The controversy the discovery these Mapes chips has sparked is a tad in nerving. I’ve received messages from cool find, are you selling, thank you for selling, how dare you not sell, what did you sell for? Who did you sell to? Don’t sell to him, I’ll buy a chip for 200 today but now that I know what you have I’ll go without for more than 50. Wow. Amazing.

if you discover a hoard or large lot of personal property you’re free to scream from the roof tops. Or not. I’ve learned from a newbies point of view that I will prefer to keep finds to myself until a plan is fully considered for they’re addition to a collection of a sell off.

Nosy parkers and vultures, huh? Isn’t that lovely. It was a very nice score though, Dan!

Undiscovered hordes have a huge effect on collectible chip prices so you must expect some chaos to come about whenever a horde is discovered. It can and will have a massive effect on the chip singles market. Those that have made investments based on known quantities will take a hit (believe me I've had it happen to me) based on new quantity information. Not your fault that said chips have been discovered but it is irresponsible to not announce or let such discoveries be known.

All the other BS about who you should/should not sell to or whether you sell or not sell (and for what prices) is just that, BS, ignore that shite.

I have been through this more than once and I think to really understand why what happens, you really need to try and see it from both sides.

Consider if you had a collection of chips where you have 1-a few of each of many different chips that were all considered very collectable. Let's say that a few of those chips sell back and forth for years at around $100 ea and there is thought to be a known number of each - obviously a relatively low number because of the fairly high value of sales.

One day someone dies and since their heirs have no idea that the attic full of crates of chips have any value & they want to get rid of all the crap in the house so they can sell. They have a garage sale and off go a hundred thousand chips for 10k

Now back to those chips that you have and think are worth $100 ea. For the past 50 yrs or so the conventional wisdom is that there are just a few hundred if those chips in existance. One day someone starts putting racks of those chips on e-bay for $79 and then $59 and pretty soon $29 and not long after there are dozens of ads for the chips that you bought for $100 that aren't selling for even $20.

How would most people feel about this?

I can tell you most people are going to be upset and this is pretty much what happens.

I can't see blaming the seller. He just did what anyone would do in the same situation. He found a great deal and took advantage just like anyone.....

I don't care about any of this stuff really, but why make a thread about the drama of PCF and then make a thread addressing the drama of the other drama thread commenting on the drama on here on PCF? It is kind of like drama-ception. Just curious.

Congrats on the find!

What one quickly figures out is that obsolete casino chips are a bad investment vehicle, or, at least a fast in and out before a hoard is discovered (which is almost a guarantee will happen). As I see it if you like something, buy it. If you don't like the price of it, go without. Easy choice. Gotta run..... chipsdealer is calling with an investment strategy!
