I only start this thread because I'm curious if other have to deal with some of the same stuff when inviting other people into your home for a good time. Also, one of my regulars just sent me a text from of a pic of a $10 automatic card shuffler from Target :( The text was a pic of the shuffler and "Just sayin" UGH!!!

Here are some of my favorites/Most hated things people say, request.

#1 - "Do we really have to draw for seats? I want to sit here" Or "is it cool if I just sit next to my wife?" Or "friend"

What is peoples aversion to sitting next to someone they don't know at a poker table? I do this for security reasons and I tell them that, They just don't get it. They ask EVERY game!!

#2 - "dude these cards are too slippery!", "do we have to use these cards?" "I can't shuffle these man. Do you have any other cards?"

I use plastic setups, I have forever. they are nice, they last forever, I can wash them. I also tell them all of these reasons and still, nothing. They still ask EVERY game!!

#3 - The whole Auto shuffler thing. I'm not buying an auto shuffler!!! EVER!!!

Shuffling isn't hard, seriously. Just do it or stop coming over.

#4 - "This table is sooooo big. Are you going to build another smaller table?" "You should get another Smaller table for cash games."

Oh my god! I spent two weeks building this table, I love this table! I get the other table for cash games so people don't have to sit around watching everyone else still in the game play it down, But come on. At the very least have a little respect and appreciate the things people do for the benefit of others to enjoy themselves.

I have a couple more, but they are less abrasive to me so I won't even mention them. Am I just being a baby? Should I not take these things to heart? I go to great lengths to put a game on every month. I clean my home from top to bottom every game day, I spend $50-$60 on drinks and snacks for everyone to share every game, I have spent a lot of time building tables and acquiring chips and nice cards. I get that not everyone will understand these things, but it borders on disrespect in my opinion sometimes to ask some of these things of a guy who does all of this stuff just so you can come to my home and enjoy yourself here. Am I wrong? I don't get after people when they make these comments or requests, but it can change my mood.
I have seriously never got a compliment on my chips or cards. Most love my table, but I spend the money I do on chips and cards because I want people to notice them and appreciate them.

Please shut me down if I'm being way overly touchy about this stuff. I don't think I am. Also if you get it, feel free to vent here:) I need a little backup.

Sincerely,

Sad chip nerd with too much time on his hands :(

The "slippery" cards comment is brought up at any game with a new player who has never used plastic cards. Personally, I don't really find paper cards much better in that respect...a new deck of Bicycles is just as slippery, but I've come to anticipate the comment. We did switch out for brand-new paper cards during one game, then had to switch back mid-game once a few of the cards developed bends in them. They looked like taco shells.

To be honest, the only time a regular brings it up is if they are needling me (well, perhaps to try to tilt me...doesn't work). It's all part of the game. They've come to accept that plastic cards are the norm, since all of our hosts have bought them. Bicycle Prestige, Modiano Texas Hold'em, Copags, and Gemaco are what others use...I use whatever I have that's new. :)

As for " Do you have any other cards?", why yes, I do...

I like this one why don't your chips follow the same color pattern as then casino

The worst thing I hate is when people who aren't in the hand talk about the hand in play especially if its big like a multi all in and someone else is thinking of calling.

Turn2 you need a better set of friends. :)

I guess I am lucky, I haven't experienced any of the thing you have Turn2. My players really appreciate all the work I have put into my poker setup. They are not chip nerds like myself, but they do appreciate clay chips, quality cards and nice poker tables. Years ago we used to travel around to different houses and play with whatever chips, cards and tables they had.

As time went on I purchased better chips, so each host would ask me to bring my chips. I then bought plastic cards, so they would ask me to bring my chips and cards. I then built a custom table, since then all games have been at my house. I reinvest all my winnings into my poker setup. So when I add something new I always thank them for buying it for me and I tell them they paid for everything they see. Adding more chips, seating/bounty chips, light over table, etc.

Everybody seems impressed and nobody else will host any more. They joke that I will be opening my own casino soon. Every time a question comes up, they just refer to me no questions asked. The only thing I have been asked for is an attractive scantily dressed female dealer. Don't think I can get that past the wife.

Nothing that really bothered me at my games but most common comments are about the plastic cards

Ya, hosted a couple ladies nights and invariably I get asked a couple of times if it's ok to put drinks on the table... Um, no! Get your giant chalice of wine off my table. I've had guys (newer to my game) do this.. Although, they never ask, but just put their beverage on the table. Most know better, or take the hint of all the drink carts I have staged around the room.

Refering to my chips: "These chips (clays) are nice. A friend of mine has some really cool ones. With a kind of hologramm sticker on it..."

