New Guy Etiquette in Home Games (3 Viewers)

@SeanGecko was the new guy in our game last night and was the model for how new guys should act. Had a blast playing with him!
Thank you!

It's real easy to be a good guest. Just be cool.

No number 2 at the Animal House ?

For that reason….. I’m out
Like you get an invite to games, listen just because you painted your Yellow Nit card Red, doesn't make you a player

must I defend myself against these baseless claims …. again?

You know that calling me a nit is like calling North Korea a democracy

Some people act like they were literally raised in barns. No manners. If someone doesn't have the decency to pay attention to the game and is on their phone all night and doesn't interact with anyone else, they wouldn't get an invite back from me.

1) Arrive before the start of the game so you can get acquainted with the host, other players, the house and its rules.

2) If you are running late, always text to alert the host and your sponsor.

3) Be friendly. Make conversation. No need to go overboard, but at least engage with the group.

4) Be conscientious, especially in a self-dealt game, about acting on time, shuffling/cutting, pushing chips or cards as needed, etc. Don’t completely tune out what’s going on around you.

5) Don’t hit-and-run when you’re way up, especially in a brand new game.

I agree with 1.

I agree with 2 but it's applicable for everyone.

Partially with 3. Of course, be friendly and it's a home game, not a casino game. But it applies to everyone, not only as newbie. But about engaging a conversation, I'm not convainced. Some are talkative, some are shy. It depends on the personnality of the people.

I agree with 4 but it is applicable for everyone.

For 5, it depends on the definition of hit and run. What is specific for a new player, but also for everyone, is to stay as long as you commited to play (this could be discussed pre-game for instance or during the invite process). If someone lost the max he allowed himself to loose (ex. 2-3 full buy-in), of course, we don't expect him to play the commited time.

Even the toughest home games I’ve played in are pretty social.

Anyway, even if one is fairly reserved, when joining a new social group of any kind, I’d say it’s generally a good idea to make a little effort to get to know people… at least if you want to be included again.

Doesn’t mean you have to be a Chatty Kathy. But immediately putting your head down into your phone after buying in, then making zero effort to engage with the group for several hours, is saying in effect: “IDGAF who any of you are, I just want action.”

In which case, you can just play online, right?

Yes, this I agree. I also agree about coming before to get to know people.
My point was mostly about being the one who engage talks. It's not for everyone.
And newbie or not, I hate seeing people with a headset in a social / home game.
