Been perusing this forum for a few days now, this is a great resource.

I am mainly looking to develop a home game set (not super serious, but I love the feel of legitimate chips and the Wal mart sets just don’t cut it anymore). I’ve ordered a few samples (tiki kings, a ceramic sample from Poker Chip Lounge, and another sampler of Monaco Casino Clay 13.5 grams.

I’ve got an idea of what I’m going to like the most, but I want to ask a general question:

I’ve read that “China clays” are very similar to the real casino feel, to the extent that can be duplicated without buying something like Paulsons. I’m expecting the Monaco’s to feel cheaper, and I’m expecting the ceramic chips to feel like some of the casino tourney chips that don’t feel like clay and feel and sound more “breakable” if that makes sense. Am I right about that?

Any advice on starting to get a solid, good feeling and sounding set together would also be appreciated! My budget is initially in the $300-500 range, mostly one 9 person table cash game (and maybe some limited single table tourneys). So I don’t need a crazy range on the high side, but having some purples would probably make a little sense.

Thanks, excited to get into this forum

Ceramics from @BR Pro Poker are a good bet.

I have a ceramic set from them that I might be letting go

Edit: I don’t care for China Clays but that’s what samples are for. They work plenty well for many on the forum

Welcome!

Ceramics and china clays are both good midrange options that feel very different from one another. Samples are your friend here. As far as china clays being as good as Paulsons? Well not really. For the price, they are really nice but once you go real clay…

Yeah I didn’t mean “as nice as” just a good “cheap” option. Thanks for the response though this helps!

Good deal, thanks for the reply!

I don’t want to push a new member outside of their comfort range.

You’ll regularly find the types of chips you mention for sale - huge sets and within your price range.

I no longer own any of these, but I’m guessing any number of members can send you a shuffle stack to see what they’re like.

In other news, for only $200ish more you’ll be in that Paulson range surprisingly.

If that’s not crazily beyond comfort, something like this may be of interest https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/presidents’-day-weekend-sale.51696/

For similar to CC prices you can also obtain fully customized ceramics. Search “card mold” for some good leads there.

Wow what a great link, I’m still discovering so much available here, thank you.

Sounds like I need to just wait a shop here for something. In the meantime, I’m gonna be looking around based on your “card mold” suggestion.

Thanks for the response!

People rag on China Clay's, but my Desert Heat set is MILES better than the dice chips, and the folks who attend my game have absolutely no problem with them. They are heavy, however, so a big set is a bit tedious to move around. But at $0.13 per chip, it's hard to beat the look and feel. At that price a 600 chip set is 78 bucks. Kind of a no- brainer from a budget perspective.

Similar to what everyone else is saying, samples, samples, samples. Try multiple types of ceramics, China clays, cards mold ceramic, Paulson, etc. See how they feel, get an idea of what’s in your price range and how many chips you’ll need.

Personally I just went through the process myself and decided on the Cards Mold ceramic chips. They are available via group buys on the forum or direct from the supplier overseas. Very good quality chip that won’t break the bank. You can submit your own artwork or utilize existing artwork they have. For a budget of $500 you could get around a 1000 chip set.
