hello so i have been looking up alot of videos about how to become a better poker player and almost all reference doing studying on charts. i dont know what charts they are talking about/ i don't understand how to study theses charts. what are people talking about and what way can i improving studying charts.

They are talking about starting hand range charts. Assuming it folds to you, they tell you which hands to raise from each position.

Start off slow, if you start trying to study gto, implied odds, reverse implied odds, variance, VPIP, equity, balancing ranges etc etc etc you will more than likely be very confused and frustrated. Charts assume you know a lot of that type of stuff already, or else they will look like gibberish. Assuming you are gonna be playing low stakes hold em/home games, i reccomend Ed millers book: Getting started in hold em, it will give you the foundation you need. You can study all the charts and watch every poker video on youtube, but a starting player simply needs experience more than anything.

thanks that's probably some of the best advice i have been given. and yeah i'm only playing low limits and home games.

Also if there is some low stakes limit hold em in your local casino, you can get more play out of a much smaller bankroll, as your entire stack isnt at risk in every hand you play. Limit isnt sexy like you might see the emotionless robots playing on tv, but it will give you experience and within a month or 2 you could be dominating the grannies that play 2/4 limit lol.

You can look up starting hands and basic play strategy. Pretty much all of them are telling you the same thing. Learn those basics and play them, and youll be ahead of most players. Beyond that, to start to advance you need to read a lot of theory and you you need to play a lot of hands. Because the advise for EVERY situation will be raise, fold, sometimes call. You have to learn to read the players and table and board and your own persona to decide what to do in every hand.

The best advise to give to a new poker player.......

Raise more. Fold more. Call less often.
Totally agree, this is excellent and simple advice.
I remember enjoying reading the Harrington on Holdem books and found them very helpful as they had practice exercises to make sure you understood concepts like pot odds, etc.

I agree - read more. Try to find a balance of reading, and then playing to practice/implement what you have read.

as opposed to thinking how to be a better player, it also may help to focus on how to be less of a bad player. This is based on the assumption that a successful poker player isn’t the one making soul reads, but the one who makes the least big mistakes.

write down and save hands you think you have played wrong, or poorly. And then focus on improving your weaknesses. Often the reason you have been put in a very hard spot is due to the fact that you shouldn’t have been in that spot in the first place (Ie. Prob should have folded the hand PF, or raised the hand earlier to determine where you stood in the pot).

The goal is to have fun

statistically gambling is by far a losing venture.... I would advise play in house/home games or the local casino/card room for low/moderate stakes. I personally enjoy the loud boisterous home game or card room with similar atmosphere. Currently my best option for relatively free poker that is zero actual cost to play is Virtual poker on one of the VR systems. Its a free app with the typical starter coins and daily reloads with options to buy more if you want to be reckless or other stuff i never bothered looking at. the game is pretty fun and on average the play is pretty decent with a good vibe. I have played it on Oculus Quest and Rift S....I'd recommend a Quest only because its mobile but the rift has more game options

I think for most people, the goal is to make money. And I promise you, you can develop a decent enough game to win money at live $1/2 stakes, or live $90 tournaments without ever looking at a chart. 100%

And it’s worth mentioning that the all-time winningest World Series of poker player, Phil Helmuth, doesn’t look at charts or solvers, and he’s still winning. Not that he’s a guy who anybody should be imitating. But the point is that none of these charts or solvers existed ten years ago. They will certainly give you a better understanding of the game, and are probably necessary to succeed at the higher levels of live poker. But you can do just fine at home games and live low stakes playing like people did 10-15 years ago.

IF, HOWEVER, YOURE PLAYING ONLINE, HERE’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GET:

Opening Hand charts are (IMO) about one thing - learning to fold marginal hands. And what makes a marginal hand can vary, depending on position and the action already happened or yet to come. So many charts will have different values depending on whether you are EP (early position), MP (mid position) or LP (late position).

Position is one of the things that beginners often overlook, but it can be one of the most important things to learn as a new player (again IMO).

I might be a nerd for recommending this, but watch "Rounders" a few times if you've never seen it. The flick is arguably the greatest poker movie ever produced. Some of the very basic advice throughout the script, especially in the opening scene, still holds true 20-plus years after the movie hit theaters.

After that, absorb what others have said in this thread.
