Hello all,

I am a new member to the forum which I found while looking for information on chips needed for a craps table. I realize there is lots of information on here about poker games being played at home but I would like to do a home craps game. I am not sure where to start as far as chips are concerned. There will be anywhere from 2-10 people playing (depending on the day). The majority of the time will be spent playing with my children (young adults) and other family.

What denominations should I chose and how many of each do I need? What other considerations should I be thinking about with the chips? I apologize for my first post being a multiple layered question but I don‘t know, what I don’t know. I’m open to advice and comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

Lots and lots and then more 5s. I didn't need as many 1s as I thought. If you will realistically have 10 players I would say 600 $5s minimum. With 400 and 6 players I was regularly having to color them up to keep 5s in the bank during a hot shooter. We usually have $200-500 in starting chips. A 1000 chip set would be a good start for 10 players, maybe like this:

250 x $1
600 x $5
100 x $25
50 x $100

Depending on how your play goes the $100s may never be used. 250 $1s should be plenty. The $5 is the workhorse and you can always use more. $25s are the high roller chips and stretch much further so 100 is probably fine.

Because you need a lot of chips for craps compared to poker, I think the China clay variety are a good option depending on your budget. Figure out your budget and then get samples of chips that fit within it. Of course paulsons are awesome and are highly recommended here, but they are expensive, and you aren't stacking and shuffling like you do playing poker. There are also Bud Jones plastic chips that are great and can be found for good prices (I have a set I use for craps, big easy casino, they're great) as well as ceramics, though I dislike the sound of them being tossed around on the craps table.

My budget for chips at this point is $500-600. The Minister of Finance & Fun is always watching in my household. The bulk of the funds are going towards the table itself. I may Have some wiggle room to adjust with the chips If needed.

.60/chip for 1000 chips would get you into good ceramics, possibly Bud Jones. If you are more likely to have ~6 or fewer players most of the time rather than 10, you could go with ~600 chips and then clay chips like Paulson RHC or BCC might be within budget. Then over time you can add to the set to comfortably handle 10 players. Will take a little more patience to find a set but they are nice. The ceramics are also great even though everyone recommends clay.

There was just a group buy for sunfly ceramic hybrids, there will probably be some catch and release sets going for sale soonish

2-10 players. What min and max are you running on the table? $5 min, $25 min? $100 max or no max?
What starting stacks? $100 or $1000, or anything?
Are you running a cash style game or a tournament? Tournament style you might need $1k or $5k chips.

I could make you a good deal on the same type of chips that @natumes is using for his craps table. Feel free to send me a PM.

Fellow member @natumes recently built a home craps table, and @Racer96 has a lot of experience as a casino dealer, so maybe they've got some particular advice to give about craps denoms and breakdowns.
I'll weigh in here as "also a craps dealer"
The answer is, you're going to need a sh*t load of chips. And also some dealers

Here is a typical craps bank I worked up for @slisk250
Looking down at the table, each item represents a stack of 20 chips. This would be a $100 max bet game.
That is 2,800 chips

This is something I have to give more thought to before deciding on chips. I am thinking of making it a cash set with $.25, $1, and $5 mins and a max bet of $10 or $25. I think that will make things more attractive with the group that will be playing. But I will give it a lot more thought after reading this question.

New to the forums, and thought I'd chime in if people come across this thread searching for more opinions on a craps setup.

I run something very similar to this, but totaling 1500 chips.

$1 - 450 (suggest less here)
$5 - 650
$25 - 250 (suggest more here)
$100 - 100
$500 - 50

I would suggest getting more $25s as opposed to $1s. We run a $10-15 minimum, with buyins from $200-$1000. With my current setup, we rarely need to make change, but we do start getting low if we have some hot rolling. Avg number of players on my table is typically about 5-6. A full table really taxes the bank chips, and we try to pay in larger denoms when we notice much like the casinos do.

I know this is an old post but was curious if you had plans for your craps table build?
