Are you sure? Does apache lie about the chips?

Pretty much any chip can be called "clay" by the seller, because all chips are made out of plastic, and almost all plastics are composites of many different types of materials, including minerals - and minerals are "clay". The mineral content of most low-price chips is quite small, but it's there, so technically it's not a lie.

What people on this forum consider clay chips are those made by Paulson and some other companies, using compression molding instead of injection molding, and made from plastic with a high mineral content (but still mostly plastic). Those are the ones that have been traditionally called clay chips. But since there's no official authority that determines what is and isn't a clay chip, anyone and everyone can and does call their chips "clay", once people learned that "clay" means "like the chips they use in casinos" - even though the low-price chips, including the ones you have, are not very much at all like the ones used in casinos.

Apache is a respected and trusted vendor here on this forum. I can't speculate as to why they felt it appropriate to describe the Monte Carlo chips as clay. But they are in fact injection-molded plastic and contain a metal insert for added weight, which is pretty far from what folks around here consider a clay chip.

But what matters most is what you think about them. If you like the way they look and feel, then they're good chips for you. Finding chips you like at a price you can afford is always something to celebrate!

Oh wow that's really informative thanks. I must say literally everyone in this forum seems incredibly nice and helpful.

Echoing what @CrazyEddie said, if you like them, that's all that matters. There are low cost chips that still avoid many of the pitfalls of cheap injection molded plastic chips... Myself, I was always fond of the first generation Nexgens. They stacked great, and felt softer, with no metal clink, despite having a slug. Their shortcoming was the lack of recess, a feature that was added to the third Nexgen line, on the bee mold, IIRC.

As you learn more about high end chips, you will arrive at a crossroads. You will either realize the inadequacies of your current set (security, most notably) and replace them with better chips (maybe still plastic, maybe clay...maybe ceramic) or you will realize that the upgrade is not worth the price tag and you'll stick with your current set.

Whichever way you choose, all chippers are still welcome here.

Now... Lets discuss hotdog sandwiches...

I can't say I'm a huge fan of PLO. And is PLO a lowest hand wins game? I'm not against learning new games though. I can't necessarily commit for this Friday yet though.

You definitely wouldn't want to come out to my place on a dealers choice night. We play all kinds of fucked up games.

PLO is a 4 or 5 card high only game. Big O is a 5 card Hi/Lo game.

On dealers choice nights we play a lot of split pot games. Its almost exclusively pot limit.

I just realized I never actually took a picture of my set but I have a set of monte Carlo chips from apache poker. Nothing special but they were a big upgrade being my first non plastic set of chips.

I love everything about those Monte Carlo chips. Think I'll circle back when the cash set(s) are complete and but them for Tourney. That's how I ended up here, they didn't have Fracs available  :ROFLMAO:

Welcome to PCF @Jackypoo. You won’t find a better group of people to hang out with than the Michigan crew. I drive all the way from Virginia to splash pots with these guys when I can fit it in my schedule.
Hope to see you up there next time I’m in town. Just the chance to get some of those delicious Dom’s Bakery donuts is worth the drive.
Best wishes on your new chipping adventures.

Sounds like my ideal game and even Thursday night is usually open for me. But just a little far!

Thanks for posting.

Welcome to the forum! That table looks great.

Not sure if harvesting chips is still possible or if 25 cent chips are still in use there, but Detroit has floated many nice chips by this forum. MGM, Greektown & Motor City come to mind. Something to consider if/when the second set bug hits.