Yeah . . . most of the questions I get are in the, "what makes these so good" category. I keep a well used deck of bicycles in a drawer as the answer, and a couple friends still have "dice" chips for when they host.

I get a lot of comments like "You take this all very seriously don't you?". I think I have already accepted that all of the other players couldn't really care less if we played with dice chips or not, but I'm happy regardless!

Got a new one from last friday.

"These chips are way better (Aztars). They have the numbers on them. I hated trying to figure out what was what with those other chips we were using (Par-A-Dice Roulettes).

I just said "ya" and didn't bother explaining why the roulettes were great chips and why.

:(

Ya, most annoying is when my play group asks why I bought an expensive chip set (PNY) when we were using dice chips for 4-5 years, lol.

We are not all heathens--we just can't all afford not dice chips. Accepting donations of upgrade, though :D

LoL @ Check-en-ze-deutsch. Heard that one many a times as well.

The request/argument I hear the most that I hate is: "It's my cards, I can show who I want." I have a "show one-show all" policy which people ALWAYS argue against. It drives me absolutely bonkers.

One player. Every time. "Check-en-ze-deutsch!"

I've not heard that one before... Heh heh... That would become a staple with our group!

My guys all appreciate my clay chips/plastic cards and decent (not great) table. When the game is hosted elsewhere, my chips and cards travel.

One of the more eccentric but not poker knowledgeable guys in our poker circle busted out of a tournament Saturday night. Shortly after he was heard offering runners still in the tournament $100 to go all in blind. The quy then asked "Why is that wrong?". He barely got a pass because in our cash game, he is known as a friendly whale type of player personality. This guy will rocket blast away 4k in a 1/2 game.

Also I hate when folks ask how much each chip is worth. UGH...I play with Crystal Parks or PNY's. Default answer is "it's printed on the chip".

Or when they drop a setup of gemacos or modianos on the deck and then complain "these are too slick".

Slippery cards comes up every time we get a new player. I am proud that the cards are still slick, it is the testament to the effort I take to clean the cards after every game (as well as to check for nicks or other damage). I've only heard compliments about the chips, and that is with custom ABS, then ceramics. With China clays on the way, and CPC chips (if the FDL mold gets repaired) paid for, I keep trying to improve my set-up even though I've been told my game is the best tournament game in town.

If anything, my semi-strict adherence to the rules ruffles more feathers than anything, especially with those accustomed to rabbit hunting or showing their hand to select others (also show one, show all).

i play in more illegal raked games than home games, so the nature of the requests is quite a bit different. the host of one of the games a few years ago had attendance fall a bit and tried to entice people by saying he'd order whatever food they wanted (it's standard in raked games here for all food and alcohol be "free"). one guy ordered lobster and the host stuck to his word and we had lobster at the next meal.

funny enough, right? the same guy ordered lobster for another 2 or 3 weeks (games twice a week - tues/thurs) until the host finally put a $20 cap on the per player cost of the meal.

The most annoying thing my guests say is

I CALL

when I've pushed all-in and they have the winning hand.

when they drop a setup of gemacos or modianos on the deck and then complain "these are too slick".

The too slick thing comes up so often, that I have a standard response...

New Player: "these are too slick"

Me: "If you need help shuffling, I can get you a bucket and a stick".

Wow -- some of those are ridiculous. Annoying comments in mine are "your blinds are too long." The blinds are 20 minutes at a 10-player table -- about enough time for one orbit before the blinds go up. And the blind times are advertised in the flyer they received prior to coming. Solution: I'll explain why I do it the way I do it. They usually become fans of the system.

I've also heard the tournament lasts too long. The flyer states it's designed to go from 3:40 to 4:20, and it is almost always done within that time. Solution: Explain that it isn't a luck fest (like they are used to playing in).

If someone asks about values of chips I answer "This month we tried to fool people by making the denomination on the chip the actual value of it."

I sometimes hear they'd like to see re-buys. I'll explain we don't use them because we'd lose some players, and there are plenty of games around that allow re-buys.

Sometimes I have discovered they are commenting more than complaining.

All in all though, my group loves the set up, the cards, and the chips (fairly cheap plastic chips at the moment, but denominated which most people love). I think what they like most is the organization. Honestly, I rarely hear complaints. Some don't like our format, but even that's rare. If they hate it that much, they don't come back. I won't play in a game where I hate the format, and know not everyone likes the same thing.

We mostly have a good group of guys. No complaints really. The only dude I don't care for, I just don't invite to my place.

Same 'ol crap:

  • These cards are WAY to slippery
  • What are the blinds? (they are listed on the 60" TV 8 ft from you moron)
  • There is just some REALLY good poker being played here tonight (says the chip leader)
  • I had xx...lol shoulda played it
  • Quality chips really don't matter.....
