Hey guys. New member here in Cincinnati, Ohio. I've been holding onto a friends 13g dice chips for years, but he's finally wanting them back. I used to host poker for 8-15 people weekly but, unfortunately, it's gotten harder and harder to put games together...obviously that isn't stopping me from wanting to buy myself a new set of chips!

Trying to decide what chips to buy has sent me deep down the rabbit hole. I would love paulsons, but old casino chips make me feel kind of dirty...I'm not sure I'm wanting to stretch for custom CPC chips, just because I don't know if we play enough to really justify it. I'm leaning towards a set of Majestics (potentially relabeled custom). I'm really not sure about anything in between those options, so I'm trying to learn what I can here.

Anyway, I really just wanted to pop in and introduce myself. I look forward to going deeper down this rabbit hole and meeting some of you guys along the way.

Welcome to the rabbit hole!

What sort of budget are you on? Have you looked into the upcoming chip room sale? @TheChipRoom

Sale details and prices have not been posted yet. But these chips look to be in good condition.

Budget is a tough question for me...I couple potentially spend on a great set that I LOVE, but I'm just not sure I'll get enough use from these chips to justify a $1500+ set.

I've purchased some Majestic/Royal/Paulson samples, and I think I could get behind a set of the Majestics. I'm not very knowledgeable on the other options that are considered high quality. I guess I should grab some samples of the ceramic chips people seem to like around here.

I don't know anything about this upcoming chip sale, but definitely keep to learn more...what kind of chips do they have?

Wow thank you for showing this to me! I looked over some past sales, and I never imagined I could get a set of paulsons so reasonably. I will definitely be watching out for the next sale!

TBH though, I have a sample of the majestic star paulsons from apache and they are too heavily used for my taste... most of them are worn enough to have ultra rounded corners and couldn't stand on end to save their lives. Lots of visible wear, and I kind of feel like I'm touching 10,000 hands every time I handle a chip... the couple that are sharp, however, I love.

That being said, this upcoming sale looks to be much crisper chips than the last. I guess I just have to hope they are a decent price and I can get I them

Any tips on buying one of these drops?

Be ready if looking to participate in a chip room sale....everything is usually sold out in between 1 second and 15mins. So be ready windows open with paypal ready. Prices vary for each sale depending on quantity and quality of what is avail with the 1,5,25 denims chips usually the cheapest and most worn (at least for the primary set), secondaries are most often new untouched and more expensive...denoms of 100+,0.25,0.50, 2.50 chips are more expensive and tend to sell out fast. Some sales also require a percentage of each chip as a order maximum in order to encourage buying sets instead of someone buying all the 500's for example. The current sale is for Jumers chips...

Good luck

If you’re still trying to justify how much it costs to buy chips, you’re not far enough down the rabbit hole yet! JK. Welcome to PCF!

Thank you for the tips! I do expect them to go fast so I'm trying hard to figure out what I really want....which is proving harder than I thought.

I had initially set out to make either a cash set (.25, 1, 5, 20?, 100?) or a tourney set. I was thinking about doing a T25, but I realize that's going to be very difficult with these chip room sales. I would like to get some higher chip denoms for a tourney set, and I'm not too keen on trying to modify chips on my own (a bit too OCD for that)...It looks like I would need to make a T5 set if I wanted to use this chip room sale to build a set, and even then, it wouldn't have any 5k chips.

If anyone has a recommendation on how to build a T5 set for either full table/deep stacks or 2 table / no rebuys, I'm all ears! It seems like having no 5K chips would really hurt my wallet and require a large case.

Considering I started looking at dice chips, then CC, then customs, and now Paulsons....I feel like I'm falling in pretty deep here!

Welcome.

FYI, I don't play much either. putting a rack or some shuffle stacks on your desk/around the house, etc. helps justify getting custom CPCs :)

Hello and welcome. You should get a Horseshoe Cincinnati set. I think you’d be disappointed in relabeling a set of Majestics (speaking from experience) authentic Paulson chips hold value well and feel much better than the China clays. Good luck on the hunt.

Thank you!
I have my sights set on Paulsons now for sure. Once you admit you're willing to i don't think you can go back. I'm looking to get a full set for tournament play on black Friday. I just need to figure out what distribution to buy. If I don't hit on black Friday, however, I'll be looking very closely at a Cincinnati set. I've actually spent a good bit of time at that casino.

I guess this is all subject to change... maybe I get ahold of CPC samples before then and fall in love...

