Mold on Chips (1 Viewer)

So I've got allot of cleaning in my future. I figure there's plenty of testing to do to try and minimize the visual appearance.

I figure I'll test with Oxyclean, TSP, simple Green and Dawn. I don't have access to a ultrasonic right now, so will start with just throwing one is each color (orange, yellow, off white) in various heated solutions and then brushing.

I don't expect to 'remove' it, just want to minimize what I can. anyone have any o thoughts?

I only found a couple threads on the topic which I thought might be more common with barn finds, etc.

White vinegar solution for mold removal. Soak thoroughly and dry in sun for optimal mold killing effect, then brush off residual matter. Direct sunlight may have detrimental effects on clay chips, however -- UV damage to pigments and shape deterioration due to heat.

Not sure the camera shows it well, but fairly happy with the early testing. This is a 30 minute soak in vinegar solution, followed by heated dawn bath.

Pre -center is where id be happy. Still slight discoloration, but looks nice

Fortunately I don't care about the stamps, but point taken. These were used for an old casino rental company. Long term storage wasn't ideal obviously.

I'll also test with some other chemicals, but decided to start slow. Must have thrown out my partial OXY and simple Green last move.

I had BCC chips with embedded color bleed from casino-like use that would not come off with **anything** except 0000 steel wool
(but these were white chips and the wool scrub left a grayish tinge on them)
I used this soap and it was miracle (liquid soap with grit)
I thought plenty of times of posting a thread about it and showing results but never did
will post later if anyone doubts

Interesting... Any risk that the grit adds scratches while cleaning?

Still playing around with options. I'm not in the mood to scrub chips.

Latest test one was vinegar bath temperature. At lower temps, no real color change noted. At 105F, some color change which returns with oiling. Not all markings removed, but think any mold is killed.

Tried OxyClean, but too harsh. Haven't tried a weaker solution yet. Didn't feel dawn or simple Green did much. Might do rolling edge with magic eraser.

Slowly working through the process. Any thoughts on duration for cold bath for the orange? I did a 2 hour test room temp bath with a 5-10% vinegar solution.

Off white - Happy in hot vinegar bath for 60 min. Followed by magic eraser on edge.

Yellow I'll probably finish a rack, but the color change after oiling is less than ideal. Not bad, just prefer the original shade.

Orange - Significant negative change with hot...duh. Thought oil might save, but nope. Cold vinegar bath for 2 hours didn't seem to have any negatives, so that'll probably be the next bigger sample with dawn or simple green cleaning ultrasonic.

Blue - haven't messed with yet as only have 360ish with some in bad shape, so obvious test subjects.

Heads-up -- the blues will likely fade far worse than the oranges.

--Seen some interest in Modern Clay (maybe I will sell) So just a bump.
I really like this mold !
