(My first post here, sorry for the length.)

Or, my journey really began almost 25 years ago. That’s when I started up my first home game in Stockholm, Sweden. Since then, we have been playing on a more or less regular basis. I even ran it as a semi-professional club for a few years. My tables has seen well over a hundred players over the years, but now I host a monthly game for around 8-12 players. And the majority of those are actually from the core group that began playing back in 1998, so we have a long history. Next year, I am planning a big 25-year anniversary event. And with that, I hope to introduce a brand new custom chip set.

For the last few years, we have been using Nevada Jacks as our main set, but this time I am set on clay chips. China clays though, as my budget likely will not allow for more expensive chips. I think I will go for Royals, but I am still waiting for samples. My other option is Majestics, but I like the overall design of the Royals better.

My idea is to get one large set, that will work for both cash games and tournaments. Another alternative is to get Majestics for cash games and use Royals for tournaments.

Our game nights usually start with a T25 tournament with 8-12 players, and ends in a cash game for eliminated players (blinds 2-5 or 5-10), usually not more than 10 players. But I want to get enough chips to host 2 tournament tables. And even though we normally start our tournaments with 10,000 chips, I also want to be able to run big stack tourneys (100K+) for about 12 players.

I don’t know if this is feasible with around 1,000 chips, but this is my idea of chip breakdown:

100 x 1
140 x 5
160 x 25
160 x 100
80 x 500
160 x 1.000
125 x 5.000
50 x 25.000
25 x 100.000

I would greatly appreciate any feedback on this. Since I live in Sweden shipping costs will be huge, so I need to get this right the first time.
After I have decided on the breakdown and whether to get 1 or 2 sets, I will begin the design process. And get a new loan on the house, I guess…

Anyway, thanks for your time and expertise!

Welcome! Your game sounds like it deserves proper clay chips. What is your absolute maximum budget for the new set(s)?

Thanks! I am still debating the budget with myself, tough negotiations… but I am thinking in the range $500-1000. Preferably including shipping and such, but I really haven’t set a definitive max yet.

Welcome fellow Swede (and Stockholmare)!

Everyone here will tell you to get seperate sets for cash and tourney. Royals are really good for the price, I used to own a set. Only thing to be weary of is the smell. Since you’re getting samples, you’ll get to experience first hand if it’s tolerable or not (didn’t bother me that much). Are you thinking of getting blanks and designing your own labels?

Your proposed breakdown looks short on 5s and 25s for 2/5 and 5/10.

Feel free to shoot me a pm if I can help out in any way.

Hello Sweden! Nice to see that all Swedes are not using dice chips…

I know the recommendation is to get separate cash and tourney sets, and that is probably 100 % correct. I was just thinking that I could decrease the total number of chips. But I might end up with 2 sets in the end.

Thanks for the feedback on 5s and 25s.

I will send you a pm later, maybe you can give me some tips on ordering from Sweden.

Thanks! And yes, my plan is to get blanks and design my own labels. If it is within economic reach, I might have to settle for standard chips.

If you’d play 5/5 instead of 2/5 and forget about high denom tourneys, a 1000 chip breakdown like below should work nicely.

200x 5
200x 25
200x 100
80x 500
160x 1k
160x 5k

I got a suggestion, with a budget of $500 to $1000.

Instead of getting a big set that serve for both tourney and cash game.

You could consider keeping the existing set you had for Cash and get a New Tourney set of 400 for T25 with Stock Clay Chip like

Rounder http://www.classicpokerchips.com/stock/roundersc.htm

Key West https://www.keywestresortcasino.com/key-west-casino-chips.html

These are stock chips so any add on in future is also possible

Thanks for the advice, I will consider these options also. There’s a lot to think about, I realize. I did read about this being a rabbit hole, guess I am standing on the edge, staring down right now…

@LeLe Where did you get that image of the breakdown? Is it some sort of online tool?

Good suggestion! But you will need more 1ks. I would propose:

T25 x 120
T100 x 120
T500 x 50
T1000 x 90
T5000 x 20

This allows for 12/12/5/6 10k starting stacks with spare 1ks and 5ks for color ups and rebuys.

Since OP wants to be able to cover two tables I would say at least (might be able to get by with less 1ks):

T25 x 160
T100 x 160
T500 x 80
T1000 x 200
T5000 x 40

This way you can do the same starting stacks for up to 13 players but can cover two full tables by adjusting to 8/8/4/7

Thanks again. This last breakdown might be just right for me. Then I can add higher denoms later, and go for a separate cash set. And give up on the idea of One chipset to rule them all…

great post, Erik. I second this.

You can get away with using higher denoms for color-ups as @Eriks proposes when you have a relatively good amount of the lower denoms in play. I do see an issue with having only the bare minimum (8x 25, 8x 100, etc.) though, and in that case would prefer to color-up using the next denom. However if your game is mostly 12max and almost never full two tables, you might weigh the cost of the additional chips against having to make change uncomfortably often in those rare games.