Per John's post at the Chiproom there will be tournament chips available at a later date.... these are often sold in single table sets and also go fast, if not in the black Friday sale they may be avail down the road. For a cash set $1, $5, $25, $100 should be very doable if you order right away. Once the sale ad posts you will see prices and needed ratios for each chip count. Folks make count tallies in advance then click on the links at X time when things go live, add to your cart fast and you are done (excel or google sheets work well) typical ratios would be 20-30%min of 1/5, 20%-25, 10-20% 100's, 5%-500, 2%-1000 or snapper/frac....after a set period the ratios drop (often after 1st hour) and then everything sells out quick.
I would recommend for value seeking out a set of primary chips in the breakdown of
200- $1
200-300-$5
80-$25
20-$100

Should be a good $1/$2 set. The 1,5,25 are usually the cheapest with the 100 often a bit more expensive. Buy your cash set now and hope for a turn key tourney set later....a t25 set of casino cash chips gets expensive when going into $500+ value chips

Yeah I did see that little snippet in the thread about the tourney chips. I would love those, but hesitant to pass on a good opportunity to hope to hit one. Are the casino tourney sets typically T25?

Unfortunately, I think I'd have a hard time filling any $1/$2 cash games. I'd need to figure out a 25 cent option for a cash set with my crew. I thought maybe I'd compromise and build a T5 set, which I could expand upon if I decide to mix and match (up or down).

I have 2 tourney sets....one is t25 (25/100/500/1000/5000 Non Cash Value Cincinnati) the other is t1 (1,5,25,100,500,1000 NCV Majestic Star). Both are 36mm instead of the standard 39mm.

As for quarters in a cash set, many options are available. You "could" get real quarters for big $ or luck....but many folks find alternatives or relabel other chips as quarters. I attached one option I have used for my HSI set, the NCV cinci 25's make great quarters, alternatively a relabeled chip can also do well by either removing the former label and applying a new one or placing a thin vinyl label over top of the original....thus any chip from another set that fits in colour wise can be used. As seen in last pick a snapper is relabeled (overlabelled) as a quarter

I think I'd inevitably get more use from a tourney set over cash, but I also love the look of the spot patterns over the solid color chips, and I prefer 39mm. Are most of the casino tourney sets 36mm?

I'm hesitant to get into relabeling but maybe that's the best way to get what I'm after? Ideally I'd like to get a T25 set built with cash chips, but I'd need to relabel to make matching 5k chips. Do people just use mix and match chips? I guess I could just find 5k plaques or something.

If I do start labeling, I'm sure I'll likely go deep down the rabbit hole and pick and choose each individual chip and relabel everything. Is the resale value typically good enough on these paulsons that it's fairly low risk to buy a set and decide on different ones down the road?

Jumer's Casino
There are limits on the Jumer's chips. These percentages are for Jumer's chips only. Multiple orders cannot be used to hit percentages. Any order that does not comply with percentages will be cancelled and refunded...no exceptions.

Plan out what you’d like to get, but if something sells out or full quantities aren’t available you’ll need to adjust numbers on the fly to make sure you stay within the percentages. Good luck!

Resell value can vary, depending on chips. Some will definite appreciate, some will depreciate, but generally you can recoup most of your cost at worst.

Seems like Jack or Horseshoe Cincinnati chips would be an obvious fit and both are (relatively) affordable. I really like my (mostly) Jack Cincinnati set.

Gorgeous set!
I do think I would love to have a Cincinnati set, but I was also hoping to build a set with 5k chips and potentially some larger for tourneys. That's proving to be pretty tough with Paulsons $ chips. I've never handled the 36mm tourney chips, so I'm unsure how I feel about them...

Am I going to be that guy who sets out to buy China clay but ends up with multiple Paulson sets?

... deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole

BTW, what do you typically play with this set? Do you do T1 tourneys, or are your friends sending $500 chips across the table in your cash games??

We play cash games 99% of the time. When we do play a tournament my custom CPC set is used. Paulson sets can be affordable for $1/1 and up cash games. But using cash chips for tournament sets will get very expensive fast.

If you're lucky, you might get what you need for a Paulson set in the upcoming Chip Room Black Friday sale. At least more likely for a cash set anyway (tourney chips I think will be sold later).

Using cash chips as tourney can get quite expensive as $1k chips and up are rarer (and sometimes are 43mm). Custom plaques are an option and might be similar cost, or relabeling some other existing chip (lower denom of the same series or something else entirely).

Cash fracs are almost 100% semi custom relabels for 0.25 and 0.50, and definitely 100% for 0.05 and 0.10 nowadays.

Chip room updated with tourney sets cheap enough that I may be able to have a tourney set AND a cash set...I wish they were better colors and not so heavily used, but the price is right. My main concern is, how many people can I actually get into a tournament with this set? We usually play 6-12 people, but sometimes have larger games. I'm worried I would need more like 1.5 of these to cover a larger game of 14-18 people.... it's not as cost effective if I have to buy two.

That set should be good for 1 table of max 10 players for a 10k value tournament, for 2 tables you will need two of these sets

Is this what PCF does to people? I came here in search of tips on relabeling some majestics...I now have the above tournament set coming to my house, and I've put out an offer on a Paulson cash set...lord help me (...to keep the actual price from my wife)

Yes, this is exactly what PCF does. I'm 3 months in and have 1,200+/- chips......
