Movies you loved and later realized were horrible (1 Viewer)

Back in the '2000s', I replaced my VHS collection with DVDs and the 4 that didn't make the cut:
Deep Star Six
Leviathan
Beverly Hills Cop 3
Navy SEALS

Bad films I still LOVE:
Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man
Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Grand
Tango and Cash

disagree with removing leviathan. great flick. also disagree with including harley davidson. rewatched that about a year ago and hated it. tango and cash is always a classic, though.

In the 1980's this:

really, puggy? no love for bad taste anymore?

i still love that as well as all of peter jackson's first horror films. blood and guts and pig's blood and whatever and they were hilariously gory. i mean just check out these trailers. awesome.

bad taste:

meet the feebles:

dead alive:

Heathers...

I made my wife watch it because I had good memories of it as a teenager. After watching it now, I can't figure out what those good memories were...

I can't help but love "Big Trouble in Little China" It's awful but I watch it every time. Squirrel!

Recapping earlier threads, RotJ sucks, but not as bad as Episodes I, II, III. (Did anyone see the comic-con preview? Whoa!)
Princess Bride is amazing is timeless as is Fletch. Glad they didn't ruin the former with a sequel, like the latter.
Top Gun is eye candy, but not really a great flick. Chasing Amy is terrible, terrible, terrible. Smith should have quit after Mallrats.

Dammit Gnu...those gifs have made it an absolute top priority to watch Dead Alive ASAP!

Lol, that's really all I remember from the movie, except for some freaky baby mutant thing. You're probably better off just going to youtube and typing in "I kick ass for the lord" and just watching that scene :)

Jedi sucked the 1st time around. It was only watchable because it was part of the most awesome series ever (until Lord of the Rings).

If fact most of the garbage people are posting as sucks now, was just as lousy back then (too much to recap since I'm jumping in late).

A few notable points:
  • Rocky Horror as a movie sucked. As an experience, it was awesome. Unless you want to toss toast around your living room with a bunch of strangers, you aren't seeing the same thing.
  • Rocky - You have to forget that it was the start to a zillion boxing movies. It was a character piece. Stallone was excellent, and had the ability to act (as far as acting punchy and not so bright goes). It wasn't about the boxing though. Go into it that way, and I can see how it feels slow.
  • TV shows - Somehow, I find nearly everything on TV Land to be awful. Old TV shows were terrible, but we loved them at the time. So far, the only tv show from the 70s-80s that is watchable is Colombo. Between Colombo and Princess Bride, I am pretty sure Peter Faulk is the key to timeless awesomeness.

Ah, sir, just, ah, one more question. If you've been home alone all this time, why are there two milkshakes on your coffee table?

This may be my new way to slow roll.

Villain bets flop, checks turn, shoves river.
Ok, that was a big raise. Clearly those aces were good for you, and I should get going, Mrs Zombie hates it when I'm late. But one thing keeps bothering me, you know? If you really caught those two aces, then why am I holding two of them as well?

Of course Faulk would be cool about it though, and I would come off as a dickhead.

You are forgetting the dude taking out a house full of people with a lawnmower...too much good stuff to watch just one scene. :)

I always view these threads on Tapatalk which shows me a short version of the latest reply.

Yours showed "You forgot the dude..."

I was prepared to go full beat down mode on you if you were disparaging The Big Lebowski.

Hilarious...The Big Lebowski is definitely safe from this list.

Favorite all time movie. Now where did I put that non-dairy creamer?

Courting Courtney.

I can almost guarantee no one here saw it. My band is on the soundtrack. We get about 20-30 seconds play in the actual move. Obvious reason for me to love it upon release.

I was once channel surfing, and flipped past a channel that seemed like something familiar flew by. Scrolled back, and it was Courting Courtney on the Sundance channel playing my bands song at that moment. Best channel surfing memory ever...

Not sure if I am repeating any, but:

Overboard
Short Circuit
Iron Eagle
About last night
Popeye
1969
Dirty Dancing
Multiplicity
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Gleaming the cube

Long Gone? (though I still want to buy this because it is out of print and I haven't seen it since I was a kid)
Flatliners? Not sure, going to give it another watch today, haven't seen it in years)

Just thought of 3 o'clock high. I don't think it belongs here, but need to see it again.

Loved Shore Circuit and Multiplicity, hoping they hold up. Then again, I still love Howard the Duck, so what do I know?

Psychout

Hands down the best movie to feature the Strawberry Alarmclock and The Seeds. And Jack Nicholson/Dean Stockwell's own band, Mumblin' Jim, is just a bonus.

Jack Nicholson's hairpiece steals so many scenes it gets its own credit.

We used to love this movie but since I stopped smoking I suspect it's lost much of its appeal.

Inception (both good and horrible at the same time, maybe doesn't qualify)
The best of times
From the hip (used to really like this, maybe already mentioned)
Showgirls
Cannibal the musical (not really, but check it out)
Any karate kid that wasn't the original
Mannequin
Swordfish
Cocktail (never saw this, but I am SURE it belongs here for anyone that liked it)
Gremlins (sucks but true....may have already mentioned it)
Wisdom (LOVED this originally, but really is garbo)
The Stand (Gold, poorly executed)
Waterworld (I kinda liked it the first time.......barely)
Breakin'
Breakin' II
Purple Rain
Any Transformers that wasn't the first one

new movies:
Pixels (please.....lol)
Straight outta compton (loves me sum nwa, love the idea; but I think it will be shit)

I still love Cannibal the Musical. For those that haven't seen it, it's the first movie the South Park guys made while they were in college. It's actually based on the true Story of Alferd Packer...first and I think still only person convicted of cannibalism in the U.S. It's also hilarious.

can see pixels sucking from a mile away. Howard the duck, really?!?!?! C'mon gnu, it sucked from the first three minutes. Iron Eagle and Swordfish were both enjoyable at first, and are indeed terrible to watch now. Short Circuit was also awful and yet we loved it at the time. ( I mean, err, you loved it at the, um, time)

I'm gonna hang with bivey on this one, Howard the Duck was awful. Always was, always will. In fact most movies committed to this thread so far have always been terrible.

Sometimes the music pulls us in, and perhaps you're embarrassed to admit you were bopping to Jefferson Starship (Mannequin) back in the day. Sometimes it's something else (38 minutes into Swordfish), but now you realize that the writing was on par with a porno without as much nudity. Then again, maybe you were just young (or gullible) enough to fall victim to the hype-machine which has long-since stopped trying to sell you the movie and now you see it for what it is: Explosions, Van Damme doing the splits, or something that pushed the boundaries of SFX. Eye candy, no nutritional value.

The best thing here isn't the talking duck, or the plot. The best thing is that you could see it and tell your mom it was about the talking duck or the plot.
