Hi all,

I've been lurking here and reading some of the great content for a few weeks, and thought I'd get on board.

I'm not a serious poker player, but this summer my 17 year old son brought a bunch of his buddies on our summer vacation, and most have never played poker before. Since they are all off to college in a weeks, I had to teach them, and since we got back we've been playing a few nights a week - a low stakes ($5 buy in....these are college kids after all) very informal tournament style of 6-8 players, typically T5000 with 25/50 starting blinds. Most nights are Hold Em but sometimes we do dealer choice.

Anyway, we've been using dice chips, and well, I'm a bit of a collector with an obsessive personality so of course I had to "research" poker chips and I stumbled across PCF.

By the way, over 15 years ago a similar lark led me to stumble on Boardgamegeek.com, and now I own well over 400 board and wargames. (If there are any other board/wargamers that read this, I go by Cleitus the Black on Boardgamegeek.)

So, as to chips. I started small (well cheap) with a recent 1,000 chip order from DiscountPoker - the Monaco Casino seemed the most attractive and well reviewed of the sluggos. I also ordered 10 Jack Casino Paulson's ($5 demon) from the ChipRoom to check them out, and have some samples of various other chips including Milano, Majestic, Nevada Jack, and Nile Club, with a sample of Royals on the way.

We'll see where this goes - a flash in the pan or a full fledged collecting obsession like others I've had: games, as I mentioned, and I've also gone down the road of telescopes/eyepieces and gaming laptops/PCs. Are there any cheap hobbies?

Right now I'm leaning toward "either" Royals and some custom ceramics as my first quality set. Either is in quotes as it could easily become both - and more - based on all the comments I've read here about some of your journeys into "chippers".

I'll close with an observation that the discourse on PCF is remarkably civil, intelligent, and friendly. You've all built a great community here. Thanks!

Welcome Andrew! SoCal has some great members (myself…not great yet). You’ll have fun around here; just try to learn and define your taste as much as possible before a big buy…. Then be prepared to change your mind quickly for another set… and then again, and again, and again…. I am so sorry for your wallet; it will get a good workout.

Welcome to the site! As you’re already doing get samples of everything and see what you like the most. It’ll save you from taking the long road most of us take that generally (though not always) ends up with Paulson clay poker chips of some time.

Welcome Andrew! There's a great Southern California presence here on the forum. If you ever want a "free sample" (or "free smell" as Jimmy John's calls it) , come on up to Orange County to check out all kinds of chip sets. I'm sure you already know there is a pretty good crossover between PCF and Boardgamegeek. Looking forward to see how your personal chipping journey goes, and happy to help in any way I can.

Thanks for the offer!

I wasn't sure about the PCF/BGG but it makes sense given both are related to gaming.

Thanks all! After getting the Jack Paulson's and the Royal's in I decided to go with Royals. Really like the color and the size - any my OCD can't handle used chips...

First 500 on order, went high roller tournament set (sort of) with 100 each of 500, 1000, 5000, 25000, 100000. I know I need more of the 500/1000/5000 than the others, but that OCD again - I like full trays. I'll circle back around for another 100 each of the lower demon's later (and some of the .25-100's.)
