I am doing a custom relabel for my Wed night game. I have the following chips so far:

100x Roulette solid for my .50 frac
100x Lucky Derby $3 for my $1 (looking for 1-2 more racks)
200x Pine Shed $5 for my $5 chip
200x Aztar $25 for my $25 chip
40x Empress $100 for my $100 chip

My question is I have the option of getting 200 El Dorado $3 (grey w/ mint spots). Should I get those to replace the Lucky Derby $3? I can't decide!! Help!! Here are some pictures. Sorry @bentax1978 in advance for using your Eldorado Picture. And chips are a little parched after cleaning...I was going to oil them after the labels go on so colors should be a little brighter than pictures. Thanks for any constructive comments.

My vote is yes. Those Eldorado chips are sweet. Are you going to mill them out or label over the stamps?

PS- If you have any extra I would love to buy one of the Pine Shed chips for my collection.

No worries (y)

That's a tough one IMO. I really like the Derby $3 chips, and I think the colors go well with the rest of the chips. Not that the Eldorados would be a bad choice, but I think my preference leans towards the LD chips based mostly on the color. I really like the spot progression you have going (with either option).

I like the Eldorado slightly better for the $1 and it works a little better for spot progression, but there is nothing wrong with the Lucky Derby either.

Personally, I wouldn't, for multiple reasons...

- The primary reason is condition-matching. The El Dorados look to be the nicest of the chips by far, with the exception of the yellows which seem to be in good shape. When I try to match up mixed sets I generally try to keep the condition the relative same - either all pretty new, or all pretty used. Might just be a personal preference of mine, but I think it at least bears considering.
- Color. I think the blue provides a nice mix with the yellows and reds vs. the grey/pale El Dorado chips.
- If I'm looking to put together a used, mixed set for relabeling, I don't think I'd be interested in paying a hefty premium for nicer chips only to have to pay more money to have them milled. I can understand shelling out dollars for something that's a perfect fit, but if you're on the fence about it, then I think it's inherently not a *perfect* fit. Why spend money just to spend more money when you don't need to?

I really think those El Dorado chips are very nice, and I almost pulled the trigger on them myself. I'm not sure they really fit better than what I have for my set, though, and I'm not sure they fit better than what you already have in those LD chips.

I will be re-labeling only...I have a thing against milling out old casino chips esp. if they are in nice condition.

I considered condition so I have the option of getting 2 racks of excellent-casino used El Dorados for this mixed set or getting 2 racks of minty Eldorados not for this set. Just getting them because they are minty Paulson casino chips. :p

I think once everything is labeled and oiled, the gray Eldorado's will fit in very nicely, and provide a very unique look for the set. And presumably those will be your workhorse chips, so condition will probably match up with the others pretty quickly.

So far 5 votes for El Dorado and 2 for Lucky Derby. Any other comments or votes before I pull the trigger...

If I were building a set, I'd have to go with white as my $1, blue as my $2.

blue as my $2.

Not a smart-ass question, just curious, what would you use the $2 chips for? Aside from a separate limit set with a 8+ racks of $2 chips, I personally find a $2 chip to be more of a nuisance to use in a set with $1 and $5 chips. I'm a more chip, but less denoms kind of guy :)

I agree.

I was just saying, the white makes more sense to me as a $1. IF you were going to use the blue derby chips, then I'd use them as $2.

I think a $2 would only make sense to me in a $1/$2 limit game - but I too would prefer less denoms.

@kmccormick100 @Vinyard @genopark , any comments since you guys will be the ones playing with them?
I thought the blues went great with the set color wise, but they're definitely the most worn of the chips. The gray el dorado's do technically work better with the spot progression, and I'll be happy to break them all in shuffling big stacks for hours haha.

I favor the Derbys over the El Dorados, because I think the blues and golds mixed in a pot will look much greater than Yellow and grey. Same for bigger pots, Blue + Red > Grey + Red.

As you don't intend to mill the hotstamp, it becomes a lock. Lucky Derby.

I would note that the Eldorado $3 chips, if anything like the two racks in nice condition that I just sold, have very sharp (edged) hotstamps. I believe it would be problematic to put a label directly on top of the stamp without scrapping it or milling it. Using any label thin enough to fit the recess would likely show the texture of the hotstamps underneath. This may be a moot point if you pickup more Eldorados where the chips and hotstamps are already worn down smooth.

Oh, and congratulations on breaking the 60k chip barrier  :whistling:

I like the look of the Lucky Derby chips more than the El Dorado. Just not a fan of that color combo.
