Hello from NL, Canada. We've been playing Hold'em poker in my garage for the last 17 years. We play two games per night - a short stack ($200 blinds start at 1/2 and a deep stack $25 000 with blinds starting at 25/50). Each game has a bounty and a "free" rebuy OR top up. We play 10 mins blinds and usually finish both games in 3.5 - 4 hours. Also play a cash game 5/5 but thats a separate crowd.

I'm looking for a new set of chips for the regular tuesday game. We have been using the 4 aces chip for awhile and I'd like to change it up. I'm ordering custom bounty chips from Brpropoker so I would like to spice things up. I'm seriously considering the Monte Carlo Poker Club poker chips (1000 and 300 set). I've looked at youtube reviews and they seem to be a decent chip. Looking for something colorful and "european" look. If anyone has any suggestions on where to buy besides straigtpokersupplies and mrcpoker in Canada, or recommend another chip, I'm open to suggestions.

Cheers!

Welcome!
  • # of players (average and max)?
  • budget?
Lots of different chip options available, ranging from 0.32 (fully custom Cards Mold ceramics, long lead time) through various China Clay options from 0.40 to 0.52 (Apache Poker Chips - quick delivery). I'll be the first to say it ... Get Samples

Edit - all prices above in $USD

Hello and welcome!

We'll need some idea of your budget, but I think you'll really need to start with chip breakdown needs.
1000 chip set would need $25 - 200, $100 - 225, $500 - 175, $1000 - 200, $5000 - 100, $10 000 - 100.
300 chip set would need $1 - 75, $5 - 75, $25 - 100, $100 - 50

It would be nice if both sets were the same design, but not necessary.

As always get samples first
Ceramic chips are most economic option

Not the best breakdown for a tourney set. To start with, you don't need 10k chips if you have 5k chips. Better to use 25k chips as the next step.

There are a couple of "standard" starting stacks (which one is better is the subject of much debate):

T10k stacks w/ T25 base (T25/T100/T500/T1k): 8/8/4/7 or 12/12/5/6

For T25k stacks, you would need to add 15k more chips, so you could either add (5x 1k and 2x 5k) or (3x 5k)

If we go with the former (T25/T100/T500/T1k/T5k): 8/8/4/12/2 or 12/12/5/11/2
If we go with the latter (T25/T100/T500/T1k/T5k): 8/8/4/7/3 or 12/12/5/6/3

Multiply by the most number of players you will ever have (leave room for the growth of your game). So if you ever think that you might host a 2 table game with 10 players per table, you would need 160/160/80/240/40 or 160/160/80/140/60 or 240/240/100/220/40 or 240/240/100/120/60.

That is for no rebuys. Use additional 5k chips for rebuys and make change from the players at the table. Most inexpensive chips come in multiples of 25, so round everything up and get a roll or two of 25k, and that should give you enough chips to color up the smaller chips during the tournament.

So in summary for a 20 player tournament (cut this in half if you will ever only do a 10 player max tournament) you will need:

T25: 200 or 250
T100: 200 or 250
T500: 100 or 100
T1k: 150 or 250
T5k: 100 or 100
T25k: 50 or 50

Total chips 800 or 1000

(Caveat 1 - mental math is not my strongest point, so there may be an error or two in the above)
(Caveat 2 - I'm not an expert at this, there are people far more knowledgeable than I. Do some research to verify)

I'm not sure about the T1 base stacks, but do a search in the forums, I'm sure it is in there somewhere. Also do a general search for "Tournament starting stacks" and you will see why these numbers are preferred

StraightPokerSupplies, MRCPoker, and GameRoomDepot.ca are the main options in Canada that I'm aware of, although I haven't purchased from GameRoomDepot.

If you like the custom ceramics you get from BRProPoker, consider their semi-custom and custom options. Depends on if you like ceramics or not. Note that any prices you see on the forum are generally in USD, and shipping to Canada can be cost-prohibitive. You didn't mention a budget. Be warned...some of the chips you'll see recommended are not cheap, especially once you take the exchange rate into account.

With respect to breakdown, you don't indicate the number of players you have, but that's a factor. A number of us have spreadsheets to calculate breakdowns...if you want mine, just let me know.

For both tournament and cash, you are going to hear recommendations to have separate sets, or have different denoms for tournament and cash. That eliminates the possibility of a chip migrating from the tournament game to the cash game, and makes sense.

Welcome to PCF,

Seem like the OP are looking for chip like the Bud Jones S7 or Matsui that had the Denom at the 4 side
