Welcome to the Asylum! It's a fun and addictive hobby. You may hear some people say skip the cheaper sets and just get one or two really nice sets of chips. I heard that advice when I was new, thought I was going to contain myself to a really small budget, and I disregarded it. BIG MISTAKE! I now have NINE playable sets, a couple that are in the assembly stage still, and hundreds of samples plus racks of other "interesting" chips that are not yet part of a set. But all of them looked at individually were relatively inexpensive. For the combined money I've spent I could have bought two KILLER sets. Oh well, live and learn.

Also, be sure before your husband builds that table, you look for some of the table build threads on here. Even if he knows how to build stuff, he can learn a lot from those here who have built tables, and made some mistakes while doing so. He'll pick up a ton of valuable tips and tricks.
Excellent advice!! I’m heading over to the table build threads now. Much appreciated.

The big ones you mean?

Oiling the whole set right now, a few need to be flattened but it has always been my dream to own a larger set of Paulsons. We will have to make custom plaques to really make it playable which will cost a couple thousand dollars... probably going to be a while but would love to have this one built in 2022.

Our buddy @seeking down in Fredricksburg VA has an oversized set and it is absolutely a blast to play and soo different from the normal 39mm chips we are all used to! Ours are all 48mm but his are spotted and go up to 50mm monsters!

Definitely no where near as cool, but not many options when it comes to oversized chips so we are pretty excited about the Jack's!

Can't wait to see what you guys wind up with for your first sets!

I was just talking about Jack chips in general. Wow, SO many options!!! Very very excited. I’ve never played with larger chips before. Might need to get some samples!!

Larger chips like these are tough to find. I think the Chip Room may still have the 25s but the others sold out really fast.

@Apache sells a China clay version of 43mm chips (same size as $1k chips at most casinos) they are called Royals and actually very affordable and in my opinion the nicest of all China Clay's.

The Jack's Detroit chips are very nice as the Casino rebrand and never actually played the chips. They are loved by many chippers here and tough to find a playable set at this point. The Jack's Cincinnati are still around but they were used in the casino, to me they are lighter weight and not as nice but still Paulsons.

Sounds like you guys are cash players as opposed to tourney, but that is just an assumption. They both had tournament sets of chips as well.

Definitely lots of options in the Chipping hobby, sounds like you are already finding something you like!

I agree, the Jack Detroits are nicer. But my wallet doesn’t like the price of them just yet. The Cincys are more reasonable.
