a $1? I like it to be $1 despite it had a big denom that say $5" or

"So how do I know this chip with $5 denom is $5, do I follow the number on it or the number actually mean another codebreaker number like $1"

I agree with ya. To me it just seems like it’ll be easy, but most of the friends I play with now have probably never play with denominated chips.

I plan on getting me a decent starter set for cash games and see how they like it.

Welcome!
Do your players associate a particular color chip with a specific dollar amount? Maybe you can tell us what they are used to/what you are playing with now.

For example:
White chips = $1
Red chips = $5
etc.

Nope. We are very small stakes. Usually buy in with $10. Poker is more so the excuse to get together. Each buy in gets 50 dice chips.

They just play a chip is a chip. Usually start with 1 chip/ 2 chip blinds and move it up throughout the night.

Nice. So essentially you're setting up for a .20/.40 game. Are you playing tournament? You mentioned the blinds moving up throughout the night.

Yeah we usually try to do tournament style, but if it gets to late and a large stack needs to leave we often let them “cash out” for the number of buy ins that cover. So $10 buy in for 50 chips if they have 100 chips we’d give em $20.

I know that’s now how tournaments go, but this is a very relaxed group that isn’t specifically there for the poker.

Got it. Well, if you let players cash out at any point in the game then denoms is definitely the way to go. Yes, you could in theory count all the chips you have in front of you and then multiply by .20 but I'm guessing you and your crew would rather play more cards than doing arithmetic. It makes the game cleaner and simpler - not to mention you'll have more fun putting a sweet set together (bc the combinations are mindbogglingly endless).

Give this thread a read. It really helped me understand how I should go about thinking about my set.

Well down the rabbit hole I go...

I got a Majestic sample set in... realized I didn't have other sets to compare it to rather than dice chips, so off to order more samples!

Ordered a sample set of Tiki's including the dealer button. Also ordered a sample set of Jack Casino Cincinnati Paulsons, Royals, Milanos, and Showdowns. Really just trying to cover most of my bases of easily accessible options.

Was going to also order a sample of casino royale, but they were sold out. Hoping the Showdowns give me a similar feel to what the royales would.
