Hello all!

Long story short, I just got a new fully remote job and am considering moving to a new state because, I am just in need of somewhere new and NYC is too expensive. This being said, I am also still planning on going back to school for a second degree in Mechanical engineering next fall, so ideally I would love to be somewhere where I can go to school in that state and (if I'm lucky) eventually pay in state tuition.

All this being said, would love any advice whether its moving to a new area or suggestions in terms of location and schools etc.

Additionally! If you have or know anyone who has a place to rent, whether it's room or basement or attic or apartment let me know :D Can provide proof of income or whatever else is needed to show that I am not crazy or homeless haha.

I am from NYC so I tend to gravitate to larger population areas, but I'm pretty open in this move. Some locations that came to mind were: Seattle (@Saoliver @Gorbash :p), Atlanta, both Carolinas, Florida, TX, Phoenix AZ. Just some to name a few.

Thanks everyone as always :D

Vic

Purdue University has a Mechanical engineering program that ranks high. West Lafayette, Indiana, which is a college town.

You can get a Purdue degree while using the Indianapolis campus, and reside in Indy (~1.1 million) that has a casino about 45 mins from downtown. Also has charity games on the west and north side, several underground games, and a very affordable cost of living.

I love the weather in Seattle, but I would look to live in Bremerton or that side of the sound. We Hoosiers have a saying 'If you don't like the weather in Indiana, wait 5 minutes, it'll change.' ;)

Also if basketball is your thing, well Indiana should say it all.

Cost of living index

Indy - 90, while New York is 148

North Dakota which is ranked as one of the worst places to live in the country (according to media polls) is a 98; They have an 'eternal flame' that has burned out.

If you do find yourself looking for a place to live here, I'd be able to assist in making sure you don't pick a bad neighborhood.

Congrats on the new job and the opportunity to work remote! I’ve already privately made my case for the Seattle area :). But you have plants of great options!
UW is potentially being difficult with the second degree thing is my major roadblock, but I'm trying to figure it out :)

I don't know if Vic can handle Indiana. He saw his first cow and first tumbleweed this Spring in Boise. Hahahahahaha

If you're crazy enough to apply to Rose Hulman, its in Indiana as well; I believe it is THE top rated school for undergrad ME.

You don't see much of any farm life in Indy, but you don't see much of anything but corn, construction, and cows outside of the city (465, the circle interstate around indy)

I’ve never heard of the school, but why would I have to be crazy to apply there just out of curiosity haha.

I’m willing to make the short term exciting big city sacrifice for the long term goal of trying to do something I’m passionate about. I can move back to a city after I finish school if anything :)

Yep this is prob up there in my list of real good options.

But you can’t be at any poker games I’m at you’re too good I heard.
You must have me confused with someone else. I play with the philosophy that 72o has more options to make straights and flushes than pocket pairs and suited connectors. I mean technically it's true, right? :wtf:

@Machine funny enough, North Dakota has the BEST in state tuition laws for someone coming in trying to get a degree there. NOW I KNOW WHY, NO ONE WANTS TO LIVE THERE LOL

You see, the fact that you play with a philosophy already has me behind. And for that reason, I’m out.

As Ruth on Ozarks would say, I don't know shit about fuck, so don't really have any recommendations on relocation

I will say those with an aptitude for engineering tend to become very accomplished poker players, it's likely I would ask you for advice

We've yet to confirm whether or not I have the aptitude or engineering, will update you in about 2 years when I'm fightin for my life.

Burlington, VT. I've spent a week there for the last few years and I love it more every single year.

I'll also put a vote in for Boston and I know a family that is trying to rent their Charlestown apartment.

It out ranks MIT for ME undergrad several years running. The difficulty is very high, its where the kids that get perfect SAT scores go ...

Cost of living is excellent

Job opportunities are everywhere

Rent/Houses aren’t $10,000,000,000

Etc…

If you 're already rich or if you can win your bread over the internet, come to Athens.

Well then that scratches out Athens LOL. I am neither rich nor have I played online poker enough to say that I can earn over the internet. But I can work my day job from Athens!

Hey Vic, I don't have any solid advice for you but I wish I was your age again, so I envy your position. You're a smart kid and will land on your feet no matter what route you decide to take. Keep on truckin'!

Yeah, this is what I meant. Things are cheaper by US standards (except gasoline of course)
Crime rates are still way lower than in most of the US; still shocking by old Greek standards (when no door locks were used, in my life span as a child).
Greeks have degenerated to be awful, but I fear just every nation has turned awful, nowadays.
The weather is ultra-fine; mind earthquakes, though. :)
